The most reliable way to build around Thorns in No Rest for the Wicked is to use Thorns rolls on armor, pants, and a shield, then pair them with active blocking and direct weapon damage. Moon Studios’ April 10, 2026 rebalance made Thorns damage depend on damage received, added diminishing returns when stacked, and removed triggers from backstabs and ranged or spell attacks. It is now reactive support for close-range combat—not a passive enemy-clearing strategy.
What changed about Thorns?
Moon Studios explained in Together Hotfix 8, dated April 10, 2026, that Thorns and related reactive-damage setups had previously scaled enough to kill enemies without the player needing to fight them. The update rebalanced Thorns so its damage is calculated from damage received, applies a slight diminishing-returns curve when stacked, and does not trigger from backstabs or ranged or spell attacks.

Those official notes are the latest Thorns-specific balance information established here; they do not give a numerical damage formula. The current live game version as of October 8, 2026 has not been independently confirmed, so treat the hotfix as the documented baseline rather than a guarantee that no later changes occurred.
How to build around Thorns
Armor and pants
Look for Thorns on armor and pants while preserving enough defense and stamina economy to remain in close combat. The List of Enchantments identifies these as available slots. Its ranges vary by rarity, so there is no single roll value to assume across every item.

Shield
A shield with Thorns supports a block-and-counter approach: stay near an enemy, block when appropriate, and answer with your weapon. Thorns is not a reason to absorb every attack; keep room to reposition and avoid expecting a return hit from excluded attack types.
Weight and stamina
Choose armor weight with stamina recovery in mind. Moon Studios’ Together update notes say heavier armor carries a greater stamina-regeneration penalty, while lighter armor grants a greater focus-gain bonus. The practical trade-off is defense and poise versus the stamina needed to block and reposition.

Weapon and other offensive choices
Keep direct weapon damage central to the setup: it is damage you can actively deliver, while Thorns depends on eligible incoming damage and loses efficiency as you stack more. Consider armor penetration as an alternative offensive roll. A February 2026 community guide reports that Thorns and armor penetration share an enchantment group on an item, so they cannot both occupy that group there; this is a player-reported mechanic, not an official build recommendation.
How to play the build
- Stay in melee range. Thorns is meant to support contact-based combat, not replace it.
- Block or withstand eligible close-range attacks. A shield can create block opportunities, but manage stamina rather than holding a defensive stance without regard for recovery.
- Counterattack with your chosen weapon. Do not wait for reactive damage to do all the work; diminishing returns make unlimited Thorns stacking an inefficient plan.
- Change your response to excluded attacks. Backstabs and ranged or spell attacks do not trigger Thorns under the April 2026 official notes, so evade, interrupt, or otherwise handle them instead of relying on a return hit.
Thorns versus other build priorities
| Choice | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| More Thorns | Reactive damage when eligible damage is received. | Stacking has diminishing returns, and the effect does not cover backstabs or ranged/spell attacks. |
| Armor penetration | A different offensive priority that can support direct attacks. | A February 2026 community guide reports it shares an enchantment group with Thorns on an item; the guide predates the April rebalance. |
| Heavier armor | More defensive weight and poise. | Heavier armor has a greater stamina-regeneration penalty, according to Moon Studios’ Together update notes. |
| Lighter armor | Less weight burden and a larger focus-gain bonus, according to the Together update notes. | It gives up some of the defensive/poise emphasis of heavier armor. |
| Shield blocking | Fits a defensive, close-range style and can create opportunities for reactive damage. | Requires stamina management and does not make excluded attack types valid Thorns triggers. |
| Direct weapon damage | Player-controlled offense that does not depend on receiving an eligible hit. | It competes with reactive-damage rolls for item and build priorities. |
What the community guide reports—and what remains uncertain
In a February 8, 2026 guide to reactive damage, fishypixels reported that Thorns follows the incoming damage type, does not benefit from physical-damage percentage increases, benefits from armor penetration, activates on block and lifesteal, and does not activate on persistent plague-cloud damage. These are community-reported interactions, not official specifications, and the guide predates the April rebalance; use them as leads rather than guaranteed current mechanics.

The same guide estimated roughly 13 damage per maxed 40% Thorns roll and roughly 130 damage at a theoretical 400% investment. Those are dated player estimates, not a verified post-rebalance ceiling. Moon Studios has not published a numerical formula in the cited hotfix, so these figures should not be used to promise a particular damage result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there a best-in-slot Thorns loadout?
No verified best-in-slot weapon, ring arrangement, or stat allocation is established by the available evidence. Treat Thorns as a flexible defensive-offensive layer: pursue it on armor, pants, and shield if those rolls fit your items, then choose weapon, rings, and stats around your preferred combat style and current drops. The evidence supports this framework, not one exact loadout for every character.
