The best all-round setup is simple: play docked with HDR enabled on a properly calibrated compatible television, leave TV Resolution and RGB Range on Automatic unless your display requires otherwise, and use the game’s performance-oriented preset in handheld mode. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are the strongest 60-fps choices in current Switch 2 testing, including handheld play. Resident Evil 4 remains enjoyable but shows softer portable detail and occasional drops.
VRR is not a universal Resident Evil feature. Nintendo limits Switch 2 VRR to handheld and tabletop modes, and each game must support it. Battery guidance is necessarily conditional: Nintendo says battery life depends on the game and usage conditions, and no authoritative Resident Evil-specific runtime is published.

Recommended Switch 2 settings at a glance
| Priority | Recommended setup | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best docked image | HDR On, calibrated TV Game/HDR mode, TV Resolution Automatic, RGB Range Automatic | Preserves the display’s compatible HDR path without forcing a range that can cause crushed blacks or washed-out shadows. |
| Most consistent portable play | Default performance-oriented preset, moderate brightness, HDR only when it visibly helps | Resident Evil 2 and 3 target 60 fps in handheld testing; lower brightness also reduces power use. |
| Motion smoothing | VRR enabled only if the specific release supports it; use handheld or tabletop mode | Switch 2 VRR does not operate as a blanket console feature in docked mode, and Nintendo says support varies by game. |
| Longest handheld session | Lower screen brightness, moderate volume, unnecessary wireless accessories off | Nintendo provides no Resident Evil runtime figure, so these are optimization steps rather than a guaranteed number of hours. |
Set up Switch 2’s display options first
Resident Evil’s picture quality is shaped by both the game’s own settings and the console output menu. Open System Settings > Display. The menu includes HDR, TV Resolution and RGB Range controls. Nintendo documents output up to 4K and up to 120 fps in compatible games, but 4K output is capped at 60 fps and frame rate differs from game to game. A 4K television therefore cannot turn a title with a lower or variable rendering workload into a guaranteed 120-fps experience.
Docked television setup
- Connect the Switch 2 dock to a compatible HDR television or monitor.
- On the console, open System Settings > Display and set HDR to On when the display supports HDR.
- Set TV Resolution to Automatic. Choose a specific value only when Automatic fails to negotiate correctly; available choices span 720p through 2160p.
- Leave RGB Range on Automatic. A manual Limited or Full choice is useful only when a display handshake produces incorrect black levels or a visibly washed-out image.
- Switch the television to its low-latency Game or HDR Game picture mode, then run the television’s HDR calibration procedure. Disable extra motion interpolation and other cinema processing that adds latency.
- Launch Resident Evil and check its own brightness, HDR paper-white or logo adjustment, and performance options. Follow the game’s calibration image rather than making shadows as bright as possible.
HDR is most convincing when the television is actually calibrated. Turning on the console toggle while leaving a television in a non-HDR picture mode can produce a dull or inaccurately mapped image, especially in dark corridors where Resident Evil relies on shadow detail.

Handheld and tabletop setup
The Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch display. In portable play, start with the game’s default performance-oriented preset unless the release documents a meaningful alternative. Set brightness for the room rather than running the panel at maximum, and judge HDR in the environment where you will play; HDR that looks beneficial under bright light may add little in a dark room while consuming more power.
Tabletop mode uses the same portable-side VRR limitation as handheld mode. If an option is present, enable VRR and test it in motion. Do not assume that a VRR toggle guarantees a fixed frame rate or that it works in every Resident Evil release.
Resident Evil game-by-game settings and results
Resident Evil 2 remake
Resident Evil 2 is the safest choice when a Switch 2 owner wants a high-refresh portable experience. Tom’s Guide reported 60 fps in both docked and handheld testing and recommended enabling HDR. TechRadar likewise described the port as targeting 60 fps in both modes and confirmed HDR support.

Tom’s Guide observed lower texture quality than on PlayStation 5, most noticeably in hair and distant detail, but did not see texture pop-in during its test. That makes the portable preset the sensible default: raising visual quality, if the game exposes such an option, is unlikely to remove the platform’s fundamental texture limits.

- Docked: HDR On after television calibration; Automatic resolution and RGB range.
- Handheld: Performance-oriented/default preset, brightness matched to the room.
- Frame-rate expectation: 60 fps reported in both modes by the cited testing; this is a test result, not a universal promise for every future patch or display.
- VRR: Use only if the game build exposes support and only in handheld or tabletop mode.
Resident Evil 3 remake
Resident Evil 3 shares the strongest performance profile of the three remakes covered in testing. Tom’s Guide reported 60 fps in handheld and said the port ran well. TechRadar found a stable frame rate and strong docked visuals after HDR calibration, while noting a noticeable fidelity reduction in handheld mode.
For a television, spend time on HDR calibration before changing game settings; the docked presentation benefits more from correct tone mapping than from forcing a non-default RGB range. In handheld mode, keep the performance preset and accept that the smaller screen masks some of the fidelity loss while still revealing softer detail in complex scenes.
- Docked: Calibrated HDR Game mode, HDR On, Automatic TV Resolution and RGB Range.
- Handheld/tabletop: Default performance setting; use VRR only when the title explicitly supports it.
- Frame-rate expectation: 60 fps in handheld was reported by Tom’s Guide, with TechRadar describing performance as stable.
Resident Evil 4 remake
Resident Evil 4 is the most technically compromised of the three remakes in the cited Switch 2 testing. Tom’s Guide found the frame rate mostly stable but recorded occasional drops. Handheld play shows softer textures, foliage and Leon’s hair than the docked presentation.
Those trade-offs make mode selection more consequential. Choose docked mode when environmental detail and character materials matter most. In handheld, keep the performance-oriented preset and avoid treating a sharper-looking option as a free upgrade: the title’s portable softness is a platform-level compromise, not something a brightness slider can fix.

The Gold Edition includes Separate Ways, The Mercenaries and additional outfits and extras. That is a content difference, not a performance setting; the same portable image-quality considerations apply.
- Docked: HDR and television calibration where available; Automatic output controls.
- Handheld: Performance/default preset, with expectations set for softer foliage, textures and hair.
- Frame-rate expectation: Mostly stable in testing, with occasional drops reported.
- Best reason to choose Gold Edition: Its included expansions and extras, rather than a claimed frame-rate improvement.
Resident Evil Requiem
Capcom’s official Switch 2 specification page lists 1080p TV output, 900p tabletop/handheld output and HDR. It lists 35.0 GB of required capacity and an approximately 32.0 GB download. These are output specifications: they describe the signal sent to the display, not necessarily the internal rendering resolution, and they do not establish a frame-rate target.
Use the general docked HDR procedure above, or the portable performance preset if the game offers one. Do not infer 60 fps, 120 fps or a particular internal resolution from Capcom’s 1080p and 900p figures.

Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition
Capcom lists 1080p TV output, 900p tabletop/handheld output and HDR support for the Switch 2 version of Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition. As with Requiem, those figures are output resolutions rather than a statement about internal rendering or frame-rate behavior.

For television play, enable HDR only after putting the display in its HDR Game mode and calibrating it. For portable sessions, prioritize a stable-looking default preset and manage brightness for battery life. A supported VRR option, if present in the specific build, remains subject to Nintendo’s handheld/tabletop limitation.
Docked versus handheld: what you actually gain
| Game | Docked image | Handheld image | Performance evidence | HDR/VRR notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 remake | Higher-detail presentation than portable play; HDR recommended in testing. | Lower texture quality than PlayStation 5, especially hair and distant detail; no pop-in observed in the cited test. | 60 fps reported in docked and handheld. | HDR supported; VRR depends on the game and portable mode. |
| Resident Evil 3 remake | Strong visuals after HDR calibration. | Noticeable fidelity reduction. | 60 fps in handheld reported; stable in TechRadar’s assessment. | HDR supported; no blanket VRR guarantee. |
| Resident Evil 4 remake | Preferred for foliage, textures and character detail. | Softer textures, foliage and Leon’s hair. | Mostly stable, with occasional drops in testing. | Use calibrated HDR where available; VRR remains conditional. |
| Resident Evil Requiem | 1080p TV output listed by Capcom. | 900p tabletop/handheld output listed by Capcom. | Not established by the cited output specifications. | HDR listed; VRR behavior not established. |
| Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition | 1080p TV output listed by Capcom. | 900p tabletop/handheld output listed by Capcom. | Not established by the cited output specifications. | HDR listed; VRR behavior not established. |
Output resolution should not be read as internal rendering resolution. A game can render internally at one resolution, reconstruct or upscale, and transmit a different signal. The Capcom figures are therefore useful for choosing a display connection, but insufficient for predicting sharpness or frame rate by themselves.
How to use HDR without losing shadow detail
- Enable HDR on the Switch 2 only with an HDR-capable display.
- Activate the television’s HDR Game mode so latency and tone mapping are appropriate for play.
- Run the television’s HDR calibration, then use Resident Evil’s in-game logo or brightness test.
- Adjust until the darkest symbol is barely visible and bright reference elements retain separation. Do not raise the black level simply to reveal every dark corner; that changes the intended contrast.
- Recheck the result in a dark room and a bright room if you regularly play in both. Perceived shadow detail changes with ambient light.
If HDR looks gray or excessively dim, first verify that the television actually switched into HDR Game mode and that the HDMI input supports the required signal. Only then test a manual RGB Range setting. Automatic is the correct starting point because a mismatched range can clip blacks or whites.

- Do not expect VRR to operate in docked mode merely because the television supports it.
- Do not assume every Resident Evil release exposes VRR support.
- Do not use a VRR toggle as evidence that a title is running at 60 fps.
- If a supported game still looks uneven, check that the console display setting, game option and display input are all configured for VRR.
For Resident Evil 2 and 3, the cited 60-fps handheld results reduce the need for VRR under ideal conditions. For Resident Evil 4, VRR could make occasional variation less distracting if the build and display support it, but it cannot remove the underlying drops.
Battery-life settings for longer portable sessions
Nintendo says, “The battery life will depend on the games you play and usage conditions.” No authoritative source in the cited material gives a Resident Evil-specific runtime, so any precise hour claim would be misleading. Treat the following as power-saving priorities rather than a measured guarantee:
- Lower screen brightness to the minimum that keeps dark-room detail readable.
- Disable HDR when it does not improve the image in the current environment. HDR is a display feature, not a requirement for Resident Evil to run.
- Use moderate speaker or headphone volume.
- Disconnect unnecessary wireless accessories and controllers.
- Prefer the default performance preset over an optional quality mode when the game offers one and battery duration matters more than extra detail.
- Take short pauses in demanding scenes if the console is hot; temperature and usage conditions influence power behavior.
To check charge during play, press ZL + ZR together to show the approximate percentage. For a persistent readout, open System Settings > System > System Battery (%) and enable the percentage display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshooting common picture and performance problems
HDR is washed out, too dark or missing
- Confirm the television input supports HDR and is in HDR Game mode.
- Repeat the television and in-game calibration after the display has switched into HDR.
- Return RGB Range to Automatic before trying a manual range.
- Test another HDMI input or cable if the HDR signal does not engage.
The image is cropped, gray or has crushed blacks
- Set TV Resolution back to Automatic.
- Set RGB Range back to Automatic on both the console path and television if the television offers a corresponding range control.
- Disable television overscan or “zoom” modes.
Frame rate feels uneven
- Check whether the game is in a quality or graphics preset instead of its performance/default preset.
- Remember that Nintendo’s maximum output figures do not guarantee a title’s frame rate.
- For Resident Evil 4, occasional drops were observed in testing; settings cannot guarantee their removal.
- If using VRR, verify that the game supports it and that the console is handheld or tabletop.
Portable detail looks softer than expected
Some softness is an established trade-off rather than a fault. Resident Evil 2 shows lower texture quality than PlayStation 5, Resident Evil 3 has a noticeable handheld fidelity hit, and Resident Evil 4 is softer in textures, foliage and Leon’s hair. Clean the screen, disable any display magnification, and compare the default preset before changing other controls.
A practical setup checklist
Before a docked session
- TV in Game/HDR Game mode.
- Switch 2 HDR enabled when the display is compatible.
- TV Resolution: Automatic unless the display handshake fails.
- RGB Range: Automatic unless black-level testing proves a mismatch.
- Resident Evil brightness/HDR test completed.
Before a handheld session
- Default or performance-oriented preset selected.
- Brightness set for the room, not maximum by habit.
- VRR enabled only when the release and mode support it.
- HDR disabled if it adds no visible benefit and battery time is the priority.
- Wireless accessories and volume kept to what is necessary.
Which setup should you choose?
Choose docked HDR play for the clearest presentation, particularly in Resident Evil 3 and in the detail-heavy areas of Resident Evil 4. Choose handheld performance mode when portability matters: Resident Evil 2 and 3 are the most convincing 60-fps options in the cited tests. Treat Resident Evil 4 as a good portable version with visible softness and occasional drops, not as a parity port. For Requiem and Resident Evil 7, use Capcom’s 1080p TV and 900p portable output figures as connection guidance only, and avoid turning them into unsupported frame-rate claims.
