A sponsor message is separate: arrange it with the brand, mark the stream as containing paid promotion, and disclose the relationship clearly on air. The two can coexist, but one does not set up the other.
Turn on ads for a YouTube livestream
Check your channel’s eligibility first
In YouTube Studio, open Earn and check which monetization modules are available to your channel. To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from a live stream, the channel must be monetized and must accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Eligibility and available modules depend on the account; do not assume every channel can enable live ads. See YouTube’s monetization options.
Enable monetization in Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- In Live Control Room, select Edit > Monetization.
- Set monetization to On, then choose how to handle mid-roll ads.
When live monetization is on, pre-roll and display ads are enabled automatically. YouTube’s ad system decides whether an individual viewer receives an ad; a selected ad break is an opportunity, not a guarantee. Viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching, while those who do return to the stream when it ends or they skip it. If the stream is embedded on an external site with autoplay enabled, ads are turned off.
Choose how to run mid-roll ads

With automatic mid-rolls, you can delay a break for 10 minutes during an important moment. The on-screen countdown shows when breaks resume. Manually placed breaks still display while the delay is active.

For monetized channels without rights management, YouTube also allows channel-level defaults for future livestreams. The help page says those defaults are not currently available to channels with rights management.
Add a sponsor to your livestream
A sponsorship is a creator-arranged message or endorsement, not an ad slot that YouTube fills. Agree with the sponsor on the message, claims, timing, and any deliverables. The YouTube controls described here do not arrange sponsorships or handle sponsor payment.

- In the stream’s YouTube content settings, identify the video as containing paid promotion, such as a product placement, sponsorship, or endorsement. YouTube’s branded-content policy applies to livestreams; the setting is a platform disclosure aid, and creators remain responsible for disclosure. See YouTube’s Branded Content Policies.
- Tell viewers plainly during the stream. For example: “This segment is sponsored by [Brand].” If a brand provided a free product, an accurate disclosure could be: “Thanks to [Brand] for providing this product for review.” Do not suggest you used or personally endorse something you have not tried.
- Repeat the disclosure periodically so people who join later hear it. Keep it easy to notice and understand; do not rely only on the description or the platform label.
In U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance, a material connection can include payment, free or discounted products, or perks. The FTC advises that a livestream disclosure be repeated periodically because viewers may see only part of the stream: “If making an endorsement in a live stream, the disclosure should be repeated periodically so viewers who only see part of the stream will get the disclosure.” This is staff guidance from the FTC’s 2019 Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers. The FTC’s 2023 Endorsement Guides Q&A also says a disclosure obscured by YouTube ads is not clear and conspicuous, and describes a continuous, clear disclosure throughout the stream as a safe approach. These are U.S. federal guidelines, not universal legal advice; requirements can differ by jurisdiction.
Keep sponsor messages distinct from YouTube ads

You can use both, but consider whether an ad break could interrupt a sponsor segment or obscure its disclosure. YouTube’s paid-promotion setting does not create or negotiate the brand deal.

Optional ad controls and other ways to earn
YouTube documents an Elgato Stream Deck plugin option for inserting ads. A Stream Deck is optional: the main setup and ad controls are available in Studio, so you do not need to buy one to enable or manage livestream ads.
YouTube also lists Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as livestream earning options. They are separate from ad monetization and sponsor arrangements, and availability depends on channel eligibility.
