If you want third-party controllers that attach to a Switch for handheld play, the MOBAPAD M6 HD is the clearest match in this shortlist. The HORI Split Pad Pro is another attached, handheld-only option, but it gives up several detached Joy-Con features. For docked or tabletop play, the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller is a capable full-size wireless alternative—not a Joy-Con replacement.
Those distinctions matter more than a single “best” label: attachment, motion controls, vibration, NFC/amiibo support, and compatibility vary by model. Product features below are manufacturer specifications or, where noted, editorial descriptions—not independent test results.
Which kind of third-party Switch controller do you need?
“Joy-Con alternative” can mean either controllers that slide onto the console’s rails or a separate full-size gamepad. They serve different setups, so compare them by how you play:
- Attached handheld play: MOBAPAD M6 HD or HORI Split Pad Pro.
- Detached wireless play: MOBAPAD M6 HD also advertises wireless use; the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth is a separate full-size controller.
- Motion, vibration, or amiibo: check the exact model’s feature list. Support is not uniform across third-party controllers.
Best direct Joy-Con-style replacement: MOBAPAD M6 HD
MOBAPAD describes the M6 HD as primarily designed for the original Nintendo Switch and says it supports both handheld and wireless modes. That makes it the most direct fit here for someone who wants an attached handheld controller but may also want to play wirelessly. The manufacturer also claims Switch 2 compatibility; check the precise product generation and supported features before buying.

MOBAPAD lists Hall-effect joysticks and a six-axis gyroscope. It distinguishes the M6 HD from the M6S by specifying an ALPS motor with HD Rumble in the M6 HD, while the M6S uses a rotor motor without HD vibration. Best full-size wireless alternative: 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller
The 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller is a conventional full-size gamepad, not a controller that attaches to the Switch. It suits docked or tabletop play, or anyone who prefers a separate controller. 8BitDo lists motion control for Switch, vibration, a charging dock, two programmable rear buttons, profiles, and Bluetooth, 2.4G, and USB-C connectivity.
Its official page specifies Switch compatibility from system version 3.0.0 and Switch 2 compatibility from system version 20.1.1. Best fit: players who want a full-size pad, a charging dock, and rear buttons for supported setups. Its form factor makes it the wrong choice if your main requirement is a controller attached to the console for handheld play.
Handheld-only option: HORI Split Pad Pro
The HORI Split Pad Pro is designed to replace Joy-Con with larger grips while attached to the console. Switch Compare’s January 15, 2025 guide describes it as handheld-only: it cannot be used for tabletop or docked play. That guide also says it lacks motion controls, rumble, and NFC. Because this is an editorial description rather than a current manufacturer specification, check the exact model variant and its current feature list before purchasing.

Check compatibility and features before buying
Third-party controllers may work with many Switch games, but compatibility does not mean every controller supports every function. Switch Compare’s buyer-guide advice is to check the individual model’s specifications against the features you need. - Console attachment: confirm the controller fits your console model and is meant for attached handheld use. A wireless gamepad is not automatically rail-compatible.

- Vibration: distinguish a general vibration claim from a specific HD Rumble claim.
- NFC/amiibo: verify this separately; do not infer it from wireless or motion support.
- Connectivity: check whether the model uses wireless, a 2.4G connection, USB-C, or more than one option, and whether that fits your setup.
- Switch 2: verify compatibility for the named model and the functions you plan to use. Compatibility statements do not automatically apply across a brand’s product line.
What changes with Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo Australia says original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to it; charging them requires an original Switch console or a licensed charging accessory. Nintendo also lists its Switch Pro Controller as usable wirelessly with Switch 2. MOBAPAD and 8BitDo separately claim Switch 2 compatibility for the M6 HD and Ultimate Bluetooth Controller, respectively. Check the exact product generation, firmware or system requirements, region, and supported features in the relevant manufacturer information before relying on those claims.
