Quick answer: which Terraria content mod should you play?
| Mod | Best for | Scale and identity | First-run recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thorium | A first large mod, multiplayer, and extra classes | Broad expansion that stays close to vanilla Terraria | Best default choice for most players |
| Calamity | Maximum scale and a substantial endgame | Overhaul-style progression with dozens of bosses and enemies across the game | Best for experienced players wanting a long, highly directed run |
| Fargo’s Souls | Challenge systems, boss reworks, and powerful accessories | Significant vanilla revamps rather than simply a larger item list | Best when difficulty and build optimization are the point |
| Mod of Redemption | A broad Calamity alternative | Large-scale additions at all points of progression | Best for a self-contained second overhaul |
| The Stars Above | Story, companions, abilities, and cross-mod flavor | An additive systems and narrative layer with modular weapons and subworld features | Best alongside a compatible content setup when you want more than bosses and loot |
These are not interchangeable versions of the same experience. Thorium expands Terraria’s vocabulary without discarding its basic rhythm. Calamity asks you to learn a more authored progression and continues far beyond the vanilla endpoint. Fargo’s Souls turns familiar encounters into a systems-heavy challenge. Mod of Redemption supplies its own full-game arc. The Stars Above is most distinctive when its characters and ability systems are part of the reason you are playing.
What makes a Terraria mod a “content mod”?
A content mod adds new gameplay rather than only changing convenience. That can mean bosses, enemies, biomes, weapons, accessories, classes, quests, narrative events, subworlds, or a replacement progression. Quality-of-life projects can make inventory and building less tedious, but they should not be mistaken for a major content overhaul.

The distinction matters when planning a world. One large content mod can alter recipes, boss order, balance, and save data. Several small utility mods are usually easier to combine, while two full overhauls may both load and still produce an unbalanced campaign. Treat every combination as a deliberate ruleset instead of assuming that compatibility in the menu means compatibility in design.
tModLoader and the 2026 compatibility decision
tModLoader is the installation layer. It is an officially endorsed, freely available add-on for Terraria and is where the major content mods are published. You launch the tModLoader version from Steam, then subscribe to or download mods through its Workshop or Mod Browser interface.
The practical complication in 2026 is version timing. Terraria 1.4.5 has triggered a months-long compatibility effort for tModLoader, so the branch shown in your Steam installation may not match the branch used by a mod’s latest stable release. Do not create a permanent world until every major mod in your planned set shows support for the same Terraria and tModLoader line.
What to verify before starting a world
- The exact Terraria version and tModLoader branch displayed by your installation.
- The current Workshop or Mod Browser version for each major content mod.
- Whether required libraries, DLC-style compatibility modules, or optional dependencies are listed as current.
- Whether multiplayer players are using the same mod list and versions.
- Whether the mod page warns that an update can require a new world or character.
A version number in an older guide is a reference, not a guarantee. For example, the official Thorium page lists release 1.7.2.8 for Desktop Terraria 1.4.4.9 and tModLoader 2023.11.3.3. That line identifies the environment for that release; it does not establish that the same build is current after the 1.4.5 transition.
1. Thorium: the best first large content mod
Thorium is the safest recommendation when you want “more Terraria” rather than a complete replacement. Its official project page states that it contains over 2,600 new items, 11 challenging boss fights, hordes of new enemies, one new biome, and three new classes. Those figures are the Thorium Mod team’s published totals and should be understood as a snapshot of the cited release, not a promise that every future build will show the same count.
The important quality is distribution. Thorium places additions through ordinary Terraria progression, so a new player can encounter its weapons, materials, bosses, and biome without having to learn an entirely separate game. Its three classes also make it a strong group choice: a party can experiment with roles that vanilla Terraria does not provide while still recognizing the underlying crafting and exploration loop.

Why Thorium works for a first modded run
- Vanilla-adjacent pacing: the world still feels like Terraria, with extra decisions layered onto familiar milestones.
- Large but legible scope: more than 2,600 items create variety without requiring the player to memorize a new endgame before starting.
- Multiplayer value: additional classes and shared boss progression give a group reasons to coordinate builds.
- Flexible commitment: you can focus on its bosses and classes without making every vanilla system unrecognizable.
Thorium is not the right answer if your priority is the most extreme post-Moon-Lord campaign or the harshest possible boss challenge. It is the right answer when you want a substantial first expansion and a world that remains recognizably Terraria.
2. Calamity: the scale and endgame pick
Calamity is the choice for players who want the largest, most heavily authored expansion in this shortlist. Its official wiki describes many hours of endgame content, with dozens of enemies and bosses distributed through vanilla progression. The result is not simply a larger item catalogue: the mod establishes its own progression expectations, balance assumptions, and long post-Moon-Lord arc.
That scale rewards an experienced Terraria player. You will spend more time learning which bosses belong to which stage, how new resources fit into crafting, and which mobility or defensive options the mod expects you to have. The payoff is a campaign with a much deeper back half than vanilla Terraria and a strong sense that each tier was planned as part of one system.
Who should choose Calamity?
- Players who have completed vanilla Terraria and want a long second campaign.
- Builders who enjoy adapting loadouts repeatedly as the progression opens new tiers.
- Groups that want a shared challenge with a substantial post-Moon-Lord route.
- Players specifically looking for the biggest boss-and-endgame expansion rather than a light supplement.
Calamity is best treated as a self-contained overhaul-style run. Do not assume that another major overhaul will be balanced beside it merely because both appear in the mod list. If you are adding a companion or utility layer, confirm that the integration is documented for your exact versions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Fargo’s Souls: the challenge and systems pick
Fargo’s Souls is aimed at players who want Terraria’s rules and encounters pushed hard. Its documentation describes a mod that adds content and significantly revamps vanilla content across progression. The focus is not only on new bosses; it is also on accessories, mechanics, and combinations that reward careful build planning.
Fargo’s projects are easy to confuse. Fargo’s Mutant Mod is primarily a quality-of-life project, while Fargo’s Souls Mod is the content and challenge overhaul. Mutant can be a useful convenience layer, but installing it alone does not give you the full Souls experience.

What makes a Fargo’s Souls run different?
- Reworked vanilla encounters: familiar bosses and systems can demand new responses.
- Accessory-driven builds: progression often asks you to think about powerful combinations rather than one weapon at a time.
- Challenge orientation: the mod is a better fit for players who enjoy repeated attempts and optimization than for a relaxed first playthrough.
- Optional Calamity path: the project documents an official Calamity-Fargo’s Souls compatibility DLC, giving players a supported route to combine those systems when the current versions align.
The Calamity compatibility DLC is a documented compatibility path, not evidence that every Fargo’s and Calamity combination is automatically balanced. Check the DLC’s current requirements and keep a backup before enabling it in an established world.
4. Mod of Redemption: a full-progression Calamity alternative
Mod of Redemption is for players who want another large, self-contained campaign rather than an add-on to a familiar one. Its official wiki describes the remastered project as a large-scale content mod that adds content at all points of the game. That means its identity is spread across early exploration, midgame milestones, late-game bosses, and the material and recipe structure connecting them.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose it when you want broad coverage but do not want to replay the same authored route as Calamity. It is particularly attractive after finishing one major overhaul: you retain the satisfaction of planning a complete progression while learning a different set of encounters and item relationships.
What to expect from Mod of Redemption
- A progression that begins adding value early rather than saving all of its content for the final tiers.
- A self-contained structure that is easier to understand when played as the principal content mod.
- Potentially changing availability as tModLoader branches and Workshop builds move forward.
Because its availability can change with loader updates, verify the current Workshop listing before committing a long-term world. If the listing shows a different supported branch from your installation, wait rather than forcing the load order.
5. The Stars Above: the story, companion, and cross-mod layer
The Stars Above stands apart because its appeal is not measured only in the number of bosses or items. Its official pages describe companions, weighted ability systems, modular ultimate abilities, upgradable Aspected Weapons, and Celestial Cartography. The design gives your character a more persistent identity: companions and abilities become part of how you play, not merely another chest of equipment.
The mod also documents multiplayer subworld transit on tModLoader 1.4.4 and lists integrations or dialogue for Calamity, Secrets of the Shadows, Verdant, Fargo’s Souls, Spirit, Starlight River, Calamity: Wrath of the Gods, and Thorium. These integrations can add context and interactions, but they are version-sensitive features. Confirm that the integration is enabled for the exact build you plan to use.

Why choose The Stars Above?
- Companion-driven identity: the mod’s two prominent companions and related systems give the campaign a narrative presence.
- Modular abilities: weighted ability systems and customizable ultimate abilities create build decisions beyond ordinary weapon tiers.
- Aspected Weapons: upgradable weapons provide a longer-term progression hook instead of a single replacement item.
- Cross-mod context: documented dialogue and integrations can make a mixed mod list feel more intentional.
- Subworld play: multiplayer subworld transit is supported on the specified tModLoader 1.4.4 environment, subject to current compatibility.
Pick The Stars Above when story systems and companions are central to what you want. If you only want the maximum number of bosses, Calamity or Thorium is a more direct fit.
How the five mods compare by the decisions that matter
| Decision | Thorium | Calamity | Fargo’s Souls | Mod of Redemption | The Stars Above |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overall scale | Large expansion; official page cites over 2,600 items | Very large, with many hours of endgame content | Large systems and progression revamp | Large-scale content across the full game | Medium-to-large additive systems layer, with documented integrations |
| Change to vanilla progression | Moderate; preserves the familiar rhythm | High; authored progression and an extended endgame | High; significant vanilla reworks | High; additions at all stages | Variable; adds its own progression beside a main content route |
| Endgame depth | Substantial, but not the main selling point | Primary selling point | Challenge and optimization continue through advanced systems | Broad endgame as part of its full progression | Ability, weapon, companion, and subworld depth rather than a pure boss ladder |
| Boss and accessory challenge | New bosses and class options with a familiar difficulty curve | Many bosses and a demanding long-form campaign | Central focus, including reworked vanilla encounters | New encounters distributed across progression | Secondary to companions, abilities, and integrations |
| Class variety | Three new classes are cited by the official page | Extensive build variety; current class details vary by version | Accessory and system combinations are central | Broad equipment progression; current class totals not stated | Weapon and ability systems supplement your chosen class |
| Story and companions | Not the primary focus | Not the primary focus of this comparison | Not the primary focus | Not the primary focus | Primary differentiator |
| Cross-mod integration | Works best as a principal content mod; verify each pairing | Has a documented Fargo’s Souls compatibility route, but balance remains version-dependent | Official Calamity DLC path is documented | Use as a self-contained alternative unless current notes say otherwise | Documented integrations include Calamity, Fargo’s Souls, Spirit, Thorium, and others |
“Not stated” in a comparison cell means the cited project material does not establish a reliable current number; it is not a claim that the feature is absent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a mod for your specific situation
If this is your first modded Terraria playthrough
Choose Thorium. Its vanilla-adjacent structure reduces the amount of new progression you must learn at once, while the added classes and large item pool still make the run feel meaningfully different. Add only a small number of quality-of-life mods after confirming compatibility.
If you have finished Calamity and want something different
Choose Mod of Redemption for another full-progression campaign, or Fargo’s Souls if you want the next run to test execution and build knowledge. The Stars Above is a strong addition when your reason for replaying Terraria is narrative context and character-driven abilities rather than another boss ladder.
If your group is starting a multiplayer world
Thorium is the clearest starting point because its extra classes give players distinct roles without requiring the group to learn an entirely separate progression. The Stars Above can add multiplayer subworld transit and companion systems when the group’s tModLoader branch supports them. Calamity works well for an experienced group prepared to coordinate a longer progression.
If you want the most bosses and items
Calamity is the scale pick. Thorium’s published total of over 2,600 items is substantial, but Calamity’s defining advantage is the breadth of its authored progression and endgame. Fargo’s Souls is preferable when the challenge and reworking of existing encounters matter more than raw quantity.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
If you want to combine large mods
Use a documented compatibility route rather than improvising. Fargo’s Souls has an official Calamity compatibility DLC, and The Stars Above lists integrations with several major projects. Even then, install one major overhaul first, test a short throwaway world, and only then begin a campaign you intend to keep.
Installation and a safe first-world workflow
- Install or update tModLoader through Steam. Launch the tModLoader entry rather than the vanilla Terraria executable.
- Check the active branch. Note the Terraria and tModLoader versions shown by Steam and the in-game main menu.
- Open Workshop or Mod Browser. Find the current listing for your chosen content mod and read its requirements and supported version.
- Install dependencies first. If a mod lists a library, compatibility DLC, or optional integration as required, install the matching current build.
- Enable one major content mod. For a first run, do not stack Calamity, Thorium, and Mod of Redemption as if they were interchangeable expansions.
- Add only essential utility mods. Confirm that each one supports the same branch and does not alter recipes, boss triggers, or world generation unexpectedly.
- Test a disposable character and world. Enter the world, craft an early item, summon or locate an early encounter, and join a multiplayer session if relevant.
- Back up your saves. Copy your world and character files before changing a major content mod, removing a dependency, or switching branches.
- Create the long-term world only after the test succeeds. Record the exact mod list and versions so every multiplayer participant can reproduce it.
A backup is prudent operational practice. It does not imply that every mod corrupts saves; it gives you a recovery option when a loader update, removed dependency, or changed world-generation rule makes a campaign unavailable.
Multiplayer and cross-mod pitfalls
Everyone needs the same environment
Multiplayer players should use the same tModLoader branch, mod versions, enabled integrations, and load order where the project specifies one. A host and client on different builds can see missing items, rejected connections, or world-loading errors even when the mod names look identical.
Loading is not balance
Two overhauls can coexist technically while producing duplicate progression gates, unexpected recipe conflicts, or a difficulty curve no project intended. A documented compatibility module is stronger evidence than a forum claim that two mods “work together,” but it still does not guarantee that every optional add-on is balanced.
Subworlds and world generation deserve testing
The Stars Above’s multiplayer subworld transit is documented for tModLoader 1.4.4. Test that route with a temporary world before relying on it in a campaign. Any mod that adds a biome or changes generation should be enabled before creating the world, not added casually after the map already exists.
Troubleshooting a failed or unstable setup
- The mod does not appear: confirm you launched tModLoader, not vanilla Terraria, and check that the Workshop item supports your active branch.
- The game reports a missing dependency: return to the mod’s current listing and install the named library or compatibility module at the required version.
- A world will not load after an update: disable the newly changed major mod, restore the backed-up world and character, and test the previous known-good branch.
- Multiplayer rejects a player: compare branch, mod versions, enabled integrations, and load order on every machine.
- Progression feels incoherent: remove one of the major overhauls and retest. Compatibility in the loader does not prove that the combined balance is intentional.
- A new biome or subworld is missing: verify that the content mod was enabled before world generation and that the current version still uses the same trigger or travel method.
Do not overwrite your only save while diagnosing a problem. Keep the backup, use a disposable test world, and change one variable at a time so you can identify whether the branch, dependency, or content combination caused the failure.
Final recommendation
For most readers, the order is straightforward: play Thorium first, move to Calamity for the largest endgame, choose Fargo’s Souls for a challenge-focused systems run, try Mod of Redemption as a broad alternative, and add The Stars Above when companions, story, and cross-mod interactions are the feature you value most. Whichever route you choose, verify the current tModLoader and Workshop status before generating the world; in 2026, version alignment is part of choosing the mod, not an afterthought.
