OBS Studio is the best starting point for gamers who want detailed control, broad operating-system support, and free, open-source software. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative if you prefer a guided setup with channel linking, overlays, alerts, and widgets in the desktop workflow. Neither is the universal winner: choose based on your computer, setup preferences, and the scenes and features you need.
Quick comparison: OBS Studio vs Streamlabs Desktop
| What matters | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Gamers who want flexible scene and source control | Gamers who want a guided setup and integrated overlays and widgets |
| Operating systems | Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to the OBS Project | Streamlabs’ May 2026 quick-start guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimum OS guidance; consult its current system-requirements page before installing |
| Scenes and sources | Can combine game or window capture, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards; includes configurable transitions and per-source audio filters | Setup guide covers capturing gameplay, configuring audio, and selecting overlays; webcam and microphone sources are supported |
| Getting started | OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard to find starting settings for your hardware and output | Quick-start guide walks through linking a channel, selecting overlays, capturing gameplay, configuring audio, and going live |
| Price or plan detail established here | Free and open source, per the OBS Project | Streamlabs says streaming through its tools is free; its Twitch guide lists multistream and other capabilities among Ultra upgrades. Check current plan terms for the features you want. |
These are workflow differences, not a performance ranking. The official product materials reviewed do not establish that either application is always faster or produces better quality. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, source count, overlays, and hardware all affect the workload.
Which one should you choose?
Choose OBS Studio for control and broad OS support
OBS is a good candidate if you want to build scenes from different sources and adjust transitions and audio filters yourself. It is also the clearest fit if you use Linux, which OBS lists alongside Windows and macOS. Its flexibility means you will make more of the configuration choices rather than relying on a guided workflow.
Choose Streamlabs Desktop for a guided start
Streamlabs’ quick-start path is designed to lead you from linking a channel and choosing an overlay to capturing gameplay and going live. That can suit a new streamer who wants more of those pieces available in one desktop workflow. Its documentation also covers alerts and widgets; verify current plan terms before relying on a particular feature.

Check plan and destination requirements for multistreaming
Streamlabs’ July 2026 getting-started guide describes multistreaming to integrated destinations and RTMP, subject to platform requirements and stream keys. Check the current plan and eligibility details for your destinations before choosing software on this basis. The reviewed material does not establish comparable multistream features for OBS.
For console streaming, check capture-card compatibility
A capture card can bring console video into a PC scene; OBS lists capture cards as a source type. Before buying one, confirm that the card supports your console, computer ports, operating system, and target resolution. No particular card model is established as best here.

Will your computer handle streaming?
Minimum requirements are a starting point, not a guarantee of smooth gameplay and broadcast output. OBS warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The OBS Project also notes that demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Streamlabs memory guidance: Its system-requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. These are vendor recommendations, not a performance promise for every game and scene.
- Streamlabs example hardware: Its May 20, 2026 quick-start guide gives Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and higher, and Nvidia RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series as recommended classes. Treat these as examples, not a universal buying list.
- Connection guidance: Streamlabs lists 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. This figure is specific to that guidance; other resolutions, frame rates, and services may require different settings.
Streamlabs recommends Ethernet. Actual results still depend on your upload connection and workload, so test your own setup rather than assuming a published minimum will be enough.

Set up a first test stream
- Install the application that fits your needs. Check the current OS and system requirements on the product’s official pages before installation.
- Configure a starting scene. Add gameplay capture, then add only the sources you need, such as a microphone, optional webcam, images, or alerts. If you are capturing a console, configure a compatible capture card.
- Use the built-in setup workflow. In OBS, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard to get suggested settings based on your hardware and chosen output. In Streamlabs, follow the quick-start workflow to link your channel, select overlays, capture gameplay, and configure audio.
- Choose frame rate for the game and setup. Streamlabs’ May 2026 guide suggests 60 FPS for fast action and 30 FPS for slower card games as starting points, not universal rules. Use a lower target if your computer or connection cannot sustain the higher one.
- Make a short recording or test broadcast. Check that gameplay appears, voice levels are clear, audio and video stay in sync, and frames are delivered smoothly. Adjust settings and remove unnecessary sources or overlays if performance is poor.
- Go live only after checking the destination’s current rules. Confirm the correct channel and stream key in the application, and review the streaming service’s requirements for your content and account.
Optional equipment: microphone, webcam, or capture card
- Microphone: Useful for live commentary; both workflows document microphone audio sources. Check that the selected input is the one your scene is actually using.
- Webcam: Optional for a face-camera scene. Add it as a video source and frame it so it does not hide important game information.
- Capture card: Useful when console video needs to enter the computer’s streaming scene. Check compatibility across the console, card, ports, operating system, and intended resolution before purchasing.
These are optional production choices, not requirements for every gaming stream. No particular make or model has been tested or endorsed here.
