Where do I get the Sword of Night and Flame?
Find the sword in a chest at Caria Manor in Liurnia. It is a world pickup, not a boss drop. The location guide identifies the chest area as the Caria Manor Grounds and points to the Manor Lower Level Site of Grace as a starting landmark; its available route details are not sufficient to confidently give a turn-by-turn path. Use the in-game manor landmarks to explore from that grace and check the grounds for the chest.

The Intelligence and Faith minimums are the main constraint. This is not a low-investment weapon you can comfortably add to a conventional build without planning for both stats. Its listed base scaling is E in Strength, E in Dexterity, D in Intelligence, and D in Faith. At +10, Eldenpedia reports D/D/B/B scaling in the same order. That supports prioritizing Intelligence and Faith for a dedicated build, but does not establish a universal optimal split or target character level.
What is the best Sword of Night and Flame build?
The practical starting build is a minimum-requirement hybrid: reach 12 Strength, 12 Dexterity, 24 Intelligence, and 24 Faith, then allocate subsequent levels according to survivability, FP use, and which Night-and-Flame Stance follow-up you prefer. The magic follow-up points toward more Intelligence; the fire follow-up points toward more Faith. These are directional choices based on the skill modes, not a tested damage ranking.
Start with survivability and FP
Do not spend every available level on damage just because the sword scales with two offensive stats. Bandai Namco’s 2023 advanced-stats guide recommends at least 40 Vigor for any character, noting 1,450 health at that level; it says 60 Vigor can be worthwhile when other stats meet their needs, corresponding to 1,900 health. The guide lists 2,100 health at 99 Vigor. These are general character-stat figures, not Sword of Night and Flame-specific targets.

Give Mind enough investment for the amount of skill use you want, then adjust it based on your FP sustain in actual play. No fixed Mind target is established for this weapon. Bandai Namco also cautions that “In ELDEN RING, stats do not increase linearly like in other RPGs.” Its general guidance gives Intelligence and Faith weapon-scaling softcaps at 20, 50, and 80; these are broad stat guidance, not proof of a weapon-specific optimum. For this build, cover the requirements, Vigor, and FP needs before pushing either damage stat toward higher softcaps.

- Magic-leaning: Favor Intelligence after meeting both weapon requirements if you prefer the stance’s magic follow-up. Keep Faith at the required level unless you have another reason to raise it.
- Fire-leaning: Favor Faith after meeting both requirements if the fire follow-up is the one you plan to use more. Keep Intelligence at the required level unless other build choices call for more.
- Balanced hybrid: Raise Intelligence and Faith together if you want to retain flexibility between the two modes. This costs more levels across offensive stats, so it competes directly with Vigor and Mind.
Night-and-Flame Stance has two follow-up attack modes. Because the skill has been adjusted in past balance patches, check its current in-game description and behavior rather than relying on launch-era damage claims or outdated spell-name descriptions. The available patch-history reference reports a damage decrease in patch 1.03 and increases in patch 1.07, including increases to both follow-ups; those are community-wiki claims. Bandai Namco’s patch 1.17 notes, dated August 27, 2026, do not name this weapon, so they do not establish a 1.17 change to it.

The Sword of Night and Flame uses Somber Smithing Stones and upgrades to +10. Its unique skill and affinity cannot be changed, so plan around Night-and-Flame Stance rather than expecting to swap the weapon skill or affinity. The cited weapon reference lists its weight as 4.0 and its critical value as 100.

For a dedicated build, upgrade investment supports both the weapon’s damage and its listed scaling progression. Make that commitment after confirming that the hybrid stat requirements suit your character plan; the weapon’s scaling alone does not determine whether it is a better choice than another sword for your play style.
Is the Sword of Night and Flame still worth building around?
It remains a distinct option for a character prepared to support both Intelligence and Faith and make use of its two-mode skill. Its requirements impose a real level and survivability trade-off, while the sources available here do not establish a current head-to-head ranking against other weapons or a tested optimal allocation.
