Locations and atmosphere
The investigation moves through sharply different locations, including Baker Street, a Swiss psychiatric hospital and the wetlands of Louisiana. Those settings support a progression from recognizable detective fiction into increasingly destabilizing horror. Steam calls Return of the Obra Dinn a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction. The entire ship is a puzzle: you investigate what happened to its crew and infer identities and causes of death from the evidence you uncover.
Unlike a guided detective game that regularly confirms the next objective, Obra Dinn expects you to form and test hypotheses. The satisfaction comes from making a correct inference, not from merely reaching the next cutscene.

- The ship provides a contained investigation space with many interconnected deaths.
- You must match people to identities and determine how each person died.
- Exploration supplies evidence, but the player must connect it logically.

Obra Dinn sits at the deduction-first end because the player must infer identities and causes of death with minimal hand-holding.
