For original Nintendo Switch owners, the Mobapad M6 HD is the most feature-rich option on paper, the NYXI Hyperion 2 is worth considering for a roomier grip and Hall Effect sticks, and the HORI Split Pad Pro is a handheld comfort choice—not a full detachable Joy-Con replacement. They suit different needs, so check attachment, wireless use, and the features your games rely on before choosing. Switch 2 owners should look at Switch 2-specific models or verify compatibility carefully: a 2026 listing or review does not mean a controller supports both generations.
How to choose third-party Joy-Cons
“Third-party Joy-Con” covers controllers with very different designs. Some slide onto the original Switch for handheld play and also work wirelessly when detached; others are designed to stay attached to the console. A controller’s compatibility with one Switch generation does not establish compatibility with another.
Before buying, match the controller to how you play and check each feature individually. In particular, confirm detached wireless use, stick type, rumble, motion controls, NFC for amiibo, programmable buttons, and whether its wider shape fits your case. A comfort-focused grip may feel better in handheld mode while making a standard case or detached play less convenient.
Best options for original Nintendo Switch
Mobapad M6 HD: the feature-rich choice on paper
Mobapad’s product page lists the “Mobapad M6 HD Joycons Switch Controller White” and says it supports both wireless and handheld modes on Nintendo Switch. The manufacturer lists Hall Effect sticks, HD rumble powered by ALPS motors, Omron mechanical buttons, two programmable rear buttons, micro-switch triggers and D-pad, built-in NFC for amiibo, six-axis motion/gyro, and an interchangeable cross D-pad. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test findings. Check the Mobapad M6 HD product page for current compatibility details and availability.

The page specifies wireless connection only for Switch 2, not handheld attachment. Do not assume the original-Switch handheld function carries over to the newer console. The page listed the controller at $79.99 when accessed and showed sold-out variants; price and stock can change, so check the listing rather than treating that figure as current.
NYXI Hyperion 2: wider grip and Hall Effect sticks
In a hands-on review published January 31, 2025, Nintendo Life’s Gavin Lane described the Hyperion 2 as wider and heavier than standard Joy-Con, with Hall Effect sticks, programmable rear buttons, and a grip suited to medium-to-large hands. The review also notes that its rumble is not HD, that it has no NFC reader or right-controller infrared sensor, and that its clicky micro-switch buttons may be disruptive in quiet settings. HORI Split Pad Pro: comfort for handheld sessions
iMore describes the Split Pad Pro as a wider, more supportive handheld controller. Its trade-off is substantial: according to iMore, it cannot be used off the console, uses the Switch battery, and lacks rumble, motion controls, and amiibo support. Choose it for a more substantial handheld grip only if those omissions fit your games and play style; it is not a complete replacement for detachable wireless Joy-Con. Original Switch and Switch 2 are separate compatibility checks
The three picks above have different roles for the original Switch family, and their names or a 2026 publication date do not establish Switch 2 compatibility. Mobapad’s M6 HD page specifically describes wireless-only connection for Switch 2. For other models, confirm compatibility with the exact console generation and intended mode—handheld attachment or wireless play—before buying.

There are also Switch 2-focused alternatives, including Mobapad M12-HD, reviewed by Nintendo Life in May 2026, and NYXI Hyperion 3, which Tom’s Guide describes as designed specifically for Switch 2. These are not interchangeable with the original-Switch shortlist simply because they are Joy-Con-style controllers. For a detachable controller, prioritize confirmed wireless play as well as attachment if you also play handheld. If your games use amiibo, motion aiming, or rumble, check those capabilities rather than assuming every Joy-Con-style controller includes them. Larger grips can improve comfort but may change how a controller fits in a carrying case; confirm fit for the exact model before choosing a case.
