For four-player Star Fox, use one compatible N64-layout controller per player, put a modern television in Game or low-latency mode, preserve 4:3 for original N64 video, and turn off motion interpolation. On Switch 2, choose Battle Mode, then Local Battle, set the console to four players, pair the other controllers, and review Battle Settings with Y before anyone selects a pilot.
The exact menu names vary by television and hardware, so treat picture values as starting points rather than a universal calibration. The best setup depends on whether you are playing the original Nintendo 64, a Virtual Console version, or the current Switch 2 release.

Four-player Star Fox setup at a glance
| Version | Maximum local players | Controller plan | Recommended display starting point | Available VS modes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo 64 | Four in VS play | Four compatible N64 controllers; an N64-style stick layout is the easiest fit | Game or low-latency mode, 4:3 aspect ratio, motion smoothing off, moderate sharpness | Point Match, Battle Royal, Time Battle |
| Virtual Console version | Depends on the supported console and controller configuration | Use four compatible controllers for the platform; confirm how that platform maps N64 inputs | Use the display’s lowest-latency mode and avoid processing that changes the 4:3 image | Use the VS modes included by that release |
| Switch 2 release | Up to four players in local Battle Mode | Pair one supported controller for each player before the match | Game or low-latency mode, motion interpolation off, brightness high enough for every split-screen HUD | Battle Mode local multiplayer |
Nintendo describes Star Fox 64 as a one-to-four-player game and identifies Point Match, Battle Royal, and Time Battle as its three VS game types. Switch 2 uses a separate Battle Mode flow, but it also supports four players locally when the host changes the player count and pairs the additional controllers.
Why the television and controller choices matter
Star Fox asks each player to steer, aim and react quickly. A television’s image processing can add delay between a stick movement and the result on screen, while motion interpolation can create a visibly artificial frame effect and interfere with the game’s original timing and appearance. Those features are useful for films, not for a four-player match where every player is reading a small portion of the screen.
#1 Best Overall
- It features ten buttons, one analog "Control Stick" and a 8-way directional pad, all laid out in an "M" shape.
- Compatible with 64. Perfect controller for Mario Kart, Perfect Dark, and many other classic 64 games.
- Rumble Pak & Memory Card Feature. Provides force feedback while playing video games. Enhances the gaming experience. Note: This controller doesn’t contain Memory Card and Rumble Pak in package, need to purchase separately.
- Color: Black, Grey, Blue, Red, Yellow, Transparent Orange, Transparent Blue, Transparent Green, Transparent Red; Cord Length: Approx. 6 ft.
- Third-party Product, not original 64 controller, but no difference in quality from the original controllers!
The N64 controller’s three-pronged shape is unusual, but its central analog stick and C-button cluster were designed around Star Fox controls. A modern pad with a conventional twin-stick layout may work only if the game or platform supplies a suitable mapping. For a group that includes people who have not played the game before, keeping the familiar N64 arrangement on every station reduces explanations and accidental button presses.
Original Nintendo 64 or Virtual Console: complete setup
1. Connect all four controllers before opening VS mode
Plug four compatible controllers into the console before entering the multiplayer menus. On an original Nintendo 64, inspect each analog stick first. A loose or heavily worn stick can make an Arwing drift, make a Landmaster turn unpredictably, or force a player to compensate constantly during a timed round.
A replacement N64-layout controller is the most straightforward modern option. The 8BitDo N64 2.4G model is one cited example: its receiver connects directly to the original console while retaining the familiar N64 arrangement. Check the current controller documentation and platform compatibility before buying, because wireless receivers and firmware support can change.

2. Choose the VS format that matches the group
| Mode | Best for | What to decide before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Point Match | Score-focused rounds and a running standings board | Agree on the scoring target or number of rounds, then rotate seats if the group wants equal play time |
| Battle Royal | Last-player-standing matches | Decide whether eliminated players should wait for the next round and whether the winner keeps the seat |
| Time Battle | Short sessions with a fixed clock | Set a time limit that fits the gathering and have everyone begin from a ready position |
Nintendo lists all three modes for Star Fox 64 VS play. The game type changes the rhythm of a session: Point Match rewards repeated scoring, Battle Royal creates a direct elimination structure, and Time Battle keeps matches predictable when several people are waiting.
3. Set the television for the original signal
On a flat-panel television, select the picture preset called Game, Game Mode or Low Latency. Turn off motion smoothing, motion interpolation or similarly named frame-generation features. Set the aspect ratio to 4:3 so the original image is not stretched across a widescreen panel. Leave sharpening at a moderate level; aggressive edge enhancement makes the already-soft N64 image look noisy and can produce bright outlines around text and HUD elements.
| TV control | Starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Picture preset | Game or low latency | Reduces processing that can delay input |
| Aspect ratio | 4:3 | Preserves the original N64 composition instead of stretching it |
| Motion processing | Off | Avoids interpolation artifacts and an altered motion feel |
| Sharpness | Moderate or neutral | Prevents halos and exaggerated noise around low-resolution graphics |
| Brightness | High enough to read every player’s HUD | Split-screen information should remain visible without forcing players to sit close |
These are practical starting points, not a universal calibration. Television manufacturers use different labels and processing pipelines, and the same setting can look different on two displays. Adjust only after the group has seen an actual match; a menu that looks sharp in isolation may make moving targets or HUD text harder to read.

- 🎮Third party controller, not original N64 controller(non-USB edition). The best gift for your families or friends, that will bring back those childhood memories when you are playing these classic N64 games.
4. Decide how the N64 reaches a modern screen
If the television accepts the console’s legacy video connection and produces a stable image, the direct connection may be sufficient. If the set has no suitable input or scales the signal poorly, an N64-compatible HDMI modification or an external upscaler can provide a cleaner path. A CRT-style display or CRT-style filter is the most period-appropriate presentation and can hide some of the hard pixel edges introduced by modern scaling.
Upscalers, HDMI modifications and CRT filters are separate choices. An upscaler changes how the signal is converted for a modern display; a filter changes the visual character of that converted image. Neither replaces the need for Game mode, and neither automatically guarantees that four controllers will work. Test the complete chain before inviting a group.
5. Virtual Console considerations
A Virtual Console release may run on hardware with its own controller-pairing and display settings. Connect the controllers through that platform’s supported method, then verify that all four inputs register before selecting VS. Keep the image at its intended 4:3 ratio when the platform and television allow it. If the release offers a platform-specific control remap, check that the analog stick and C-button actions still feel natural to every player.

Switch 2: start a four-player local Battle
- Launch Star Fox and choose Battle Mode.
- Select Local Battle.
- Change the number of players using the console to four.
- Pair each additional controller when the game prompts you. Do this before pilots are selected so every player has a confirmed input.
- Have the host press Y to open Battle Settings.
- Let each player select a pilot, then begin the match.
This sequence follows Nintendo’s support flow for four-player local Battle. If the fourth player cannot move, return to controller pairing rather than entering the match and attempting to diagnose the problem during play. A controller can be paired to the console yet still be assigned to the wrong player, so verify the on-screen player indicators.
Switch 2 options worth setting before the first round
Open Options or Battle Settings before the match begins. Some options cannot be changed while Battle Mode is running, which is why the host should settle them with the group at the start.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Recommended starting choice | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Reticle | On | Keep it enabled when players need a clear aiming reference, especially on a shared television |
| Arwing Y-axis inversion | Use each player’s preference | Change it for players who expect pulling down to move the craft up, or the opposite |
| Landmaster Y-axis inversion | Set separately from the Arwing | Do not assume an Arwing preference will feel right in the tank |
| Blue-Marine Y-axis inversion | Set separately from both other vehicles | Use a short test before a competitive round |
| Rumble | On unless it distracts someone | Turn it off for a player who finds vibration uncomfortable or difficult to interpret |
| Button Combos | Optional | Enable for players who want shortcut inputs associated with the original game |
| Camera rotation | Player preference | Change only after checking that the altered view does not confuse a new player |
| Mouse targeting | Off unless the player deliberately wants mouse aiming | Use only with a compatible mouse setup and a player who understands the different aiming feel |
| Mouse sensitivity | Start at the default, then adjust in small steps | Change when mouse targeting feels too slow or too twitchy |
Y-axis inversion is vehicle-specific on Switch 2. Set the Arwing, Landmaster and Blue-Marine independently instead of assuming one global toggle controls all three. The reticle is especially useful when four players share a television because it makes each player’s aiming reference easier to locate.

Choosing controllers for a four-player group
N64-layout controllers: the safest choice for the original game
An N64-layout controller keeps the analog stick, central grip and C-button actions in the positions Star Fox 64 expects. This is the best choice when the game is running on original hardware or when the group wants the least adaptation. Use one per player and test the stick range, trigger and face buttons before starting a tournament.
Modern controllers on Switch 2
For the Switch 2 release, pair four controllers that the console and game recognize. The important requirement is not a particular shell shape but four stable, separately identified inputs. If the group mixes controller types, have each player check the button prompts and inversion setting in a non-competitive test round. Do not assume that a label such as “left” or “right” on one controller uses the same physical button as on another.
Wireless versus wired considerations
Wireless controllers reduce cable clutter around a television, but battery level and pairing state become part of the pre-match check. A receiver-based N64 controller can be convenient for original hardware because the receiver plugs into the console, while the players hold modern wireless pads. Keep spare batteries or charging cables nearby and pair every controller before selecting a mode.

The image feels delayed
- Confirm that Game, Game Mode or Low Latency is active for the input used by the console.
- Disable motion interpolation and other cinematic processing on that input.
- Remove unnecessary processing between the console and television, then test the complete signal path again.
- On original N64 hardware, compare the direct connection with the HDMI-mod or upscaler path if one is available.
The N64 picture looks stretched
- Set the television or converter to 4:3.
- Turn off automatic zoom, wide, cinema or fill modes.
- Check both the console-side converter and the television; either one can apply the wrong aspect ratio.
The picture looks harsh or has bright outlines
- Reduce sharpness from an aggressive enhancement setting to moderate or neutral.
- Disable edge enhancement or super-resolution features if the television provides them separately.
- Try a CRT-style filter or a more period-appropriate display path if the group prefers a softer original look.
One player cannot control a match
- Exit to the controller-pairing step and confirm that all four devices are assigned.
- On original hardware, reseat the controller connector and test the analog stick and buttons in a menu.
- On Switch 2, repeat Local Battle, set the console player count to four, and pair the additional controller when prompted.
- Replace or recharge a controller whose battery or wireless link is unreliable.
The split-screen HUD is difficult to read
- Increase brightness enough for all four areas of the screen without washing out the image.
- Keep the television at its normal viewing distance and avoid a picture mode that darkens shadow detail.
- Use the reticle on Switch 2 so each player has a clear aiming reference.
Pre-match checklist for a four-player session
- Confirm which version is being played: original N64, Virtual Console or Switch 2.
- Connect or pair four controllers and test every analog stick, trigger and required button.
- Put the television in Game or low-latency mode.
- Turn motion interpolation off.
- Use 4:3 for original N64 output and moderate sharpness.
- On Switch 2, enter Battle Mode, choose Local Battle and set four players.
- Press Y for Battle Settings and settle inversion, reticle, rumble, Button Combos and any mouse options before the first competitive round.
- Choose Point Match, Battle Royal or Time Battle on original Star Fox 64 according to the group’s preferred format.
- Run a brief practice exchange so every player can confirm steering, aiming and camera behavior.
Practical recommendations by situation
| Your situation | Best starting setup |
|---|---|
| Original N64 on a modern flat-panel TV | Four N64-layout controllers, Game mode, 4:3, motion processing off, moderate sharpness; add an upscaler or HDMI path only if the existing connection scales poorly |
| Original N64 with worn controllers | Inspect sticks before play and use compatible replacements such as an N64-layout 2.4G controller with a console receiver |
| Switch 2 living-room session | Pair four supported controllers, choose Local Battle, set four players, press Y for Battle Settings, enable the reticle and set each vehicle’s Y-axis preference |
| Players with different control habits | Let each player set inversion and rumble individually; use a short test round before choosing the competitive mode |
| Players waiting for short matches | Use Time Battle on original Star Fox 64, or agree on a fixed rotation for Switch 2 Battle Mode |
There is no single television number that makes every setup correct. The reliable priorities are low processing delay, an undistorted 4:3 image for original N64 output, no motion interpolation, a controller layout that players understand, and a pairing check that happens before the match starts.
