Grounded is the best first game to try if you want a State of Decay-style survival loop on Xbox Game Pass. It combines scavenging, equipment crafting, dangerous creatures, a base that can be attacked and online co-op for you and up to three friends. It does not reproduce State of Decay 2’s survivor recruitment or community simulation, however. For a different kind of survival, choose The Long Dark for a more solitary wilderness setting or Subnautica 2 for underwater exploration with optional co-op. Grounded 2 also fits the broad survival-and-base-building formula, but its current Game Pass availability must be checked rather than assumed from its 2025 announcement.
What makes a State of Decay alternative a good fit?
State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition combines a zombie apocalypse with a customizable survivor base. Its Xbox listing says the game is included with Game Pass and supports cross-platform multiplayer with up to three friends. That combination creates a particular expectation: you scavenge for supplies, improve a place to live, make equipment, defend the base and decide how to spend limited time and resources.

Grounded is the strongest recommendation when your priority is the practical survival loop rather than the zombie setting. Returning safely matters because the world can threaten the place you have built.
That gives a State of Decay player familiar decision points: Do you make another supply run, improve defensive construction, or prepare better equipment before entering a dangerous area? The pressure comes from hostile wildlife and the risks of exploration instead of an infected human population, but the rhythm of leaving safety, collecting resources and strengthening your position is recognizable.
Co-op and solo play
Grounded supports solo play and online co-op with up to three friends. A four-person group can divide gathering, construction and combat responsibilities, while a solo player can approach the same world at their own pace. Do not buy it expecting State of Decay’s survivor roster or community simulation. The official Grounded description supports threatened bases, crafting and equipment progression; it does not describe recruiting survivors, assigning them to facilities or managing a persistent human settlement. Its miniature-backyard setting also changes the tone completely. Bugs and household objects become the scale-defining threats and landmarks.

Who should choose it
- Choose Grounded if crafting, a defendable home and three-player co-op are your main requirements.
- Choose it if you are happy with a colorful miniature setting instead of a bleak outbreak story.
- Look elsewhere if your favorite State of Decay feature is switching between survivors and balancing a whole community.

2. The Long Dark: choose isolation over community management

The Long Dark belongs on your shortlist when the appeal of State of Decay is the vulnerability of surviving in a hostile world, but you would rather face wilderness than zombies. Xbox’s action-adventure gallery lists the title, making it a candidate for readers searching the console catalog for a different survival setting.
The useful expectation to set is one of tone and premise: this is the solitary-wilderness option in this list, not a claim that it duplicates State of Decay’s base or community systems. The available Xbox evidence does not establish enough current mechanical detail to promise a particular crafting model, multiplayer mode or progression structure here.

Subnautica 2 moves the survival formula to an alien ocean. Xbox Wire describes an underwater survival adventure built around adapting, exploring and building bases, with solo play and optional online co-op for up to three friends. For a State of Decay player, the transferable idea is preparing a place to return to and expanding what you can do by gathering materials; the setting, threats and exploration priorities are entirely different.
Instead of searching abandoned buildings for outbreak supplies, you explore an alien environment and use collected resources to support further expeditions. Base building is therefore part of an exploration loop rather than a representation of a human survivor community.
Game Preview status matters
The Game Preview began on May 14, 2026. Xbox Wire’s announcement names Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC, and specifically identifies Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass for access. A Game Preview is work in progress: features, performance, balance and content can change before completion. Treat the current version as an evolving product, not a finished substitute for State of Decay 2.

An Xbox Wire announcement dated July 15, 2025 described Grounded 2 as an open-world survival game with crafting, base building and solo or friend play, and announced a Game Pass arrival for July 29, 2025. Those elements make it conceptually close to the parts of State of Decay that involve gathering, constructing and cooperating.
Why its current status needs checking
A dated launch announcement is historical evidence, not proof of availability in every plan or country today. Catalog membership can change, and a Game Preview title can receive updates that alter its content or requirements. Search for Grounded 2 in your local catalog and read the current listing before you treat it as an available recommendation.
Who should choose it
Make it your next check if you want a newer open-world survival-and-building formula and are willing to verify the live listing. If the title is absent from your plan, Grounded remains the safer first search because its full release is established, while Subnautica 2 offers a clearly dated preview alternative for players who want an underwater setting.

- Choose Subnautica 2 instead when underwater exploration is more appealing than a familiar land-based survival setting and you accept Game Preview status.
