For a free, flexible desktop setup, start with OBS Studio. YouTube lists OBS as open-source recording and live-streaming software available at no charge. Choose Streamlabs if you want a more integrated set of YouTube widgets and chat-related tools; consider browser studios or production suites when your workflow calls for them. There is no established, hands-on-tested winner for every creator, because “live chat” can mean seeing messages, moderating them, or showing them to viewers—and those are different jobs.
What do you need live chat software to do?
Before choosing an encoder or studio, decide which part of chat you need. A tool’s description of one chat feature does not establish that it handles all three.
- See chat while producing: Keep incoming messages visible to you as you manage the broadcast.
- Moderate chat: Read or manage incoming messages, including moderation actions.
- Show chat on the broadcast: Add a chat box or selected comments as an on-screen element for viewers.
YouTube’s Live Chat API allows external apps to read, send, and moderate live messages in real time, and supports uses such as moderation tools and on-screen comments. That capability is an API foundation; it does not mean every streaming app includes every chat workflow or that each feature is available on every plan.
Which streaming software should you shortlist?
| Option | Best fit | What the available information supports | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Creators who want a free, flexible desktop encoder and are comfortable configuring a production workflow. | YouTube lists OBS as open-source recording and live-streaming software available at no charge. | Do not assume the YouTube listing means a particular chat-reading, moderation, or on-screen chat workflow is built in. Confirm how you will handle each job. |
| Streamlabs | Creators looking for a more integrated set of streaming tools, YouTube widgets, and chat-related integrations. | Streamlabs documents YouTube streaming products and widgets for YouTube events. Its materials also describe a Talk Studio chat box and Cloudbot moderation integration. | Check current operating-system support, plan limits, and which features apply to the specific Streamlabs product you intend to use. A chat box and moderation integration serve different purposes. |
| Restream | Creators considering a browser-based studio or simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms. | YouTube’s tool directory lists Restream as a studio for simultaneous multi-platform streaming. | Verify current chat features and plan terms with the provider. A multistreaming studio is not automatically the right choice if your main need is YouTube chat moderation. |
| StreamYard and other browser studios | Creators who prefer a browser-oriented studio rather than a traditional desktop encoder. | YouTube’s directory includes StreamYard and other studio options. | Directory inclusion does not establish that a given studio offers all three chat jobs, or specify current features and plan limits. Check the exact workflow you need. |
| Wirecast | Creators evaluating a dedicated production application. | YouTube’s tool directory includes Wirecast. | The available information here does not establish a comparable feature matrix, current plan limits, or which chat functions are included. Confirm those details directly before choosing. |
| vMix | Creators considering more complex, multi-camera event or studio production. | Elgato characterizes vMix as aimed at multi-camera events and professional studios. That is a vendor-published description, not a comparative test result. | Match its production capabilities to your actual setup, and verify the chat workflow separately. |
YouTube’s tool directory is a useful shortlist, not an endorsement or complete ranking. The options above are not a synchronized comparison of current prices, performance, or plan-by-plan chat capabilities.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to choose for your workflow
Choose OBS when flexibility and cost matter most
OBS is a sensible starting point if you want a no-charge, open-source desktop encoder and are willing to assemble the chat workflow you need. Decide separately how you will keep chat visible to yourself, moderate it, and display it on stream; the encoder listing alone does not answer those questions.
Choose Streamlabs when integrated tools are the priority
Streamlabs is the clearest alternative if YouTube widgets and chat-related integrations are central to your setup. Check the documentation for the specific product: a Talk Studio chat box is about displaying chat, while Cloudbot is a moderation integration. Confirm the current availability and limits of each feature rather than assuming that one product or plan includes everything.

Consider a browser studio for browser-based production or multistreaming
If you want a browser-oriented studio, compare the current chat workflow of the particular service you are considering. If simultaneous destinations matter, YouTube lists Restream for that use. Verify that the service supports the chat functions you need for YouTube, not just the destinations you want to stream to.
Scale production tools to the event
For a multi-camera event or studio setup, vMix is one option to investigate; Elgato describes it as targeting those productions. That characterization is not proof that it is the best choice for a given production, and it does not settle which chat tools you will need.

Set up YouTube access before the broadcast
- Check your channel’s live-streaming eligibility in YouTube. Software cannot bypass YouTube’s account requirements. Streamlabs notes that requirements vary with account status and verification, so use YouTube’s current account-specific guidance instead of relying on a fixed checklist.
- Choose your chat jobs. Decide whether you need to read chat privately, moderate messages, put chat on screen, or combine those tasks.
- Confirm the exact product and plan. For Streamlabs or a browser studio, check current operating-system support, feature availability, and plan limits for the product you will actually use.
- Configure each chat function separately. Test that you can see messages, perform any moderation tasks you need, and display the intended chat element on stream. Do not treat one working feature as proof that the others are configured.
- Test before a scheduled stream. Verify the workflow on the channel and production setup you intend to use, including whether your selected tool connects successfully after YouTube’s requirements are met.
Accessories are optional
An Elgato Stream Deck is an optional physical control surface. Elgato says it integrates with major streaming applications, but no particular model is established as necessary here. It is not a requirement for streaming or using chat; consider one only if physical controls suit the way you operate your production.

Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card.
