OBS Studio is a practical starting point for streaming 1440p or 4K to YouTube because its official controls cover canvas and output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scenes, and stream-key setup. The best settings still depend on your encoder, computer, and upload connection: selecting 4K in software alone does not ensure a stable, clear stream.

What to look for in high-resolution streaming software

For a 1440p or 2160p (4K) YouTube stream, assess the whole path from source to YouTube—not just the app name. The software must expose suitable output controls, your encoder must support the chosen codec and workload, and your upload connection must sustain the bitrate. YouTube’s recommended settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

  • YouTube ingest: RTMP or RTMPS, a supported codec, an appropriate frame rate and keyframe interval, and a bitrate suited to the output.
  • Output controls: the ability to choose the stream’s resolution and frame rate independently of the workspace used to arrange sources.
  • Encoding route: software encoding on the CPU or a supported hardware encoder, taking the encoder generation and system load into account.
  • Reliability: enough upload capacity for the stream, followed by a representative preflight and live health monitoring.
  • Inputs: a capture card only if your setup needs to bring in an external camera, console, or other video source.

The available official documentation supports OBS Studio as a well-documented option, but it does not establish a definitive ranking across all streaming applications.

Why OBS Studio is a practical choice

OBS provides scenes and sources for composing a stream, settings for stream service and key, and controls for audio and video bitrate. Its video settings distinguish the base (canvas) resolution—the workspace where sources are arranged—from the output (scaled) resolution sent to YouTube. That separation is useful when your sources and intended stream dimensions differ.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS supports x264 software encoding as well as available hardware-encoding options. Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a dedicated GPU component and often has low performance impact on modern encoders, but it is not automatically superior: older encoder generations can deliver lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. Choose based on the hardware and codec actually available to you. The OBS Project warns, “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.”

These controls make OBS a practical, documented place to begin—not proof that it is faster, more stable, easier, or better than every alternative. Current like-for-like evidence for other applications is not established here, so compare alternatives against your own required codec, output controls, encoder support, and test results.

YouTube bitrate recommendations for 1440p and 4K

YouTube’s live encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the following recommended bitrates. These are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of visual quality or proof that your connection will carry the stream reliably. YouTube lists minimum bitrates too; aim for a recommended value only if your sustained upload and system can support it.

Output AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) H.264
1440p, 30 fps Minimum 5 Mbps; recommended 15 Mbps Minimum 7 Mbps; recommended 21 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps Minimum 6 Mbps; recommended 24 Mbps Minimum 8 Mbps; recommended 34 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps Minimum 8 Mbps; recommended 30 Mbps Minimum 11 Mbps; recommended 42 Mbps
2160p (4K), 60 fps Minimum 10 Mbps; recommended 35 Mbps Minimum 14 Mbps; recommended 50 Mbps

For example, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for 4K60 over AV1 or H.265 and 50 Mbps for 4K60 over H.264. If your software or encoder cannot use AV1 or H.265 for the intended workflow, use the recommendation for the codec you do use rather than assuming the lower figure applies to H.264.

The same YouTube guide recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. YouTube supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingest up to 60 fps. For HDR, its guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check YouTube’s current guide before going live, since platform recommendations can change.

  1. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, then choose the server and enter or connect the stream key using the options shown. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
  2. Set the workspace and stream output. Open Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution for your source layout, then set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 2560 × 1440 for 1440p or 3840 × 2160 for 4K. Select the intended frame rate, such as 30 or 60 fps. Use a resolution your sources, encoder, and connection can sustain.
  3. Choose an encoder and codec. Open Settings > Output and set the output mode and encoder controls available in your OBS installation. Choose a software or hardware route that supports your target codec and output. Do not assume every GPU supports every codec or that an older hardware encoder matches newer ones at the same bitrate.
  4. Set rate control and bitrate. Configure CBR and use YouTube’s recommendation for your exact resolution, frame rate, and codec from the table above. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and do not exceed four seconds. Configure audio to AAC or MP3 and choose an audio bitrate within the controls available in your setup.
  5. Build and inspect the scene. Add the game, camera, microphone, capture-card feed, overlays, or other sources you actually need. A capture card is one possible source for external video; it is not required for a screen-based stream or every gaming setup.
  6. Run a representative preflight. Test before the real event with audio and motion similar to what you will broadcast. Confirm that the intended resolution and frame rate reach YouTube, that audio is present, and that the computer and network remain stable. A static desktop test does not represent a fast-moving game.

Check the connection and stream health

YouTube advises choosing quality based on your connection, running an upload speed test, and testing with audio and motion similar to the real event. Available upload speed is not the same as guaranteed sustained throughput: other household or office traffic and connection variation can affect a live broadcast. Leave practical headroom rather than treating a speed-test peak as a reliable bitrate budget.

During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents health fields for incoming streams, but a healthy status at one moment is not a promise that a future connection will remain stable. For 2160p streams, YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable; 4K uses normal latency.

Troubleshoot common high-resolution stream problems

  • YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient stream: compare the configured bitrate with the recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check sustained upload capacity and competing network use; reduce output demand if the connection cannot carry it consistently.
  • The stream drops frames or the game becomes sluggish: check system load and encoder behavior. Try a supported hardware encoder to reduce CPU work, or lower frame rate or output resolution. Hardware encoding quality depends on generation, so verify the result rather than assuming the swap improves quality.
  • YouTube receives the wrong resolution: check both OBS base canvas and output scaled resolution, as well as the active YouTube stream configuration. The output resolution is the emitted stream size; changing only the canvas does not necessarily change it.
  • Keyframe or bitrate warnings appear: verify CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and the codec-specific recommended bitrate in YouTube’s current guide.
  • No video source appears: confirm that the scene contains the intended source and that any external capture device is connected and selected. A capture card is only needed when the source workflow calls for one.
  • Stream key fails or the stream will not connect: confirm OBS is configured for YouTube and that the current stream key was copied accurately. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • HDR does not ingest as expected: follow YouTube’s current HDR guidance; it recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and does not support AV1 for HDR.

Copyright and YouTube live rules still apply

Encoder settings do not grant rights to broadcast game footage, music, or other material. Check the rights and license terms for the game, music, overlays, and any third-party content you include, and follow YouTube’s current live-streaming policies. A successful technical test does not establish that content is permitted or eligible for monetization.

Or let it run in the cloud
