The practical choice depends on your player count, where your group lives, the renewal price, how much configuration control you need, and whether you can restore saves easily. Our top pick is Godlike.Host, which runs The Forest servers on its own game panel with up to three free backups a day, free DDoS protection, and ten data-center locations; see the current plans for its capacities. Other current listings show Nitrado plans for 8, 12, and 20 slots and GPORTAL plans for 10 and 12 slots. Nitrado and GPORTAL prices and features are provider claims captured on October 13, 2026, so confirm the currency, region, term, taxes, renewal total, and available locations at checkout.
This guide compares those published offers, explains what their features do and do not prove, and gives a dated but usable path for running a dedicated server yourself.

Current The Forest hosting offers
The table below records what each provider publicly listed on October 13, 2026. These are not laboratory results, uptime measurements, or a market average. A slot count is the advertised capacity of a plan, not a guarantee of low latency or stable performance under every world and player load.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

GPORTAL’s 90-day 10-slot listing works out to $14.39 per 30 days when divided mathematically, but it is still a separate term offer, not proof that monthly renewal will use that rate. Do not compare plans until the slot count, billing period, currency, and nearest available location are equivalent.

How to choose a plan for your group
Start with the real simultaneous player count
Count players who will connect at the same time, not everyone who might occasionally join. Leave headroom if your group frequently expands: an advertised eight-slot plan is a poor match for a regular ten-player session, even if only eight people are online at launch. The cited Steam Community tutorial documents a default maximum of eight players for its baseline dedicated-server setup; hosted panels may expose different slot packages, so verify the actual limit in the plan and configuration panel.
- Up to eight regular players: compare Nitrado’s 8-slot listing with any provider’s equivalent plan, using the same region and term.
- Nine to twelve players: Nitrado’s 12-slot and GPORTAL’s 10- or 12-slot listings are the directly documented capacities in this comparison.
- Large or changing groups: Nitrado’s listed 20-slot plan provides more advertised room, but confirm that your game build and mods support the intended population.
Put the server near the majority of players
Distance is a useful first filter for latency, but the sources do not provide comparable ping tests. Nitrado’s US-page listing displays Frankfurt, London, New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney. GPORTAL’s cited offer shows Central Europe. Select the nearest location to most players, then have one or two players test actual in-game responsiveness during a busy session. A provider’s list of cities is not a guarantee that every city is available for every slot count or billing term.
Decide how much administration you need
A simple private co-op world may need only a password, player slots, and reliable save handling. Modded play or frequent rule changes benefit from editable configuration and clear restart behavior. GPORTAL advertises web-interface configuration editing. Nitrado advertises modded hosting. Those statements identify available features, not compatibility with every mod or a guarantee that settings survive an update. Ask where a setting is stored, when it is applied, and whether a restart is required.

Evaluate backups as an operation, not a number
GPORTAL advertises 50 GB of backup storage, while Godlike.Host advertises up to three free backups a day with restore. Neither figure describes retention length, off-site protection, restore time, or whether backups include every configuration and mod file. Before paying, locate the panel’s backup page and answer four questions:
- Can you create a manual backup before installing a mod or changing a world setting?
- How many automatic snapshots are retained, and for how long?
- Can you restore a selected snapshot without opening a support ticket?
- Does a restore include the world save, configuration, and server identity data, or only the save folder?
Make a manual snapshot before every major change even when a host advertises automatic backups. Keep at least one copy outside the hosting account if the panel permits downloads.
Understanding price and renewal cost
The published prices are short-term listings, not guaranteed long-term rates. Nitrado’s figures are 30-day offers from a US page: $12.99 for eight slots, $17.79 for 12, and $24.99 for 20. GPORTAL shows $15.99 for 10 slots and $17.47 for 12 slots for 30 days, plus a 10-slot 90-day listing at $43.17. Godlike.Host prices change with region and on-page offers, so see the current plans.

At checkout, record the amount charged today and the amount shown for the next renewal. Check whether the displayed figure includes taxes, whether changing a location changes the price, and whether a promotional term converts to a higher recurring rate. Compare total cost for the period your group actually intends to keep the server; a lower introductory figure can be more expensive after renewal.
Configuration, updates, and control-panel behavior
Provider panels
Hosted panels normally expose start, stop, restart, password, player-limit, file, and backup controls, but the exact labels differ. Some provider panels can overwrite configuration values at startup, so do not assume another host handles files the same way.
When a setting appears to revert, check the panel first, then inspect the provider’s startup or command-line field. Save a backup, change one value, restart, and verify the result in-game. Keep a written copy of important values so a panel migration does not erase your intended rules.

Automatic game updates
Whether a host applies game updates automatically varies by provider. Automatic updates reduce maintenance, but they can also change behavior or break a mod. Confirm whether you can schedule a restart, delay an update, or roll back to a previous build. If no rollback exists, take a world backup before the update window.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Running a dedicated server yourself
The Forest has a separate dedicated-server tool. The Steam Community guide titled “Dedicated Server Tutorial” documents installation through Steam’s Tools section or with SteamCMD. That guide identifies game version v1.07 and was last updated January 23, 2019, so treat its values as a baseline and check the current server application and operating-system requirements before exposing a server to the internet.
Install the server application
- In the Steam client, open Library, change the library filter to Tools, and look for The Forest Dedicated Server. Install it, or use SteamCMD as described by the tutorial.
- Locate the installed server directory and create a separate copy of its configuration and save folders before changing anything.
- Choose whether to pass settings as command-line parameters or in a
Server.cfgfile. The tutorial states that command-line settings override matching values in the configuration file, so keep one authoritative value for each setting. - Set the server name, password, player limit, and save behavior according to the current server documentation. Do not copy a hosted provider’s panel syntax into a self-hosted file without checking that it is supported by your build.
Create and protect the server identity token
The tutorial identifies Steam app ID 242760 for creating a server identity token. Treat that token like a password: enter it only in the intended server configuration or hosting panel, never publish it in screenshots or chat, and regenerate it if you believe it has leaked. The Steam Community instructions explicitly advise against sharing the login token.
Best Value
- Beautiful Hidden Object scenes
- Lushly detailed and unique landscapes to discover
- Meet characters that explore the world along with you
- Use your unique magical ability to solve puzzles and uncover clues
Forward the documented baseline ports
The 2019 tutorial lists 8766, 27015, and 27016 for TCP/UDP forwarding and documents a default maximum of eight players. Create matching firewall and router rules, direct them to the server computer’s fixed local address, and test from outside your home network. These are dated baseline values, not universal requirements: a current build, a different operating system, or a managed host may use other ports.
For a rented server, use the ports shown in the provider’s Network tab or documentation. Do not blindly forward the tutorial’s numbers to a hosted instance. A query-port mismatch can leave a running server difficult to find, which is why the game port and query port must match the values assigned by your host.
Test before inviting everyone
- Start the server and wait for the process to report ready.
- Join from the same local network only to confirm that the world loads and the password works.
- Have one player connect from a different network. Confirm that the server appears in the expected browser or can be reached by the documented address and port.
- Build, save, disconnect, restart, and reconnect. Verify that the world and player progress persist.
- Change one setting, restart, and confirm which source won when both the command line and
Server.cfgcontain that setting.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server runs but nobody can find it
- Confirm the process is still running and that the assigned game and query ports are open.
- Check the router’s forwarding destination and the computer’s local firewall profile.
- For a rented server, compare the panel’s Network values with the values in the startup configuration; a query-port mismatch can prevent discovery.
- Test from an external network. A successful connection from the host machine does not prove that internet forwarding works.
A setting keeps reverting
Look for a provider-panel field that regenerates the file at startup. On some services, panel settings can overwrite configuration values. Change the value in the panel or remove the conflicting command-line parameter, restart, and inspect the effective setting rather than repeatedly editing the generated file.

A modded server fails after an update
Stop the server, restore the last known-good save and configuration backup, and check that the mod supports the current game build. If the host offers no rollback, ask support whether a previous build is available before allowing players to continue in the changed world. Nitrado’s listing advertises modded hosting, but that does not mean every mod combination is supported.
Players lose progress
Stop making changes until you identify the newest intact snapshot. Restore a backup to a test instance when possible, confirm that the world opens, and only then replace the live save. If the panel offers only a fixed number of snapshots, download an additional copy after major milestones.
Security and administration checklist
- Use a non-obvious server password and change it when a player leaves the group.
- Keep the Steam server identity token private; do not place it in public repositories, screenshots, or support posts.
- Limit panel accounts to people who actually administer the world, and enable two-factor authentication if the provider offers it.
- Back up before updates, mod changes, configuration edits, and world transfers.
- Record the server’s region, slot count, assigned ports, renewal date, and current build in a private admin note.
- After every restart, verify the effective player limit, password, world, and query visibility.
Which option should you investigate?
- Choose Godlike.Host first if frequent automatic backups with restore, sub-user permissions on a game panel, and a choice of ten locations matter most; see the current plans for slot options.
- Choose Nitrado first if your priority is selecting among the published 8-, 12-, and 20-slot capacities, choosing from the displayed city list, or investigating the advertised modded-hosting option.
- Choose GPORTAL first if browser-based configuration and a stated 50 GB backup-storage allocation matter more than having a 20-slot listing. Confirm the Central Europe location and the actual restore workflow.
- Self-host if you already control a suitable always-on computer, router, firewall, and reliable upload connection and are comfortable maintaining updates, port forwarding, credentials, and backups. It avoids a monthly rental but makes every operational failure your responsibility.
Verdict
Our top pick for The Forest in 2026 is Godlike.Host: its game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection, and ten locations make it the first host to check. Whichever host you pick, the right plan matches your actual slot count and puts the server near most players at a renewal price your group accepts. Nitrado has the broadest set of explicitly listed capacities among the priced offers. GPORTAL publishes clear configuration and backup-storage features. None of these listings establishes superior latency, uptime, support response, or overall performance. Compare like with like, test the server during a real session, and confirm the backup-restore path before moving a long-running world.
