The best Terminator game for most players depends on the kind of action they want: choose Terminator: Resistance for a story-led Future War shooter, Terminator 2D: NO FATE for retro side-scrolling action, or Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance for real-time strategy. Each takes a different approach to the franchise, so genre and continuity matter more than a single overall ranking.

Best story-driven shooter: Terminator: Resistance
Resistance is the clearest pick if you want to fight Skynet’s machines in the Future War rather than replay the events of a film. Its official description follows Jacob Rivers in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, where plasma weapons, stealth, hacking, scavenging and crafting sit alongside story missions and side quests. The site says player actions affect survivors and the ending.
Space.com ranked it second on its updated list, praising its atmosphere and story while criticizing its limited polish and lack of a big-budget finish. That is the publication’s assessment, not a universal verdict.
#1 Best Overall
- Run and gun or sneak and hack through Skynet's defences!
- Interact with a motley group of survivors and change their fates!
- Get under the skin of the iconic T-800 series Infiltrator and strike out against Resistance forces with the new INFILTRATOR MODE.
- Improved framerates, graphical fidelity, faster load times, and the new hardware features of the DualSense controller
Check the edition before choosing a platform
The official site lists PS4, PS5, Xbox One and PC/Steam. Xbox Series X|S upgrade and Complete Edition details are separate: the FAQ says the Complete Edition is a separate Xbox application, and that the Xbox physical edition includes all content on disc. It also says the Complete Edition package is not planned for other platforms. Physical Xbox One owners who use a disc-free Xbox Series S face upgrade limitations because the console cannot read the disc; the FAQ also documents PS5 Enhanced performance information. Confirm the exact platform and edition on the official FAQ before buying.
Best retro arcade action: Terminator 2D: NO FATE
NO FATE is the natural choice for a quick-moving, side-scrolling take on the franchise. You control Sarah Connor and the T-800 in missions against the T-1000, then lead the Resistance as John Connor in Future War missions. The official game page describes a mix of recognizable Terminator 2: Judgment Day scenes and original scenarios, with multiple endings.

- See the world of Terminator 2: Judgment Day like never before with detailed 2D sprite artwork of your favorite characters and scenes. Enjoy a cinematic soundtrack featuring recrafted music from the legendary score and all-new compositions. Mix things up with multiple different game modes to unlock and choose from: Story Mode, Arcade Mode, Infinite Mode, Boss Rush, Mother of the Future and Level Training!
- The Day One Edition comes with a Reversible Cover Sleeve, “Unknown Future” Cloth Poster, 25mm Collectible Metal Arcade Token, Full Color Manual Book, and Collector’s Box.
Its six named modes are Story Mode, Arcade Mode, Infinite Mode, Boss Rush, Mother of the Future and Level Training. Reef Entertainment lists Bitmap Bureau as developer and itself as publisher, and gives a release date of December 12, 2025 for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Its listing says the game is available physically and digitally; it lists retro release timing as TBA. Check the publisher’s platform and format listing for the relevant version.

PlayStation options worth knowing about
The US PlayStation listing says the game has no spoken dialogue. It identifies basic controller remapping, adjustable difficulty, practice mode and pausing, as well as the ability to play without motion controls, touch controls, vibration or adaptive trigger effect. These are PlayStation listing details; do not assume every platform version has identical options. See the US PlayStation listing for its version-specific feature information.
Best strategy alternative: Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance
If you would rather direct forces than fight from a first-person view, Defiance is the genre outlier. Space.com describes it as a Windows PC real-time strategy game released February 21, 2024, developed by Slitherine. It uses the Dark Fate timeline, where Legion—not Skynet—is the AI threat, and includes playable factions, offline skirmishes and competitive online multiplayer. It is a poor fit if you specifically want the classic Skynet and T-800 continuity.
