In Fortnite Reload v42.20, supply drops have the loot-quality edge: Epic says it increased the odds of rarer items inside them. That is a mode-specific change, not proof that supply drops are better in every playlist. In Battle Royale Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, Loot Hacks let players customize chest contents with bonus items, so chest value depends partly on the player’s choices. Treat chests as a dependable way to build a loadout and supply drops as a higher-upside opportunity that may expose you to more danger.
Which gives better loot: chests or supply drops?
There is no universal winner. In Reload v42.20, Epic says supply drops have increased odds of rarer items, but the update does not give a percentage or say the change applies to standard Battle Royale. In the current Battle Royale season, chests can be affected by Loot Hacks. The answer depends on the mode and, for those chests, the customization in play.
Epic describes a supply drop as a randomly dropped loot crate that usually contains an assortment of weapons; that definition does not promise a particular item or rarity. Epic’s supply-drop explanation
How the comparison changes by mode
| Mode and update | What Epic establishes | What it means for your choice |
|---|---|---|
| Fortnite Reload v42.20 | The Fortnite Reload Dev Team says it increased the odds of rarer items in supply drops. Drops also arrive closer to the end of storm-circle transitions, with a limit of one per circle. No percentage is stated. | Supply drops have a stated rarity advantage in this specific update, but their contents are not guaranteed. Their timing and per-circle limit are also specific to Reload. |
| Battle Royale Chapter 7 Season 4: Override | Players can spend Sprite Dust on Loot Hacks to customize chest contents by adding bonus items that cannot be found elsewhere. | Chest value can vary with the Loot Hacks a player uses; it is not one fixed, season-independent pool. |
| Creative | Chest devices can produce random combinations of weapons, ammunition, health items, and world resources. Supply-drop devices can be configured with options including landing indicators, map icons, spawn delay, access restrictions, and fall speed. | These device examples explain Creative mechanics only. They do not establish current Battle Royale loot or default supply-drop behavior. |

When to choose a chest
A chest is the practical choice when you want to build or round out a loadout without making a dedicated trip toward a descending crate. In Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, a Loot Hack can add bonus items to chest contents, making the customization you selected relevant to what you might find. Randomized contents still mean a chest is not a guarantee of any specific weapon or item.
When to go for a supply drop
In Reload v42.20, the improved odds of rarer items make a supply drop a potentially higher-upside target. But a drop is an aerial crate that arrives during the match, so approaching or contesting it can draw attention. Weigh that exposure against the possible reward and your position in the storm transition; the update does not establish that every drop is worth a detour.

How to make the decision in your match
- Check your playlist. Do not apply Reload’s rarity change or one-drop-per-circle rule to standard Battle Royale unless that playlist’s current rules confirm it.
- Check the season’s chest mechanics. In Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, consider whether your Sprite Dust Loot Hacks add items that suit your needs.
- Compare the opportunity with the exposure. A supply drop can offer better odds of rarer loot in Reload v42.20, but the contents are not guaranteed and going after it may put you in view of other players.
- Use current playlist information. Loot pools and weights can change by mode, season, and hotfix; third-party live pool percentages should not be treated as universal odds.
Epic’s Reload notes describe the rarity change qualitatively and publish no percentage, so there is no established numerical chest-versus-drop comparison. A live third-party loot-pool reference also separates playlists and notes that season plugins and hotfixes can alter pools and weights: Fortnite.GG’s loot-pool reference.
