There is no single best TV for every original PlayStation 2. The right choice depends first on the console’s analog output and the television’s inputs: choose a set with compatible component or composite inputs for a direct connection, or add an analog-to-digital scaler if the TV accepts HDMI only. Check the exact regional model number before buying; modern gaming features alone do not confirm PS2 compatibility.
How to choose a TV for an original PS2
Think of this as choosing a complete display setup, not just a television. Compare the connection route, the TV’s handling of the PS2’s video signal, the image presentation you want, and the total cost of any extra hardware.
- Direct analog connection: The TV has the matching component or composite input. Verify the exact model and region; port availability can differ between versions.
- HDMI through a scaler: The PS2 connects to an analog-to-digital processor, which sends a digital signal to the TV. This is the practical route for many HDMI-only sets.
- Signal and processing: Check support for the modes your games output, especially 480i, and whether the TV’s Game mode works with the chosen input path.
- Viewing setup: Consider screen size, viewing distance, and whether you want the PS2’s 4:3 image displayed in its original shape.
- Total setup cost: Include the appropriate PS2 cable and, if necessary, a scaler—not just the TV price.
Current gaming-TV recommendations can help identify modern sets to compare, but they do not establish that a TV accepts PS2 analog video or has been tested with a PS2. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 gaming-TV guide covers contemporary gaming more broadly; treat its recommendations as candidates to check, not PS2 compatibility ratings.
Three practical TV setups for PS2
Legacy television with matching analog inputs
A TV with the right component or composite inputs can connect directly using a compatible PS2 cable. This avoids adding an analog-to-digital scaler, but you still need to confirm which inputs the specific TV has and which video mode it supports. The cited evidence does not establish the condition, availability, price, or light-gun compatibility of used or CRT televisions, so assess those separately when considering a second-hand set.

- WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
- 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
- POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
- IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.
Flat-panel TV with component input
A compatible component input can provide a direct analog connection without an HDMI scaler. Check the TV manual for supported signal modes and how its Game mode affects processing and lag; the presence of component jacks alone does not establish how well a particular model handles every PS2 game’s output.
HDMI-only TV plus a scaler
If the TV has no analog input, use a processor that accepts the PS2’s analog signal and converts it to digital video. The RetroTINK-5X Pro is one example: its manufacturer lists component input, 480i support, digital video output, and motion-adaptive deinterlacing. It is a hardware option, not a TV, and those are manufacturer specifications rather than independent comparative test results. Its product page listed a price of $325 at the time represented by the cited information; check the current listing for price and availability.

What current Sony specifications show
These Sony models illustrate why a TV’s model year or gaming capability is not enough to determine whether a PS2 can connect directly. Their official specifications describe their own inputs and signal support; neither establishes PS2-specific test performance.
| Model | Documented specification | What it means for PS2 |
|---|---|---|
| Sony K-50S20M2 (2025) | 50-inch screen; four HDMI inputs; no component input and no composite input, according to Sony’s model specification. | It cannot take a direct component or composite connection through the listed inputs. Plan on a suitable analog-to-digital conversion route. |
| Sony K-55XR70M2 (2026) | Sony’s model specification lists HDMI signal support through 480p. | This does not establish analog PS2 input support or prove acceptance of a 480i signal through a particular conversion path. Confirm the scaler output and TV input requirements. |
Specifications can vary by region and exact SKU. Before purchase, match the full model number on the retailer’s listing to the manufacturer’s regional specification page and check the port labels and supported formats.

Connect and configure the PS2
Sony’s PlayStation 2 guide documents component AV output and instructs users: “When using the Component AV Cable (sold separately), you must set the mode to match the input jacks on your TV.” The guide distinguishes Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr for component video inputs from RGB for RGB inputs. Follow the instructions for your console and cable rather than assuming one setting applies to every PS2 region or model.
- Identify the TV input or scaler input. Confirm whether the signal path uses component, composite, or another supported input, and check the device manuals for its supported modes.
- Connect the matching PS2 cable. Use the relevant input on the TV or scaler. For component video, connect the video leads to the corresponding Y, Pb/Cb, and Pr/Cr jacks and connect audio as specified by the equipment manuals.
- Set the PS2 output mode to match the input. Use the console’s system configuration and the official guide. Sony’s cited SCPH-90002/SCPH-90003 guide also documents 4:3 and 16:9 screen-size choices; select the aspect setting appropriate to your display and preference.
- If using a scaler, connect its digital output to the TV. Check that the scaler’s output format is supported by the TV’s chosen HDMI input. For 480i games, confirm that the processor’s documented 480i handling matches your needs.
- Test a game and adjust the display. Use Game mode if available, then check aspect ratio and picture processing. The cited specifications do not provide a PS2 latency comparison for the TV examples, so do not infer one from general gaming-TV features.
How to narrow a 15-TV shortlist without guessing
A list of 15 television names is not useful if it implies that each one has been verified with a PS2. Current sources support categories and examples, not a PS2-tested ranking of 15 models. For each candidate, record what is actually established:
Rank #4
- PS2 Adapter: Convert PlayStation1/2/3 signal to HDMI signal (sony playstation game console connection to HDTV)
- No need to install drivers, portable, flexible, plug and play.
- PS2 to HDMI Converter: Support HDMI 16:9/ 4:3 output switch.
- NOTE: Compatible with PlayStation1/2/3 only.(Note: It's just a converter, you also can play PS1 games on PS2)
- RGB signal mode display. Video signal transfer only, can't improve the video quality.
- Exact regional model and year: Use the full SKU, not just a product family name.
- Analog inputs: Note whether component or composite is listed. If neither is present, identify the required scaler path.
- Signal support: Confirm the formats accepted by both the conversion device and the TV input; do not treat HDMI support for one resolution as proof of PS2 analog compatibility.
- Image and gaming behavior: Look for documented Game mode and signal processing information. General gaming reviews are not PS2-specific tests.
- Screen and presentation: Match size to the room and decide how the 4:3 picture should appear.
- Complete cost: Add the cable or scaler needed to make the setup work.
This approach can include older analog-input televisions, component-input flat panels, or current HDMI televisions with a scaler. The best choice is the one whose exact inputs and supported signal path are verified for your setup—not the model with the longest list of modern gaming features.
