There is no independently measured “best” The Forest host in 2026. The sensible choice depends on your group’s player limit, the nearest available data center, recurring price, configuration access, and how backups are handled. Current listings give you several practical starting points, and Godlike.Host is listed first here as a game-server host with a Pterodactyl-based panel, ten data-center locations, and up to three free backups a day with restore. After it, Nitrado shows 8-, 12-, and 20-slot plans, and GPORTAL shows 10- and 12-slot plans plus a longer 90-day listing. These are provider claims and listings, not a controlled performance test. Confirm the region, renewal total, taxes, ports, and included features at checkout before paying.

What to compare before choosing a host

A slot count is the number of simultaneous players a plan is configured to allow; it is not a guarantee of frame rate, latency, uptime, or save reliability. Compare like with like: the same approximate player count, currency, rental term, and closest region. A low headline price can become expensive when renewed monthly, while a larger plan can be wasteful if your group normally has four to eight players.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Capacity: Choose a limit that covers your regular group and occasional guests. The dated Steam Community tutorial documents eight players as the default maximum for a basic dedicated-server setup, but a provider’s plan limits and current server build may differ.
  • Location: Select the data center geographically closest to most players. A server in another continent can add avoidable latency even when the host’s hardware is adequate.
  • Recurring cost: Compare the renewal price and the term, not only a first-month promotion. Check currency, tax, setup fees, automatic renewal, and cancellation terms.
  • Control panel: Look for editable settings, password and administrator controls, restart scheduling, log access, and a way to change the server name and visibility.
  • Updates: Determine whether the host applies game updates automatically, lets you schedule them, or expects you to perform them manually.
  • Backups: Count available backup slots or storage, then verify how often snapshots run, how long they are retained, and whether you can restore a selected save yourself.
  • Ports and discovery: Ask which game and query ports are assigned. A running process that uses the wrong query port can be difficult to find in the server browser.

No consulted source supplies a controlled, cross-provider comparison of latency, uptime, support response, or save-restore success. Treat those as questions to verify with a host, not as ranking criteria that can be settled from an advertising page.

Current listed plans in October 2026

The following figures are listings observed on October 13, 2026. They can change by region, currency, promotion, or billing term. Nitrado’s figures are from its United States offer page; availability elsewhere may differ.

GPORTAL 10 slots: $15.99 for 30 days

10 slots: $43.17 for 90 days
Central Europe offer shown; web-interface configuration editing; 50 GB backup storage advertised Players who value browser-based editing or a stated backup-storage allowance

The prices above are not market averages. For example, the listed Nitrado 8-slot plan works out to $12.99 for one 30-day term, while the GPORTAL 10-slot listing is $15.99 for 30 days; that does not establish that either server is faster or more reliable. GPORTAL’s $43.17 figure is specifically a 90-day listing, so do not compare it with a 30-day price without calculating the same billing period and checking whether the term is prepaid or promotional.

How the listed options differ

Godlike.Host: listed first for panel control and daily backups

Godlike.Host is game server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based panel that includes a task scheduler, sub-users with permissions, and a config editor, plus SFTP/FTP access to your files. It lists 10 data-center locations: US West Coast, US East Coast, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine, Finland, and Singapore. Free DDoS protection and a personal firewall for player access and IP filtering are included, and up to three free backups a day with restore make the restore test described below easy to run. Support is available 24/7 by live chat or ticket, and a voluntary money-back guarantee covers a first purchase within 3 calendar days. See the current plans for slot sizes and regions, and confirm the player cap and ports in the panel as you would with any host.

Nitrado: several slot sizes and displayed regions

Nitrado’s US page lists 8-, 12-, and 20-slot choices at $12.99, $17.79, and $24.99 respectively for 30 days. That makes the 8-slot plan a straightforward match for a small group, while the 20-slot option leaves room for a larger community. The page displays Frankfurt, London, New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney, but a displayed city is not a promise that every slot size is available there at checkout. The same page advertises modded hosting; confirm which mods are supported, how they are installed, and whether updates can overwrite them.

Rank #2
Renegade Game Studios Fox in the Forest ,2 Player Card Games, Trick-Taking Strategy Game for Adults, Compact Travel Board Game, 30 min
  • Strategic Trick-Taking Gameplay: Master unique character abilities and special powers that let you change the trump suit, lead after losing tricks, and outwit your opponent with clever card play
  • Compact Travel-Friendly Design: Perfectly portable for date nights, vacations, and weekend getaways with its small box that fits easily in bags and luggage without sacrificing quality components

  • Balanced 2-Player Experience: Expertly designed trick-taking mechanics ensure neither player gains unfair advantage, rewarding strategic thinking and creating intense memorable moments every game

GPORTAL: configuration editing and a stated backup allowance

GPORTAL’s captured Central Europe offer lists 10 slots for $15.99 per 30 days and 12 slots for $17.47 per 30 days. It also shows 10 slots for $43.17 over 90 days, a different term that must be normalized before comparison. The provider advertises web-interface configuration editing and 50 GB of backup storage. Storage capacity alone does not reveal snapshot frequency, retention, restore speed, or whether backups are independent of the game server; ask those questions before relying on it for a long-running world.

Choosing by group size and playing region

Your situation Practical starting point Checks before purchase
Up to eight regular players An 8-slot listing, such as Nitrado’s $12.99/30-day offer Confirm the actual player cap, nearest city, renewal price, and whether you can restore a save
Nine to twelve players A 10- or 12-slot listing from GPORTAL or a 12-slot listing from Nitrado Make sure the cap is simultaneous players, not account or reservation capacity; compare identical 30-day terms
Large or irregular groups A 20-slot listing, such as Nitrado’s published option Check whether the game build and mods remain stable at your intended population; do not equate more slots with better performance
Players spread across continents Choose the city that minimizes the distance for the largest share of the group Ask whether every listed city is selectable for your plan and whether a move later costs extra

If your group is split between North America and Europe, there is no universally correct location. Pick the region that serves the people who play most often, or rotate only if the host allows a transfer without losing the world. Use a short trial term when the provider offers one and test everyone’s actual connection before committing to a longer period.

Hosted setup: a reliable order of operations

  1. Record the plan details. Save the checkout summary, selected city, slot limit, billing term, renewal date, assigned IP or hostname, and every port shown by the provider.
  2. Open the server panel. Find the Network or Connection page and note the game port and query port. Do not substitute the generic ports from an old tutorial if the panel assigns different values.
  3. Set identity and access controls. Create a strong server password, add administrator identifiers only for trusted people, and keep the server identity token private. Share the join address and password through a private channel.
  4. Configure gameplay. Edit the world name, difficulty, friendly-fire or gameplay rules, visibility, and any supported mod settings. If both a panel and a configuration file expose the same option, determine which one is authoritative at startup.
  5. Apply and restart deliberately. Save changes, stop the server if required, then start it and read the console or log for errors. Some panels rewrite configuration values during startup.
  6. Create a known-good backup. Make a manual snapshot after the first successful launch and record its timestamp. Confirm that the panel shows the backup as restorable rather than merely listing storage usage.
  7. Test discovery and joining. Have a player on the same platform search by name, then join by address if supported. Check that the server appears after a restart and that the displayed player limit matches the plan.
  8. Test recovery. Change a harmless setting, create another snapshot, and restore the earlier one in a maintenance window. This verifies the actual restore path before a world is damaged.

Self-hosting with the dedicated-server tool

The Forest has a separate dedicated-server tool. The Steam Community “Dedicated Server Tutorial” documents installing it from Steam’s Tools section or through SteamCMD. That tutorial identifies game app ID 242760 for creating a server identity token. It is dated January 23, 2019 and identifies game version v1.07, so use it as a baseline and check the current server application and host documentation for changed settings.

  • RICH STRATEGY & COMPONENTS: Explore a modular game board with 12 location tiles, gather resources, complete legendary deeds, encounter mysterious creatures, and use dozens of cards, tokens, and unique player boards to shape every adventure.
  • YOUR CHOICES SHAPE THE STORY: Every moral decision influences your reputation as a noble hero or cunning villain while affecting your path through the forest and your race for fame and victory.

  • FOR FANTASY & STRATEGY FANS: Designed for families, teens, and adults who enjoy adventure games, storytelling, exploration, resource management, and immersive fantasy board game experiences.

Install the server application

  1. In the Steam client, open Library, change the filter to show Tools, and install the dedicated-server tool for The Forest. Alternatively, use SteamCMD and the app ID documented by the tutorial.
  2. Launch the server once so it creates its folders and initial configuration files, then stop it before editing settings.
  3. Choose either command-line parameters or the Server.cfg file for configuration. The tutorial states that command-line settings override matching values in the configuration file, so avoid maintaining conflicting values in both places.

Networking baseline

The tutorial documents TCP/UDP forwarding for ports 8766, 27015, and 27016, with a default maximum of eight players. These are documented baseline values, not a guarantee for every current build. Forward the exact ports used by your running server, reserve the host computer’s local IP address in the router, and allow the server executable through the operating system firewall. If you rent a server, use the provider’s assigned ports instead of forwarding these numbers blindly.

Secure the server identity token

Create the server identity token with app ID 242760 as described by the tutorial. The Steam guide recommends not sharing the login token. Treat it like a password: enter it only in the intended server configuration or hosting panel, never paste it into a public chat or screenshot, and regenerate or revoke it if you believe it has been exposed.

Self-hosting requirements and trade-offs

  • You need a computer that can remain powered on while people play, a stable upstream connection, router access for port forwarding, and someone available to apply updates and recover the world.
  • The machine must be reachable from the internet. Carrier-grade NAT, restrictive firewalls, or changing residential IP addresses can prevent outside players from connecting.
  • You control the files and backups, but you also own the failure modes: disk loss, accidental configuration edits, power interruptions, and untested restores.
  • A rented host removes much of the network and maintenance work, but you depend on its panel, allocated ports, support process, retention policy, and renewal terms.

Backups, updates, and configuration pitfalls

Backup capacity is not the same as recoverability

“50 GB of backup storage” and “up to three free backups a day” describe advertised capacity or quantity, not a tested restore result. Before trusting a service, find out whether snapshots are automatic or manual, whether they include the whole world and configuration, how long they are retained, and whether a restore replaces the current files immediately. Keep an independent copy of important saves when the panel permits downloading them.

Rank #4

  • Easy to Learn, Challenging to Master: Familiar trick-taking foundation makes it instantly approachable for newcomers while unique powers and strategic decision-making keep every game fresh and engaging

Updates can change configuration behavior

Automated updates reduce the chance of running an obsolete build, but they can also restart a server at an inconvenient time or interact with mods. Ask whether updates are scheduled, whether you receive a warning, and whether the host keeps a rollback path. Panels can overwrite certain configuration values at startup; on any host, check the effective configuration after an update rather than assuming the file you edited remains authoritative.

When players cannot find the server

  • Confirm that the process is running and that the server name and password were saved.
  • Compare the panel’s game and query ports with the ports in the active configuration.
  • Check the firewall and router rules, or the host’s Network tab if rented.
  • Restart after correcting a port and wait for the browser listing to refresh.
  • Use a direct address connection if the platform supports it, then recheck browser discovery.

A query-port mismatch can leave a running server hard to find. That is a useful diagnostic example, not evidence that every host uses the same port layout.

Questions to ask support before paying

  • Which cities are actually available for the exact slot plan and billing term?
  • What is the renewal price in my currency, including tax?
  • Can I edit the full configuration, or are some values controlled by the panel?
  • How are updates scheduled, and can I delay one while checking mod compatibility?
  • How many backups exist, how often are they made, how long are they retained, and can I restore or download one?
  • Which ports are assigned, including the query port, and can they change after a restart?
  • Can the world be transferred to another plan or location without starting over?

Final decision framework

Listed first here is Godlike.Host for its choice of ten locations, daily backups with restore, and a full game panel, with Nitrado and GPORTAL as the other listed options. Choose the smallest plan that covers your real simultaneous player count, then select the nearest available location and compare the full renewal cost over the period you expect to play. Favor a panel with transparent configuration precedence and a restore process you can test. A provider listing may be attractive because of a low price, more slots, mod support, automated updates, or advertised backup space; none of those features alone proves lower latency, higher uptime, or better support. If you prefer control and already have a reliable, reachable computer, self-hosting with the dedicated-server tool is viable, provided you maintain updates, port forwarding, security, and independent backups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is eight players the maximum in The Forest?

Eight players is the default maximum documented by the January 2019 Steam Community dedicated-server tutorial. Current hosted plans can advertise different slot limits, so verify the cap in the provider panel and current server build you intend to use.

Should I use the ports 8766, 27015, and 27016 for a rented server?

Not automatically. Those ports are the tutorial’s baseline self-hosting values. A rented server may assign different ports; use the provider’s Network tab or documentation.

Does more backup storage guarantee safer saves?

No. Storage size or backup-slot count does not establish snapshot frequency, retention, restore behavior, or save integrity. Test a restore and keep an independent copy when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep the same world when changing hosts?

That depends on whether the current host lets you download the world and configuration and whether the new host accepts them. Confirm transfer support before cancelling the old server.

Is self-hosting cheaper than renting?

The sources do not establish a universal cost result. Self-hosting avoids a rental bill but requires an always-on computer, network access, maintenance, and your own recovery plan; compare those costs and responsibilities with the recurring plan price.
