Start with Into the Breach. Its official Steam listing identifies it as a turn-based strategy game, supports SteamOS and Linux, and lists 1 GB of minimum memory. If you want a larger squad campaign and can accept a more demanding interface, XCOM 2 is the stronger second choice: Feral Interactive documents a Linux version that was fully tested on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS.
Steam Machine compatibility is not determined by genre alone. Valve maintains separate compatibility ratings for Steam Machine and Steam Deck, and a game without a native Linux build may run through Proton. Check the rating for your exact Steam Machine, then test controller behavior and text at television distance before committing to a long campaign.

What to play first
The evidence supports two clear recommendations rather than a long, speculative list.
| Game | Why it fits a Zero Company-style search | Linux path | Published requirement or test information | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Into the Breach | Officially classified as turn-based strategy and built for deliberate, turn-by-turn decision-making. | Native SteamOS and Linux support on its Steam listing. | 1 GB minimum memory listed on Steam. | The safest first installation and the best starting point for a living-room Steam Machine. |
| XCOM 2 | The deeper squad-campaign option for players who want a larger strategic commitment. | Feral Interactive provides a Linux version and documents SteamOS testing. | Feral says the Linux version was fully tested on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS; the cited FAQ does not establish current Steam Machine ratings or hardware requirements. | Players prioritizing campaign depth over the simplest setup. |
This is a deliberately short list. The available evidence verifies these two games; it does not establish a current Steam Machine rating, Linux status, or performance result for additional titles. A game being tactically similar to Zero Company is not enough to claim that it runs well on your machine.

How Steam Machine compatibility actually works
Steam Machine and Steam Deck are separate checks
Valve’s compatibility documentation treats Steam Machine and Steam Deck as separate hardware targets. A positive Deck result should therefore be treated as useful context, not as a guarantee for every Steam Machine. Processor, graphics hardware, memory, display output and controller configuration can differ substantially between Steam Machines.
Open the store page while signed in to the Steam account used by the machine and inspect the compatibility information attached to that title. Record the result for Steam Machine specifically. If the page only presents a Deck-oriented signal, use it as a clue and perform the hands-on checks below rather than treating it as certification.
Valve’s documentation explains the underlying fallback: On Deck and Machine, games without native Linux builds will be run through Proton.
Proton translates many Windows games for SteamOS, but it introduces another layer that can affect launch behavior, video playback, input, shaders and text rendering.
For Valve’s compatibility documentation, see Steamworks hardware compatibility.
Native Linux support versus Proton
- Native Linux build: The developer or publisher supplies a Linux executable. Into the Breach is the clearest example in this list because its Steam page explicitly lists SteamOS and Linux.
- Proton path: Steam runs a Windows build through its compatibility layer. Valve’s Steam Support guidance says to filter the store by SteamOS + Linux and notes that Steam Play may run some Windows-only games on Linux.
- Unverified result: A title may install and launch but still have problems with controller prompts, readable text, suspend/resume or a particular display resolution.
Use Valve’s Steam Support guidance for Linux games when a game does not advertise a native build.

Why Into the Breach is the best first choice
Verified facts that matter on a television
The official Into the Breach Steam page supplies three important facts for this use case: it labels the game as turn-based strategy, lists SteamOS and Linux support, and gives a 1 GB minimum memory requirement. Those facts reduce uncertainty before you install it on a compact living-room computer.
Native support avoids making Proton compatibility the first variable you have to troubleshoot. The low published memory floor also makes it a sensible first test on a Steam Machine with limited RAM, although a minimum requirement is not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or input experience.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWho should choose it
- Choose it if your priority is the highest-confidence SteamOS installation from the two evidenced choices.
- Choose it if you want turn-by-turn planning without first committing to a large campaign installation.
- Choose it if your Steam Machine has limited memory and you want the title with the only published minimum-memory figure in this comparison.
Do not turn the 1 GB figure into a claim that every system will deliver identical performance. It is a minimum listed by the store, not a benchmark, recommended specification or Steam Machine certification.
Why XCOM 2 is the deeper alternative
Linux support and scope
XCOM 2 is the choice when “like Zero Company” means a substantial squad campaign rather than simply turn-based battles. The research basis for that distinction is the direct recommendation that it is the deeper squad-campaign option.
Feral Interactive’s XCOM 2 Linux FAQ says its Linux version was fully tested on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS. That is meaningful evidence that a native Linux release exists and that SteamOS was part of Feral’s test coverage. It is not a current performance test for every Steam Machine model, nor does it supply a present-day Steam Machine rating in the cited material.

Who should choose it
- Choose it when campaign depth and a larger squad-management commitment matter more than the simplest installation path.
- Choose it when you are willing to spend time checking text size, controller mappings and display behavior before beginning a long campaign.
- Choose it only after confirming that your own Steam Machine has the storage, memory and graphics capability required by the current build; the cited Feral FAQ does not provide those figures here.
Because the published testing reference is Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS, treat it as historical platform evidence rather than a guarantee that every current distribution, driver stack or Steam Machine firmware behaves identically.

A practical Steam Machine buying and installation checklist
1. Identify the exact machine
Write down the Steam Machine model, installed SteamOS version, system memory, graphics hardware, display resolution and controller. “Steam Machine” describes a class of systems, not one fixed specification. The same game can behave differently on two machines carrying that label.
2. Check the store listing before downloading
- Open the game’s Steam store page.
- Look for the operating-system information and any Steam Machine-specific compatibility result.
- Confirm whether the listing says SteamOS + Linux, or whether you will rely on Steam Play and Proton.
- Read the minimum memory and graphics information that the current store page provides.
For Into the Breach, the cited listing supplies SteamOS + Linux support and a 1 GB minimum-memory figure. For XCOM 2, use Feral’s Linux documentation alongside the current Steam listing.
3. Install a short test first
Install the game before buying additional downloadable content or beginning a serious campaign. Launch it from the normal Steam interface, connect the controller you intend to use from the sofa and reach an actual playable screen. A successful installation is not the same as usable living-room compatibility.
4. Test at the television distance
Valve’s Deck Verified criteria require support for the default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, good default settings and legible text. Those criteria are written for Deck, not as a universal Steam Machine promise, but they are a useful living-room test. From your normal seating position, check:

- menus and mission text are readable without leaning toward the screen;
- the default resolution fills the display correctly;
- important actions can be reached without a mouse and keyboard;
- controller prompts match the controller actually in your hands;
- pausing, resuming and returning to Steam work normally.
Valve describes the criteria at Steam Deck Verified.
5. Save and resume
Start a new game, make a small amount of progress, exit through the in-game menu and relaunch. Then test suspend and resume if your Steam Machine uses those features. This catches practical living-room problems that an installation check will miss.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controller and TV-distance considerations
Why interface usability matters as much as frame rate
Turn-based games give you time to think, but their menus can still assume a desk monitor and mouse. A game that launches correctly can be a poor sofa choice if text is tiny or if a critical command requires an awkward cursor gesture.
Use the controller that will remain connected to the Steam Machine while testing. Do not validate with a keyboard and later assume a gamepad will expose every command. Check the tactical screen, inventory or squad-management screens, settings menu and save/load screens—not just the first playable turn.
Resolution and scaling checks
Begin with the game’s default display settings. If the text is difficult to read, try the largest available interface scale before lowering resolution. Keep the television’s picture mode and overscan settings consistent while testing; changing them can make a software problem look like a display problem.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The 1280×800 and 1280×720 figures come from Valve’s Deck criteria, so they should be treated as a practical reference rather than a statement that every Steam Machine uses one of those resolutions.
Choosing between the two games
| Your priority | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest compatibility uncertainty | Into the Breach | The Steam listing explicitly provides SteamOS and Linux support. |
| Lowest published memory floor | Into the Breach | The store lists 1 GB minimum memory. |
| Deeper squad campaign | XCOM 2 | It is the documented deeper campaign choice in this comparison. |
| Native Linux evidence tied to SteamOS testing | XCOM 2 | Feral documents a Linux version fully tested on Ubuntu 14.04.2 and SteamOS. |
| Need to minimize Proton troubleshooting | Into the Breach or the native Linux build of XCOM 2 | Both have Linux support evidence; verify the build and current store behavior on your machine. |
The table is a decision aid, not a performance ranking. Neither cited source supplies a current frame-rate test, a universal Steam Machine rating or a like-for-like graphics benchmark.
Troubleshooting when a game does not feel “well-run”
The game will not launch
- Confirm that SteamOS is up to date and restart Steam before changing compatibility settings.
- Recheck whether the title is using a native Linux build or Proton.
- If it is a Windows-only installation, consult Valve’s Linux guidance and try the Steam Play path supported by your system.
- Verify the exact Steam Machine rating rather than substituting a Deck result.
The game launches but the controller is unusable
- Reconnect the controller before launching the game.
- Test Steam Input and the game’s own controller setting separately; avoid changing both at once.
- Check every screen, including menus and squad-management views, because a controller can work in play but fail in navigation.
Text is too small on the television
- Check the game’s interface scale and resolution.
- Use the Deck criteria’s legibility principle as a pass/fail test from your normal seat.
- If the text remains unreadable, the title may be technically playable but unsuitable for your living-room setup.
Performance changes after an update
Record the SteamOS version, display resolution and compatibility path when the game works. If a later update changes behavior, compare those settings before assuming the hardware has failed. A rating or test result describes a particular software state; it does not freeze compatibility permanently.

Store listings, SteamOS builds and compatibility layers change. Reopen the game’s page when you reinstall, after a major SteamOS update and before starting a campaign that you expect to play for weeks. Confirm three things each time: the current operating-system label, the Steam Machine-specific result and the readability of the interface on your own television.
For the evidence currently available, the practical order is straightforward: install Into the Breach first, then move to XCOM 2 if you want a deeper squad campaign and your machine passes the same controller, text and resume tests. Treat Proton as a useful fallback, not as proof that a title will automatically feel native on every Steam Machine.
