Fallout: New California is the best native total-conversion-style campaign for most Fallout: New Vegas players: it adds a new world, an original branching story, companions and extensive voiced dialogue, and starts from the New Game menu as an unofficial prequel. For a massive expedition, choose Fallout: The Frontier. For a Fallout 3/New Vegas crossover, choose Tale of Two Wastelands. Projects such as Fallout 4: New Vegas, Fallout Chicago, Fallout: Revelation Blues and Fallout Atlanta belong on a watchlist rather than an install-now list because they are remakes, alpha builds or other in-progress releases.
Every option here assumes a Windows PC copy of Fallout: New Vegas. Edition, downloadable content, mod-manager and compatibility requirements differ, so prepare a clean installation before adding a campaign-sized overhaul.

What “total conversion” means in New Vegas
In the strict technical sense, a total conversion replaces most of a game’s world and systems. New Vegas’s largest projects do not all fit that definition equally. Some are self-contained campaigns built inside the New Vegas engine; one combines two Fallout games; others are remakes being rebuilt for Fallout 4. This guide uses “total-conversion-style” for a mod that gives you a substantially different campaign, worldspace or progression path rather than a collection of new weapons and texture swaps.
That distinction matters when choosing an installation. A native New Vegas campaign can be added to a working New Vegas setup. A crossover needs both games and a conversion process. A remake such as Fallout 4: New Vegas is a separate Fallout 4 project, not a file you drop into New Vegas.
#1 Best Overall
- Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
- Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
- Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
- Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
- Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.

Fallout: New California: the best native campaign
What it adds
Fallout: New California is the clearest answer to “What is the best total conversion for Fallout: New Vegas?” Its project listing describes an all-new story, a new world and multiple branching narrative paths, with hours of voiced dialogue. It is structured as an unofficial prequel to New Vegas and is launched from the game’s Main Menu rather than by selecting a quest inside the Mojave campaign.
The campaign also includes companions, giving the new setting its own party relationships instead of functioning as a short map showcase. The combination of a separate worldspace, voiced scenes and consequential branches makes it feel like a standalone Fallout adventure while retaining the New Vegas engine and role-playing framework.
Release and platform status
The Nexus Mods listing identifies version 2.3.1 and records a last update of 9 April 2020. It is a PC-only project. Those dates describe the listing metadata, not a promise that every modern mod combination will work without adjustment; use the project’s current installation notes and test it in its own profile.
Who should choose it
- Choose New California if you want an original campaign rather than another pass through the Mojave.
- Choose it when branching choices, companions and voiced scenes matter more than adding a large vehicle system or combining two existing games.
- Use a separate mod profile if your regular New Vegas setup contains gameplay overhauls, because campaign-scale files can share records and scripts with other major mods.
What it is not
New California is not a replacement for Fallout 3, and it does not turn New Vegas into Fallout 4. It is a native New Vegas campaign with its own world and story. Its PC-only status also rules out console installation.
Fallout: The Frontier: the biggest expedition-style option
Why its scale is different
Fallout: The Frontier is presented as a gigantic DLC/new-game project rather than a compact quest expansion. It offers multiple faction campaigns, voiced and branching quests, and a custom driving system. That combination gives it the broadest “expedition” identity among the projects covered here: you are entering a separate, demanding campaign with several routes through its content rather than simply extending the Mojave map.
When it is worth installing
The Frontier is the right choice if you want campaign length and variety, especially the chance to follow different faction storylines and use the project’s driving mechanics. It is less suitable when you want a minimal, low-risk addition to an established load order. Treat it as its own game-sized installation and verify current compatibility before committing a long playthrough.
Compatibility expectations
Because the project combines a large world, custom systems, voiced quests and multiple campaigns, conflicts are more consequential than they are with a small weapon or quest mod. Read the project’s current requirements, confirm the supported New Vegas edition and downloadable content, and avoid assuming that a load order built for another overhaul will be safe. If you encounter instability, reproduce it in a profile containing only the base requirements and The Frontier before adding other mods back.
Tale of Two Wastelands: the definitive Fallout crossover
How the crossover works
Tale of Two Wastelands joins Fallout 3 and its downloadable content with Fallout: New Vegas in one playthrough. That makes it the clearest answer to searches for a “Fallout New Vegas crossover mod with Fallout 3.” Rather than recreating Fallout 3’s story inside a New Vegas-sized add-on, it connects the two games into a combined experience.

What you need to plan for
This is a conversion project, not a normal single-game plug-in. You should expect to own PC copies of both games and to check the project’s current downloadable-content and edition requirements before starting. The official Tale of Two Wastelands site provides installation, FAQ, development, release and troubleshooting sections; follow that documentation instead of adapting instructions from an unrelated mod guide.
Best use case
Pick Tale of Two Wastelands when your priority is continuity between Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Pick New California or The Frontier instead when you want a wholly new setting and story. The crossover’s appeal is breadth and integration of two campaigns, not a replacement worldspace created from scratch.
Projects to watch rather than install now
Fallout 4: New Vegas
Fallout 4: New Vegas is a remake of New Vegas in Fallout 4’s Creation Engine. It is therefore not a drop-in New Vegas overhaul and cannot be installed by copying files into a standard New Vegas mod profile. Its progress, requirements and eventual release path belong to the Fallout 4 project, so treat it as a future remake rather than an immediately playable answer to this list.

ModDB lists Fallout Chicago as a DLC-sized project. A project-size label does not by itself establish a finished public campaign, so check the current ModDB entry for its release state before planning a playthrough.

Fallout: Revelation Blues
ModDB lists Revelation Blues as an alpha or otherwise in-progress project. Alpha content can change its requirements, saves and story structure; it belongs on a watchlist unless you specifically want to test unfinished work.
Fallout Atlanta
Fallout Atlanta is also listed among in-progress projects on ModDB. Verify whether a playable build is currently available and whether it is a demo, alpha or fuller release before treating it as an alternative to the finished campaign choices above.

Requirements before installing any campaign-sized mod
- PC copy of Fallout: New Vegas: Console versions are not suitable for these installations. The Fallout: New California listing specifically identifies a PC-only release.
- Correct edition and downloadable content: Check each project’s current requirements. The safest starting point for a New Vegas campaign is a supported PC edition with the downloadable content the project requests. Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition for PC is the natural package to investigate, but marketplace availability and edition contents should be checked at the time you buy.
- A clean baseline: Run the unmodded game once, confirm it reaches the main menu, then create a separate profile for the large project.
- A current mod manager: Use a maintained manager and the project’s own installation sequence. Do not mix files from different guides simply because they mention the same game.
- Storage and patience for troubleshooting: Large worldspaces, voice files and custom systems take more testing than a small plug-in. Keep backups of saves and your profile configuration.
Safe installation workflow
- Confirm the game paths. Install the required PC games in locations your mod manager can access. For Tale of Two Wastelands, verify both Fallout 3 and New Vegas before beginning its conversion process.
- Launch vanilla New Vegas once. Reach the main menu and exit. This creates the baseline configuration that installation tools expect.
- Read the project’s current requirements. Check edition, downloadable content, prerequisites, supported executable versions and known conflicts. For New California, note that the campaign is selected from the New Game menu; for Tale of Two Wastelands, use its official installation documentation rather than a generic mod recipe.
- Create an isolated profile. Disable other total conversions and major gameplay overhauls. Keep your ordinary Mojave load order intact in a separate profile so you can switch back without dismantling it.
- Install prerequisites first. Add only the utilities, patches and files named by the project’s instructions, then verify that the manager reports no missing requirement.
- Install the campaign files. Follow the project’s archive and activation order exactly. Do not add optional compatibility patches until the base campaign reaches its opening scene.
- Start a new game. Do not load a save made before the overhaul was installed. New California should be started through the New Game menu; a conversion such as Tale of Two Wastelands has its own documented starting process.
- Test before expanding the load order. Play through the opening area, confirm dialogue and world assets load, then add other mods one at a time. Keep a note of each change so a later crash has an identifiable cause.
Troubleshooting and compatibility decisions
The game crashes before the campaign starts
Return to the isolated profile and confirm the required downloadable content and prerequisites. Disable every optional mod, test the campaign alone, and then add files back individually. If the failure is specific to Tale of Two Wastelands, use its official troubleshooting section because the two-game conversion has different path and installation checks from a native New Vegas campaign.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Dialogue is silent or assets are missing
Check that the voice and resource archives were installed and enabled, then compare your file list with the project’s current instructions. Do not continue a long save while core voices or world assets are missing; correct the installation and begin a fresh game.
A save becomes unstable after adding another overhaul
Campaign-scale mods can share scripts, records and worldspace data. Remove the newly added overhaul, restore the last known-good profile and test from a new save. If stability returns, keep the projects in separate profiles rather than forcing a compatibility patch that the authors do not document.
You want to switch campaigns mid-playthrough
Do not treat these projects as interchangeable quest packs. Finish or archive the current profile, back up its saves, create a new profile and start a new game for the next campaign. This is especially important when moving between a native New Vegas campaign and a two-game conversion.
Quick Recap
How to choose in one minute
- Pick New California for the most complete released-style, native New Vegas campaign with a new setting, branching story, companions and voiced scenes.
- Pick The Frontier for the broadest expedition, several faction campaigns and custom driving, accepting a higher compatibility burden.
- Pick Tale of Two Wastelands when the goal is to connect Fallout 3, its downloadable content and New Vegas in one playthrough.
- Watch Fallout 4: New Vegas if you want a Creation Engine remake, understanding that it is a separate Fallout 4 project.
- Watch Chicago, Revelation Blues and Atlanta until their current ModDB entries establish a playable release that matches what you want to install.
