Squad is the closest all-round alternative to WARDOGS. It matches the 100-player scale, modern combined-arms warfare, logistics, fortifications and voice-led teamwork without requiring you to learn a full simulation. Choose Arma Reforger if realism, modding and open-ended operations matter most; Hell Let Loose if you want 100-player World War II battles with tanks, artillery and a moving frontline; and Insurgency: Sandstorm if you want the same modern tactical tension in smaller, infantry-first fights.
WARDOGS entered Early Access on 10 September 2026. Its defining mix is three teams contesting randomized 2×2 km Control Zones inside larger maps, with vehicles, logistics, construction, destruction, proximity voice chat, XP and cash that persists between matches. The recommendations below are based on which parts of that formula you want to keep—and which you are willing to trade away.

What makes WARDOGS different?
WARDOGS is built around 100-player, three-team battles rather than a conventional two-sided round. The active objective is a randomized 2×2 km Control Zone, but the zone sits inside a larger battlefield where transport, supply work, construction and vehicle movement shape the fight. The result is a tactical shooter in which the frontline can be influenced by more than marksmanship.

- Objective: randomized Control Zones measuring 2×2 km.
- Combined arms: infantry, vehicles, logistics and construction operate in the same battle.
- Destruction: structures and defensive positions can be damaged or removed.
- Economy: players earn cash for actions such as reviving squadmates, transporting teammates and controlling the objective; that cash persists between matches.
- Communication: proximity voice chat makes local coordination part of the battlefield.
- Progression: cash and XP provide a longer-term layer beyond a single match.
The official Early Access listing describes the game as fully playable but still evolving. Its stated one-to-two-year development window includes planned maps, weapons, vehicles, progression features, objective variations and balance or stability work. That matters when choosing an alternative: the games below are established substitutes for specific parts of WARDOGS, not promises that every WARDOGS system already exists elsewhere.

Which game is closest to WARDOGS?
| Game | Best fit | WARDOGS elements it carries over | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squad | Modern combined-arms teamwork | 100-player battles, vehicles, logistics, fortifications, tactical communication | More formal squad and commander structure; no documented persistent cash economy |
| Arma Reforger | Realism, modding and sandbox operations | Large terrain, realistic weapons, vehicles and tactical objectives | Cold War setting, more simulation-heavy systems and flexible session lengths |
| Hell Let Loose | Historical large-scale warfare | 100-player coordination, infantry and vehicle teamwork, objective pressure | World War II equipment, artillery and a resource-driven shifting frontline |
| Insurgency: Sandstorm | Compact, lethal modern infantry combat | Modern weapons, tactical communication and high consequences | Smaller infantry engagements with little emphasis on vehicles, construction or huge maps |
If you want the fewest compromises, start with Squad. It preserves the modern setting and the organizational scale while giving every player a recognizable role in a structured team. The other three are better when one particular WARDOGS feature—simulation, historical warfare or close-quarters lethality—is more important than the full package.
Squad: the closest modern all-round match
Why it feels familiar
Squad advertises 100-player battles, normally organized as 50-versus-50 engagements. Its core loop combines infantry, armored vehicles, logistics trucks, supply networks and player-built fortifications. That combination maps directly onto the part of WARDOGS in which winning depends on moving people and material, not simply reaching the objective first.
Communication is layered rather than limited to a single team channel. Nine-person squads coordinate locally while leaders communicate across the wider force, and the in-game VoIP system supports that chain of command. A squad can therefore operate as a self-contained unit while still receiving an overall plan. This is a closer match for players who enjoy WARDOGS proximity chat but want more deliberate organization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow the match structure differs
Squad uses commander-led objectives and logistics instead of WARDOGS’s randomized three-team Control Zones. The battlefield is still large and combined-arms, but the rules are more established: squads claim tasks, logistics players maintain supplies, and builders place or reinforce defensive positions. There is no documented equivalent of WARDOGS’s cash that persists between matches, so progression is less about accumulating a personal combat wallet and more about executing the current operation well.
Who should choose it
- Choose Squad if you want modern weapons and vehicles at WARDOGS scale.
- Choose it if you prefer explicit squad roles, a commander layer and repeatable logistics routines.
- Choose it if you want a mature ruleset rather than an Early Access system that is still adding maps and progression.
Squad’s recommended requirements explicitly list a microphone. A headset with a microphone is therefore a practical part of the setup, not an optional luxury, when your enjoyment depends on coordinated play.
Arma Reforger: the realism and sandbox choice
What it preserves
Arma Reforger takes WARDOGS’s military framing toward simulation. It offers a Cold War sandbox with realistic weapons and gameplay systems, expansive terrain, multiplayer, co-op and single-player options. Its Workshop supports extensive community modding, allowing players to add scenarios and content beyond the default game.

The important carry-over is not a fixed player count; it is the sense that an operation can develop through movement, reconnaissance, fire support and supply decisions. Conflict mode can last from about an hour to several days, so the experience is less like a self-contained match and more like a campaign that may continue across a long session. Game Master lets a player create and curate missions in real time, which is useful when a group wants to design its own WARDOGS-like objectives.

Where the learning curve rises
Arma Reforger expects more patience with navigation, weapon handling and planning. Its systems are designed to model military procedures rather than smooth them into a fast arcade loop. You may spend meaningful time orienting on terrain, establishing a route, checking equipment or waiting for a coordinated assault. That friction is the attraction for simulation-minded players, but it can feel slow if what you want from WARDOGS is immediate action around a randomized control zone.
Who should choose it
- Choose Arma Reforger for authentic-feeling ballistics and map-and-compass navigation.
- Choose it if community-made scenarios and mission editing are as important as the stock modes.
- Choose it when you want operations that can last hours or days instead of a tightly bounded round.
It is the strongest alternative for players who view WARDOGS as a gateway to military simulation. It is not the closest replacement for persistent cash, a three-team match structure or a quick drop-in session.
Hell Let Loose: 100-player warfare with a historical front
What carries over from WARDOGS
Hell Let Loose keeps the large battlefield and the need for coordination. Its battles support 100 players and combine infantry, tanks and artillery. Capturing ground changes the shape of the engagement, and the front line can shift dynamically as one side gains or loses sectors.
The game also includes an RTS-inspired resource meta-game. Resources influence what a team can deploy and how it sustains an attack, giving logistics and command decisions consequences beyond the immediate firefight. That creates a useful parallel with WARDOGS’s cash and objective rewards: both games make battlefield contribution broader than kills, although the underlying economies work differently.
The trade-offs
The setting is World War II, so modern weapons, contemporary vehicles and WARDOGS’s present-day atmosphere are absent. Historical equipment and doctrine shape engagement ranges, silhouettes and tactics. Construction and destruction exist within the game’s own rules, but it is not a modern sandbox in which the player can freely reproduce every WARDOGS building or vehicle scenario.

Who should choose it
- Choose Hell Let Loose if a visible frontline and clear territorial momentum appeal to you.
- Choose it if you want tanks and artillery integrated into a 100-player battle.
- Choose it if historical equipment is a feature rather than a compromise.
It is the best historical counterpart to WARDOGS, particularly for players who enjoy the pressure of a large objective but do not need modern technology or persistent personal currency.
Insurgency: Sandstorm: smaller, harsher and infantry-first
Why it belongs on the list
Insurgency: Sandstorm concentrates on lethal close-quarters combat. Its official description emphasizes the consequences of every bullet and movement, with teamwork presented as the route to survival. Modern weapons, tactical communication and careful positioning remain central, so the moment-to-moment tension can feel familiar to a WARDOGS player.
The difference is scale. Sandstorm is the choice for someone who wants the modern tactical identity without 100-player maps, vehicle convoys, construction systems or a broad logistics layer. Engagements are tighter, sightlines are shorter and individual decisions resolve fights quickly. You spend less time moving a force across a large battlefield and more time clearing, holding and surviving within a compact combat space.
Who should choose it
- Choose Sandstorm when infantry combat matters more than combined arms.
- Choose it if you want a modern setting with high weapon lethality and short travel times.
- Choose it when a smaller team fight is preferable to managing vehicles, supplies or fortifications.
It is not a substitute for WARDOGS’s economy or large-scale warfare. It is the focused branch of the comparison: modern tactical shooting stripped down to movement, communication and consequences.

How to choose in three questions
Do you want WARDOGS’s scale or its gunfights?
For 100-player combined-arms warfare, pick Squad. Hell Let Loose offers the same headline scale if World War II is acceptable. For modern gunfights where the map can be smaller and every shot is dangerous, pick Insurgency: Sandstorm.
How much simulation can you tolerate?
Arma Reforger is the most simulation-forward option. Squad sits between arcade shooting and military realism, giving you structured roles without requiring every procedure to be modeled. Hell Let Loose applies realism through historical equipment and a frontline economy. Sandstorm is direct and lethal, but its compact format makes it easier to understand quickly.

Do you need a persistent personal economy?
WARDOGS is the only game in this group documented here as rewarding actions such as revives, transport and objective control with cash that carries between matches. If that long-term wallet is the feature you cannot give up, none of the alternatives is a one-for-one replacement. Choose the game whose match loop you prefer, and treat progression as a different design rather than an equivalent system.

Voice communication is central to WARDOGS and to the strongest alternatives. WARDOGS uses proximity chat, while Squad adds multiple VoIP layers for squad and command coordination. Arma Reforger, Hell Let Loose and Insurgency: Sandstorm also reward teams that share enemy positions, movement plans and supply needs.
- Use a headset with a microphone so callouts do not feed back into the team channel.
- Keep callouts specific: identify direction, distance when known, enemy type and your intended action.
- Separate urgent warnings from routine information; a vehicle threat and a request for supplies should not sound identical.
- If you join a structured Squad unit, learn its squad and commander channels before the first serious operation.
A microphone is explicitly included in Squad’s recommended requirements. For WARDOGS, it is equally sensible because proximity communication is one of the game’s stated systems.
What to expect when switching from WARDOGS
From three teams to two-sided command
Squad and Hell Let Loose generally organize the battle around opposing forces rather than WARDOGS’s three-team contest. That makes frontlines and command priorities easier to read, but it removes some of the uncertainty created by a third faction that can attack either side.
From randomized zones to established objectives
WARDOGS changes the location of its Control Zone. Squad’s objectives and Hell Let Loose’s sectors are more structured, so learning the likely flow of an operation can matter more than improvising around a newly generated zone.
From persistent cash to team resources or no wallet
Hell Let Loose’s resources belong to its strategic meta-game, while Squad emphasizes logistics during the current battle. Arma Reforger and Sandstorm focus on their modes and missions rather than documenting a persistent WARDOGS-style cash account. If you enjoy earning money for support actions, pay attention to how each game recognizes non-kill contributions instead of assuming the systems are interchangeable.
From Early Access evolution to established rules
WARDOGS is planned to evolve for roughly one to two years after its September 2026 Early Access launch. Squad, Arma Reforger, Hell Let Loose and Sandstorm each have their own ongoing updates, but their core identities are already clear. Pick an alternative when you want a known ruleset today, and return to WARDOGS as its promised maps, vehicles, objectives and progression features arrive.
Quick Recap
Bottom line: the best pick for each kind of WARDOGS player
- Closest overall: Squad, for 100-player modern combined-arms teamwork with logistics, fortifications and structured VoIP.
- Most realistic: Arma Reforger, for Cold War simulation, expansive terrain, modding and operations that can last from an hour to days.
- Best historical equivalent: Hell Let Loose, for 100-player World War II battles with infantry, tanks, artillery and a shifting resource-driven frontline.
- Best smaller infantry option: Insurgency: Sandstorm, for modern close-quarters combat in which movement and every bullet carry severe consequences.
