Best all-around pick: the Super Bell. In Super Mario 3D World, Cat Mario can climb walls, pounce, and claw, so the Bell combines combat with access to routes other forms cannot reach. For a different kind of advantage, the Tanooki Suit and Super Leaf excel at movement, the Fire Flower is the clearest ranged combat choice, and the Super Star offers powerful but temporary invincibility.
This is an editorial ranking, not an official Nintendo list. It weighs versatility, combat, movement and exploration, duration or constraints, and how distinctive each ability is. Individual effects vary by game, so a power-up’s place can change with the stage and the meaning of “best.”

Super Bell
Best for exploration and all-around utility. Cat Mario can claw and pounce in combat and climb walls to reach elevated routes. That wall-climbing ability gives the Bell an exploration advantage over power-ups focused on attacks alone. Nintendo lists these Cat Mario abilities on its official Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury page and in the game manual. Its high ranking reflects that mix of movement and offense, rather than a claim that it is strongest in every situation.

Super Leaf and Tanooki Suit
Best for mobility and route control. The Super Leaf gives Mario a tail attack and lets him float or control his descent in the games that use those abilities. In Super Mario Bros. 3, the Tanooki Suit adds the option to transform into a statue temporarily, providing a distinct defensive use. Nintendo’s history of Super Mario Bros. 3 describes the flight, tail attack, and statue ability; the Super Mario All-Stars manual also explains the Tanooki Suit’s abilities. The exact flight and transformation rules depend on the game and form.

Fire Flower
Best straightforward combat power-up. Fire Mario throws fireballs, giving him a ranged attack that can deal with enemies without requiring close contact. In Super Mario 3D World, fireballs can also light torches, adding a small environmental use. These abilities are described on Nintendo’s official game page and in its manual. Its combat focus makes it a reliable pick, though it does not offer the Bell’s wall-climbing or the Leaf’s descent control.

Super Star
Best for a short burst of safety and momentum. The Star grants temporary invincibility in the games described by Nintendo’s Super Mario All-Stars manual and Super Mario Bros. 3 history. That makes it exceptionally powerful when the immediate problem is danger, but the effect is temporary; it is not a sustained exploration or mobility tool.

Super Mushroom
Best foundational upgrade. The Super Mushroom turns Small Mario into Super Mario, increasing his ability to take a hit before losing a life in games that use this growth system. It is broadly useful because it improves survivability without asking the player to master a specialized move. Nintendo describes the size change on its official Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury page. Compared with the more specialized entries here, it provides fewer additional abilities.

Boomerang Flower
Best for a ranged attack with retrieval utility. The boomerang can hit enemies at a distance and retrieve objects in Super Mario 3D World, making it more versatile than a simple projectile. Nintendo documents those uses on its official game page. It ranks below the Fire Flower because its benefits are more situational, but object retrieval gives it a useful niche.

Frog Suit

Best for brief, high-impact destruction. In Super Mario 3D World, the Mega Mushroom makes Mario giant for a short time and lets him smash obstacles, as Nintendo describes on its official game page. Best for multiplying the action. The Double Cherry creates copies of the character, up to five, in Super Mario 3D World, according to Nintendo’s game page. Which Mario power-up is the strongest?
There is no single strongest power-up across every game and situation. If “strongest” means protection from immediate danger, the Super Star is the clearest answer because it grants temporary invincibility. For dependable ranged offense, choose the Fire Flower; for opening routes and reaching elevated areas in Super Mario 3D World, the Super Bell has the edge. If the question is about a broadly helpful upgrade rather than a special move, the Super Mushroom’s extra growth is the classic choice.
