Which tactical sci-fi FPS is the best fit?
These games offer different versions of tactical play, so the right choice depends on whether you want a campaign, competitive risk, or coordinated co-op.
| Game | Best for | Mode and tactical focus | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marauders | Multiplayer sci-fi extraction | Player-versus-player and player-versus-environment extraction, with persistent gear and XP and upgradeable spacecraft | Industrialized deep-space combat |
| Star Wars Republic Commando | A squad-led FPS campaign | Lead an elite squad on infiltration missions | Military sci-fi adventure |
| GTFO | Deliberate cooperative play | Four-player co-op emphasizing stealth, resource management, and defending positions | Hardcore horror |
Marauders: the closest match for tactical sci-fi extraction
Publisher Team17 describes Marauders as a tactical first-person multiplayer shooter set in a dystopian sci-fi universe. The game’s official site is more specific about its core loop: it calls Marauders a first-person multiplayer extraction looter shooter set in industrialized deep space.
That makes it the clearest choice here if you want science-fiction combat where entering a run, surviving, and protecting or improving your gear are part of the appeal. Persistent gear and XP and upgradeable spacecraft give progression a place alongside the immediate firefight.

Its defining trade-off is that multiplayer extraction is central. It is not the pick on this list for a self-contained, solo squad campaign. Choose it when you want tactical sci-fi combat with the uncertainty of other players and the stakes of an extraction loop.
Star Wars Republic Commando: lead a squad through a campaign
Aspyr presents Star Wars Republic Commando as a first-person game in which you lead an elite Republic Commando squad on infiltration missions. Its appeal is the squad-leader premise: rather than joining a multiplayer extraction run or planning a co-op horror expedition, you take the lead in a campaign built around an elite unit.

GTFO: tactical teamwork with a horror focus
GTFO’s official site describes it as a hardcore cooperative horror shooter. Its official wiki describes four-player FPS play involving stealth, resource management, and defending positions.

- New Pointstreak system that rewards players both for landing kills and completing objectives
- Weapons proficiency system that allows you to customize your favorite weapons, making them more effiecent in any map or mode
- Online/offline 2-player co-op Special Ops Survival mode that earns you experience through 16 frantic objective-based missions
- New play modes, including: Kill Confirmed mode, Team Defender mode and user generated match modes
- Integration with 'Call of Duty: Elite,' an online multiplayer oriented service launched simultaneously with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Those systems make GTFO a strong adjacent recommendation if what you mean by “tactical” is coordinating with a team, choosing when to stay quiet, and managing what you have. But horror and co-op are central to the experience: it is not presented by its official sources as a conventional military sci-fi FPS. Go in for tense cooperative planning, not for a squad campaign or extraction PvPvE.
