If you want another game like XCOM, first decide which part you want to keep: cover-based squad fights, a campaign to manage between missions, soldiers or operatives at risk, or the satisfaction of solving a tight tactical puzzle. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the closest fit for combat mixed with scouting; Phoenix Point and Jagged Alliance 3 offer more involved campaign systems, while Gears Tactics, Invisible, Inc. and Tactical Breach Wizards take the formula in more focused directions.

Which game should you play after XCOM?

Use this quick guide to match the game to the part of XCOM you miss. These are alternatives, not interchangeable clones: some emphasize the battles, others the decisions between them.

If you want… Start with… What changes from XCOM
Scouting, stealth and a planned opening to fights Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden Real-time exploration and stealth lead into turn-based battles; the flow is not XCOM’s base-and-mission rhythm. Official game site
An alien war with a substantial strategic layer Phoenix Point Global diplomacy, economy and base systems broaden the campaign, and the systems may feel fiddly. Steam; Wargamer
Mercenaries, territory and campaign decisions Jagged Alliance 3 Its conflict is a mercenary operation, not an alien invasion. Official game site
Squad battles with less time spent managing between them Gears Tactics It keeps recognizable cover and overwatch tactics but pares back much of the between-battle management. Wargamer
Stealth missions and rising alarm pressure Invisible, Inc. Its focus is infiltration and operative risk, not a broad battlefield campaign. GamesRadar+
Shorter, authored tactical encounters Tactical Breach Wizards Fights are discrete, puzzle-like rooms rather than one part of a sprawling campaign. PC Gamer

For XCOM-style combat with scouting: Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Choose Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden if you like setting up a fight before the first turn. Its official description pairs XCOM-inspired turn-based combat with exploration and real-time stealth. You can scout, approach enemies quietly and arrange an ambush, making the transition into combat part of the tactical problem rather than just a deployment screen. GamesRadar+ also highlights that scouting-and-ambush rhythm in its alternatives guide, updated February 18, 2025.

The trade-off is a different overall loop: exploration and stealth shape the approach, rather than reproducing XCOM’s familiar base-and-mission cadence. The official site lists PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Check the current store listing for availability in your region and the exact edition.

For an alien-war campaign with more systems: Phoenix Point

Phoenix Point is the pick when the strategic layer matters as much as the firefights. Its Steam description outlines a campaign involving global diplomacy and economy management, base building and resources alongside an adaptive enemy threat. In battle, its free-aiming system gives the player direct control over soldier aim, a different emphasis from simply selecting a target.

That breadth is also the main caution. Wargamer’s guide, updated September 27, 2024, characterizes the game as potentially fiddly and a less straightforward recommendation than some alternatives. It is a better match for players who want more campaign systems to engage with, not those looking for the leanest route from one squad battle to the next. Steam lists the game’s release date as December 3, 2020; current prices and review figures can change. See Phoenix Point on Steam.

For mercenary management and an open operation: Jagged Alliance 3

Jagged Alliance 3 shifts the premise from saving the world from aliens to leading a mercenary force through a fictional country. Its official site describes turn-based combat built around action points, recruitable and developable mercenaries, territory control, militia training and the ability to manage multiple squads. Decisions affect the country’s course, giving the campaign an operational layer beyond individual missions. The official site also lists online co-op.

PC Gamer points to destructible combat environments as another part of its tactical play. This is a good option if you want persistent team and territory decisions around squad encounters, but its grounded mercenary setting and campaign structure make it a thematic departure from XCOM. See the official Jagged Alliance 3 site.

For squad fights with less campaign downtime: Gears Tactics

Gears Tactics suits players who mainly want to plan moves around cover and overwatch, then get into the next fight without as much between-mission administration. Wargamer’s September 2024 guide points to those familiar tactical ingredients while noting that the game reduces much of the downtime and decision-making between battles.

That makes it a focused choice when the combat is the draw. If what you value most in XCOM is managing an ongoing strategic campaign between missions, this is a less complete substitute.

For stealth and escalating mission pressure: Invisible, Inc.

Invisible, Inc. takes turn-based tactics into infiltration. GamesRadar+ describes missions built around stealth, objectives and an escalating alert status, with the risk of losing operatives adding pressure to each decision. Rather than winning a conventional battlefield exchange, you are trying to complete the job while the situation becomes more dangerous.

Pick it if you want stealth and risk management to define the mission. It is not the choice for a broad war campaign with the same kind of battlefield focus as XCOM. Read GamesRadar+’s XCOM alternatives guide, updated February 18, 2025.

For tactical battles as compact puzzles: Tactical Breach Wizards

Tactical Breach Wizards is the most focused option here. PC Gamer describes its combat as discrete room scenarios in which the challenge is combining character abilities to solve a tactical situation. That structure makes it a fit for players who want carefully authored encounters and the pleasure of finding a workable sequence, rather than a long-running strategic campaign.

Its puzzle-like encounters are a deliberate change of scale from XCOM’s persistent war-and-roster pressures. PC Gamer’s strategy-games guide also discusses Tactical Breach Wizards and Jagged Alliance 3.

Choose by the XCOM element you want to keep

  • Scouting before the battle: Start with Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.
  • A larger strategic campaign: Consider Phoenix Point for an alien conflict or Jagged Alliance 3 for mercenary and territory management.
  • More battles, less between-mission management: Try Gears Tactics.
  • Stealth-first tension: Choose Invisible, Inc..
  • Compact tactical problems: Try Tactical Breach Wizards.
