If you want to play as a ghost, Hauntii is the clearest fit: you control a ghost protagonist who explores the afterlife and can possess creatures and parts of the environment. Ghost Master offers a different take, putting you in charge of a group of haunters rather than one ghost. Those two games are the titles the available evidence supports; it does not establish a reliable list of eight.
What counts as playing as a ghost?
A game can feature ghosts without letting you play as one. The distinction is whether the player controls a ghost protagonist directly, directs a group of ghosts, or simply encounters a ghost as part of the story. For the two best-supported examples, Hauntii gives you a ghost protagonist, while Ghost Master has you manage multiple haunters.
Hauntii: control one ghost in an exploratory adventure
Hauntii is the most direct answer to the search for games where you play as a ghost. Nintendo describes its protagonist as “a naive but brave ghost on a relentless quest for answers” on the Nintendo Switch store page. The game blends twin-stick shooting with slower exploration of the afterlife.
Hauntii can use ghostly powers to possess creatures and elements of the environment, making haunting part of the way you solve puzzles and interact with the world. The official website emphasizes that ability, while the Steam page describes exploration, combat, puzzles and collecting starry fragments. Moonloop Games developed the game, Balor Games published it, and Steam lists its release date as May 23, 2024.

Its tone is described through a mix of action and a contemplative pace, making it a fit for players who want ghost powers and exploration rather than a management-focused strategy game. Nintendo has a Switch listing and Steam has a PC listing; those pages establish storefront listings, not current regional availability or physical-edition stock.
Ghost Master: direct a team of haunters
Ghost Master is a strategy alternative, but it is not the same kind of role-playing premise as Hauntii. In the Steam-hosted manual, the player chooses where to place haunters and tells them which powers to use. You do not have direct, total control over each ghost; the appeal is planning and directing a group.

Choose it if the fantasy you want is orchestrating hauntings through a roster of supernatural beings. The manual supports that play structure, but does not establish current edition or retailer availability.

Several other games surfaced as possible leads, but their cited descriptions do not establish that the player is a ghost. Treating them as confirmed picks would blur the difference between controlling a ghost and encountering one.
