The better approach is to choose a combat style that fits how you want to fight, then match your weapons, armor, skills, and resource use to it. If you are returning to an unarmed character, first revisit your skill tree: the October 1, 2026 update, version 1.30, overhauled Unarmed and refunded points spent in that category.
What to know before choosing a build
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an open-world RPG with first- and third-person perspectives, a branching story, three zones, side quests, and character development through attributes, skills, and gear. The official store describes a publisher-estimated 50–70 hours of base-game content; that is an estimate, not an independently timed average. Awaken Realms’ official store

Build customization is part of the game, so think in terms of trade-offs rather than searching for a universally optimal allocation. Before investing heavily, decide which choices you actually enjoy:
Recommended Free Tools
- Combat focus: melee, ranged weapons, spells, or a mix.
- Armor load: light equipment for a different feel and mobility, or heavier armor where its benefits suit your approach.
- Status effects: whether you want to build around effects such as bleed, poison, chill, or petrify.
- Positioning and resources: whether you are comfortable spending mana, aiming for weak spots, fighting near enemies, or accepting damage to activate equipment effects.
Official announcements describe gear effects and playstyle hooks, but do not provide controlled comparisons or a ranked build list. Treat the examples below as ways to match equipment to your habits, not as tested damage rankings.

How to adapt to version 1.30
Questline and Awaken Realms announced version 1.30 on October 1, 2026, alongside the free Fists of Fury DLC. The update overhauled the Unarmed skill tree. If your character had spent points in Unarmed, those points were refunded, so open the skill tree and allocate them again against the revised perks. Official Steam announcements
Fistfighting weapons still use unarmed bonuses
Fistfighting weapons count as Unarmed attacks. That means the new weapons can be used while retaining bonuses from unarmed gear and talents, allowing a weapon-based unarmed approach rather than requiring bare fists. The developers summarized the rule: “Seven brand-new weapons. They all share one core rule: attacks made with a Fistfighting weapon still count as Unarmed attacks.”

Do not treat performance figures as guarantees
The developers also described version 1.30 Steam Deck presets targeting about 30 FPS in Quality mode and about 35–40 FPS in Performance mode. Their patch announcement estimated gains of 5 to 30 extra FPS on PC, Steam Deck, and Steam Machine depending on setup, and around 2 extra FPS on consoles. These are developer-reported targets and estimates, not guaranteed results for every device or configuration. Official Steam announcements

| Gear option | What its described effects reward | Consider it if you prefer |
|---|---|---|
| Scalesong armored-archer set and bows | Armor value, close enemy proximity, and taking damage | A ranged style that is willing to stay nearer to threats and make use of heavier armor. |
| Dolorous Pilgrim mage set and wands | Bleeding, mana spending, and spell power | Spell-focused combat where you want equipment to interact with status effects and mana use. |
Use the table as a fit check: if an effect asks you to fight near enemies or take damage, consider whether that matches your preferred positioning. If a setup rewards mana use or bleeding, make sure you are comfortable building around those mechanics. An item description is a design cue, not evidence of top damage.

Sanctuary of Sarras is an expansion, not part of the base-game build system described above. It adds its own story, equipment, dungeons, and three switchable progression trees. The official store estimates 10–15 hours of expansion content and describes more than 20 dungeons and interiors and over 100 pieces of equipment; these are publisher figures, not independently verified counts or playtime averages. Quick Recap
A practical way to build without locking into stale advice
- Pick a main combat lane. Decide whether most encounters should be handled through melee, ranged attacks, spells, or a deliberate hybrid.
- Choose the trade-offs you will accept. Consider armor load, range, status effects, and whether your setup depends on mana, weakspot hits, close positioning, or taking damage.
- Match gear effects to your intended behavior. For example, Scalesong’s described hooks suit an armored archer comfortable near enemies; Dolorous Pilgrim’s hooks suit a bleeding- and mana-oriented spell approach.
- Recheck patch-sensitive investments. After version 1.30, unarmed players should reallocate refunded Unarmed points and review the revised tree before continuing with an old allocation.
- Separate base-game and expansion advice. Verify that an item or progression system belongs to content you own before planning around it.
