The best substitute depends on what is actually missing. First check your country’s Nintendo Switch Online catalog: Nintendo describes its classic games as “generally available through their respective Nintendo Classics game libraries as long as you have an active membership, though availability may change over time.” If the game is absent from your regional app, the strongest direct replacements are Star Fox for Switch 2 (a remake of Lylat Wars) and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp for turn-based strategy. The guide below separates subscription access from an owned game, Switch from Switch 2, and a close remake from a merely similar genre.
Start by checking whether the classic is really unavailable
Nintendo’s retro catalog is not a permanent, worldwide list. Availability can change, and Nintendo’s regional pages sometimes show Japanese-only entries or different releases. A game that is absent from one country’s Nintendo Switch Online app may be present in another, while a title you remember from a cartridge may be represented by a different regional version.

Nintendo says its classic games are “generally available through their respective Nintendo Classics game libraries as long as you have an active membership, though availability may change over time.” Treat that as an access rule, not a promise that every historical Nintendo release will be offered. Check the catalog shown in your own Nintendo Account region immediately before deciding that a substitute is necessary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the Switch Online app, not a general search result
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online application on your console.
- Select the system library that originally contained the game: NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy or, on Switch 2, GameCube.
- Search the library’s current game list for the exact title and regional name.
- Read the membership requirement shown for that library. Nintendo uses different requirements across libraries, so an active subscription for one collection does not automatically establish access to another.
- If the title is not listed, check Nintendo’s page for your country. Record the region and the date of your check; “not currently listed in this regional catalog” is more accurate than “Nintendo will never release it.”
Quick picks: the closest legitimate options
| Classic or situation | Closest option | Console requirement | Access model | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Star Fox 64 or Lylat Wars is unavailable | Star Fox for Switch 2 | Switch 2 only | Owned game; a free demo is available | Nintendo describes it as a remake of the Nintendo 64 game Lylat Wars, with updated presentation and new voiced scenes. |
| You want classic map-based, turn-based Nintendo strategy | Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp | Nintendo Switch | Owned Switch title | Two campaign remakes provide the clearest current, purchasable alternative to the Advance Wars style of command play. |
| Super Metroid is missing from your usual list | Check the Super NES Nintendo Classics library first | Switch; membership requirement varies | Subscription access | Nintendo’s Super NES page lists Super Metroid, so the problem may be account region, app, or membership rather than total absence. |
| Star Fox (SNES) or F-ZERO (SNES) is missing | Check the Super NES library | Switch; membership requirement varies | Subscription access | Nintendo’s Super NES page lists both games. |
| GoldenEye 007, F-Zero X or Star Fox 64 is missing | Check the Nintendo 64 library | Switch; membership requirement varies | Subscription access | Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 page lists these titles. |
| EarthBound or a Game Boy Advance F-ZERO entry is missing | Check your regional catalog, including Australia’s listing where applicable | Switch; membership requirement varies | Subscription access | The Australian catalog currently lists EarthBound and Game Boy Advance F-ZERO entries, illustrating why country checks matter. |
The table distinguishes a genuine replacement from a catalog check. Buying a similar game before confirming the original’s availability can leave you paying for a substitute you did not need.

Star Fox 64 or Lylat Wars: choose the Switch 2 remake
For players who want the closest possible answer to an unavailable Star Fox 64 or Lylat Wars, Nintendo’s Star Fox for Switch 2 is the direct recommendation. Nintendo describes it as “a remake of the Nintendo 64 game Lylat Wars,” not merely a space shooter inspired by the series. That relationship makes it a closer match than an unrelated flight or arcade title.
What changes in the remake
- It is a remake of the Nintendo 64 Lylat Wars release.
- Nintendo says the remake has updated presentation.
- It adds new voiced scenes.
- A free demo lets you assess the remake before committing.
The platform qualification is decisive: this version is a Switch 2 exclusive. A standard Nintendo Switch cannot run it. If you own the original Switch, your legitimate first step remains checking whether Star Fox 64 is listed in the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics library for your region and membership level. If you own Switch 2 and want an owned product rather than subscription access, the remake is the cleanest fit.
When the remake is not the right answer
Do not present the Switch 2 game as a universal replacement if the reader has only the original Switch. Platform incompatibility is a hard stop, not a minor caveat. Likewise, someone seeking the exact original presentation may prefer the Nintendo 64 library version when it is available. The remake’s updated presentation and new voiced scenes are changes, so describe it as a close modern alternative rather than an untouched archival copy.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is the strongest owned-game option for readers who miss classic Nintendo strategy and do not want to depend on a rotating subscription catalog. Nintendo’s product description identifies the first campaign as Orange Star fighting Blue Moon and names four countries: Orange Star, Blue Moon, Green Earth and Gold Comet. Those details place the game firmly in the map-based, turn-based command tradition associated with Advance Wars.
Why it is a practical substitute
- It is a Nintendo Switch title, so it does not require Switch 2 hardware.
- It is purchased as a game rather than accessed only while a Nintendo Switch Online membership remains active.
- It includes the first and second Advance Wars campaigns in one product.
- Its turn-by-turn, map-based command structure is a closer match for classic Nintendo strategy than a real-time action game or a general tactics title.
Use the exact product name, including “1+2” and “Re-Boot Camp,” when searching a retailer or Nintendo’s store. Similar-looking listings can refer to a different release or a used cartridge. Confirm the edition and region before buying, especially when importing a physical copy.

Who should choose it
Choose Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp when your priority is issuing commands on a grid, progressing through named campaigns and owning a Switch game outright. It is not a replacement for a space-flight game, an exploration platformer or a licensed first-person shooter. The match is specifically the turn-based strategy loop.
Check the Nintendo Classics libraries before seeking a substitute
Several games commonly described as “missing Nintendo classics” are listed in Nintendo’s own libraries. The apparent absence may come from using the wrong app, looking at a different country’s page or having a membership that does not cover the relevant system.
| Library | Examples listed by Nintendo | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Super NES | Super Metroid, Star Fox, F-ZERO and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past | Your country’s catalog, the Super NES app and the membership tier required for that library. |
| Nintendo 64 | GoldenEye 007, F-Zero X, Star Fox 64 and other N64 games | Whether the listing is available in your region and whether your account has the required access. |
| Game Boy Advance | Game Boy Advance F-ZERO entries are listed in the current Australian catalog | Regional availability; the Australian listing does not establish worldwide availability. |
| Other Nintendo Classics libraries | NES, Game Boy, SEGA Genesis, Virtual Boy and, on Switch 2, GameCube are listed by Nintendo Support | The individual library’s app and membership requirement. Nintendo does not use one universal tier for every system. |
Library presence is not the same as permanent ownership. Nintendo Classics access generally depends on an active membership and can change over time. If you need a game for offline use independent of a subscription, favor an officially sold Switch product such as Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp where it meets your needs.
How to choose when there is no direct first-party replacement
For some requests, no current official source identifies a precise third-party equivalent. In particular, no current official source identifies a precise substitute for EarthBound, F-Zero GX or GoldenEye 007 when the relevant Nintendo listing is absent. Use a decision framework instead of treating any game with a similar label as interchangeable.
1. Match the play loop first
- For rail-based or arena-style space shooting, prioritize the moment-to-moment flight and shooting loop rather than a game that is merely science fiction.
- For turn-based strategy, require discrete turns, map objectives and command decisions; a real-time strategy game is a different experience.
- For an exploration platformer, look for the same emphasis on navigation and ability-gated progress rather than only a side-on camera.
- For a licensed first-person shooter, distinguish campaign structure and local or online modes from a generic action game.
This keeps the recommendation honest. A game can share a genre label while differing in pacing, camera, progression and multiplayer.

2. Confirm the hardware before comparing features
Separate original Switch from Switch 2 at the beginning of the search. The Star Fox remake is Switch 2 exclusive; Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a Nintendo Switch product. A recommendation that ignores this distinction is unusable even if its genre description is accurate.
3. Decide between subscription access and ownership
Nintendo Switch Online is convenient when the exact classic appears in your library, but access is tied to an active membership and the catalog can change. An owned game has a different risk profile: you pay for a particular release and can continue using it without relying on that subscription. Ask which matters more before comparing prices or features.
4. Check the multiplayer requirement
Nintendo’s catalog pages do not list a universal multiplayer feature set for every classic or substitute. Before purchase, inspect the current product page for the exact local or online modes you need. Do not infer multiplayer support merely because the original game had it, or because a replacement belongs to the same genre.

The title is absent in your country
Regional licensing, release history and Nintendo’s changing catalog can produce different results by country. Record your region and check date, then phrase the result as “not currently listed in the checked regional catalog.” That wording reflects the checked regional catalog without claiming permanent removal.
The title is in another Nintendo Classics app
A game may be listed under Super NES, Nintendo 64 or Game Boy Advance rather than the app you opened first. Use the system associated with the original release and confirm the membership requirement shown by Nintendo.

- lay as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, using their unique abilities to explore and uncover new paths and secrets.
- More Friends, More Fun: Play with up to 3 other players in local Co-op and challenge players from around the world in Battle Mode!
You are looking at a different regional release
Regional pages can flag Japanese-only entries. Search the exact regional title and read the availability note. A Japanese-only listing does not prove that the same release is playable through an account registered elsewhere.
Your hardware is incompatible
Switch 2 expands the listed library set to include GameCube and is required for Nintendo’s Star Fox remake. If you have original Switch hardware, filter recommendations accordingly rather than treating a Switch 2 exclusive as a downloadable upgrade.
A repeatable checklist before you buy anything
- Identify the original system. Write down whether the missing game came from NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy or GameCube.
- Check your country’s Nintendo catalog. Use the Nintendo Switch Online app and the regional Nintendo page, not a list made for another market.
- Confirm membership access. Read the requirement for that specific library; tiers vary.
- Check the hardware. Rule out Switch 2-only products if you own an original Switch.
- Choose the access model. Decide whether an active subscription is acceptable or whether you require an owned game.
- Match the play loop. Compare genre, pacing, camera, progression and intended multiplayer rather than relying on a shared franchise-era label.
- Verify the edition and region. For a physical or digital purchase, confirm the exact title, platform and country storefront.
- Use a demo where available. Nintendo offers a free demo for the Switch 2 Star Fox remake, allowing a hardware and presentation check before purchase.
Limits of current availability claims
There is no single authoritative worldwide list of every Nintendo classic that is unavailable on Switch. Nintendo documents changing availability and regional differences, and a catalog entry can change after you read this guide. No named, dated statistical study has published how many Nintendo classics are missing, so claims that a particular percentage or number are unavailable should be treated skeptically.
For EarthBound, F-Zero GX and GoldenEye 007, do not assume a precise third-party equivalent based only on a genre description. First check the relevant Nintendo Classics library; GoldenEye 007 and F-Zero X, for example, are listed on Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 page, while EarthBound appears in the current Australian catalog. If your regional app does not show the game, document that regional result and then select a substitute by play loop and platform rather than presenting an unverified title as “the” replacement.

Bottom line for each common request
- Star Fox 64 or Lylat Wars: check the Nintendo 64 library first; if you want an owned modern version and have Switch 2, choose Nintendo’s Star Fox remake, which includes updated presentation, new voiced scenes and a free demo.
- Classic Nintendo turn-based strategy: choose Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp on Nintendo Switch for an owned product with the Orange Star, Blue Moon, Green Earth and Gold Comet campaigns.
- Super Metroid, Star Fox, F-ZERO or A Link to the Past: check the Super NES Nintendo Classics library before buying anything else.
- GoldenEye 007, F-Zero X or Star Fox 64: check the Nintendo 64 library and your region’s membership requirement.
- Any title not listed: say “not currently listed in this regional catalog,” note the check date, and compare alternatives by play loop, hardware, multiplayer needs and ownership model.
