Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor clearer visibility in a realistic FPS, start with your display’s native resolution, turn off motion blur if it obscures movement, and tune field of view, brightness, anti-aliasing, and detail settings in the game itself. There is no universal “best settings” preset: the game’s rendering, your display, and your hardware all affect what looks clear and runs smoothly.
Start with the display, not the quality preset
Use your monitor’s native resolution and aspect ratio as the baseline. Confirm the game is running on the intended monitor and, if the game exposes the option, select an appropriate refresh rate. These controls are commonly grouped with display mode, render resolution, V-Sync, and frame limits, but their names and locations vary by game. Activision’s Modern Warfare PC settings guide documents those categories in its Display section; it describes a 2019 interface, so use it as an example of what to look for, not as current menu directions.
Changing resolution can affect both detail and performance, so establish a clear baseline before lowering it. Make sure you are judging the game at the resolution and display settings you intend to play with.
Adjust the settings that most directly affect visibility
Brightness: reveal shadows without washing out the scene
Raise brightness modestly if dark areas hide opponents, then check that bright areas and overall contrast remain readable. Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends PC settings guidance says to “Increase slightly to improve visibility.” That is a game-specific starting point, not a universal calibration value.

Motion blur: test it off
If world, weapon, or camera motion blur makes enemies or attacks harder to track, turn it off and compare. NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 graphics and performance guide recommends considering this in competitive Crucible matches for maximum visibility of enemies and attacks. The guide reported no performance impact from the toggle in its tested context; that does not establish how every game implements the effect.
Field of view: balance awareness with target size
A wider field of view reveals more of the surroundings, but distant opponents appear smaller. For Apex Legends, EA recommends 90–110 as a starting range and says 110 is common among competitive players, while noting that preference and platform matter. Do not apply that range automatically to another shooter. Adjust FOV in small increments and compare peripheral awareness with the legibility of distant targets.

Lower detail selectively when performance or clutter is a problem
When frame delivery is unstable or effects obscure opponents, try lowering settings such as shadows, volumetric lighting, effects, or ambient occlusion. EA’s Apex guidance puts several such options at low or disabled for its performance-oriented starting point. It also says, in the context of Apex, to use the lowest graphics settings possible when maximizing performance or FPS. That is not proof that every low setting improves visibility: some detail may help separate a target from its background, so keep what remains useful and runs smoothly on your system.
Lower only a few related options at a time, then test before changing more. Riot Games Support’s graphics-performance guidance likewise recommends incremental adjustments and testing between changes; its page was listed as published October 7, 2026, but the text could not be confirmed from the page itself. The practical point is to judge the actual game rather than assume that a preset will suit every PC.

Compare anti-aliasing modes in motion
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges, but the result depends on the game and method: edge smoothing can come at the cost of fine texture or small-detail sharpness. Compare available modes while moving through a representative scene, looking at both shimmering edges and the clarity of distant targets.
The difference between official recommendations illustrates why a blanket “on” or “off” rule is unreliable. EA lists anti-aliasing as None in its Apex Legends competitive-oriented suggestions. NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 guide describes SMAA as clearer than FXAA in its cited comparison. Those are game-specific implementations, not contradictory universal rules. The same NVIDIA guide reported costs of 1.7 FPS for SMAA and 0.5 FPS for FXAA in its particular Destiny 2 comparison; those figures are not a current benchmark for other games or hardware.

Use a repeatable test instead of changing everything at once
- Record your baseline. Note the current display mode, resolution, aspect ratio, refresh rate, FOV, brightness, blur, anti-aliasing, and detail settings.
- Choose a representative scene. Use a practice area or repeatable gameplay situation with both dark and bright areas, movement, and targets at different distances.
- Change one setting or a small related group. For example, test blur separately from FOV, or lower a group of costly effects together.
- Compare the same conditions. Check whether targets stand out from backgrounds, edges remain stable during movement, distant detail is readable, and gameplay stays smooth.
- Keep or revert the change. If a setting improves one aspect but makes another worse, decide which trade-off matters more for the way you play. Then test the next adjustment.
Use four checks for each comparison: target visibility, image stability while moving, FOV versus distant target size, and performance stability. For anti-aliasing, add edge smoothing versus fine-detail sharpness; for shadows and effects, include target separation and visual distraction. Without testing on the named game and system, do not assume a setting produced a measurable FPS gain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a universal preset fails
Games can use the same setting name for different visual effects or performance costs, and hardware and display conditions vary. Even official advice differs across shooters: Apex’s competitive-oriented starting point lists no anti-aliasing, while NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 guide describes situations where anti-aliasing improves edge clarity. The reliable approach is to treat recommendations as starting points, then verify visibility and stable performance in the game you actually play.
