Use AMD FSR or Intel XeSS in Hogwarts Legacy. The PC version officially lists both as supported upscalers, but neither is a universal winner. Choose the option that is visible and functional on your current GPU, then compare it at the same resolution, graphics preset, and scene. Quality mode generally preserves more detail, while Performance mode trades image quality for higher frame rates. Treat DLSS 5 cautiously in this comparison: NVIDIA describes it as a broader real-time neural-rendering system that adds lighting and material detail, not merely a conventional resolution-upscaler.

What can you use instead of DLSS in Hogwarts Legacy?

On an AMD Radeon or Intel Arc PC, the relevant alternatives are AMD FSR and Intel XeSS. Portkey Games’ Hogwarts Legacy PC Features FAQ lists NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS among the game’s supported upscaling technologies. The FAQ also warns that an advertised technology may not be available on every device, so the option shown in your current installation is the practical compatibility test.

Both technologies reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution input. That can reduce the work your GPU performs at the internal render resolution and leave more headroom for a higher output resolution or steadier frame rate. The trade-off is that reconstruction quality depends on the selected mode, game scene, resolution, graphics settings, GPU, driver, and game build. A setting that looks clean in a static classroom can show shimmering, ghosting, or unstable fine detail while moving through foliage, staircases, spell effects, or busy outdoor scenes.

There is no controlled, current FSR-versus-XeSS benchmark in the available sources that establishes a single winner for every AMD or Intel GPU. You should therefore compare them on your own configuration rather than treating one vendor’s name as a guarantee.

DLSS 5 is not simply another name for FSR or XeSS

NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 announcement characterizes the technology as a real-time neural-rendering model that uses frame color and motion vectors to infuse a scene with lighting and materials. That description covers a wider rendering role than the resolution-upscaling controls most players adjust in Hogwarts Legacy. FSR and XeSS in this game should be discussed as upscaling choices; do not assume that switching between them reproduces every feature NVIDIA associates with DLSS 5.

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang described the announced system this way: “DLSS 5 is the GPT moment for graphics — blending hand-crafted rendering with generative AI to deliver a dramatic leap in visual realism while preserving the control artists need for creative expression.” This is NVIDIA’s own product characterization, not an independent image-quality test of Hogwarts Legacy. It also does not establish that DLSS 5 is available in the game or that FSR and XeSS expose an equivalent feature set.

For a fair substitute comparison, isolate the part of the experience you can actually control in the game: the upscaler, its mode, output resolution, sharpening, and the resulting frame-time behavior.

FSR and XeSS at a glance

Option Where it comes from What it does in this comparison What is established for Hogwarts Legacy What is not established
AMD FSR AMD Reconstructs an output image from a lower internal resolution through the game’s Upscale Mode. The official PC FAQ lists AMD FSR as supported. AMD’s current supported-games information lists Hogwarts Legacy for at least one FSR Redstone technology, subject to compatibility qualifications. No source supplies a universal FSR image-quality or FPS advantage over XeSS on every Radeon card.
Intel XeSS Intel Provides an alternative reconstruction path when the game exposes XeSS on the installed system. The official PC FAQ lists Intel XeSS as supported; Intel Arc users should verify that the option appears and works in their current build. No source supplies a universal XeSS advantage over FSR across Arc and Radeon hardware.
NVIDIA DLSS 5 NVIDIA Described by NVIDIA as a broader neural-rendering model using color and motion vectors for lighting and materials. The game FAQ lists NVIDIA DLSS technologies, but the available evidence does not establish DLSS 5 as a selectable feature in every Hogwarts Legacy build. It is not valid to treat the vendor’s DLSS 5 description as a like-for-like benchmark against the game’s FSR or XeSS upscalers.

The table separates confirmed game support from assumptions about implementation. A menu entry can change with a patch, driver, platform, or GPU capability, so record what your own installation presents before comparing results.

How Hogwarts Legacy’s upscaling controls work

The game’s FAQ explains that upscaling creates a high-resolution frame from a lower-resolution input. In the graphics menu, Upscale Mode controls the internal rendering resolution, while Upscale Sharpness is a separate control. Quality modes render closer to the selected output resolution and generally preserve more image detail; Performance modes lower the internal resolution to prioritize frame rate and can make edges and fine textures look softer or less stable.

Do not confuse the upscaler with every other performance switch. Shadows, population density, effects, ray-tracing options, texture quality, resolution, and other settings can change GPU time, CPU time, or VRAM use. A frame-rate difference after changing FSR to XeSS may actually come from a changed preset, a different internal resolution, shader compilation, or a scene with a different CPU workload.

Step-by-step: compare FSR and XeSS fairly

  1. Update before testing. Install the current game patch and a driver appropriate for your GPU. Write down the game version, driver version, GPU model, system memory, display resolution, and whether ray tracing is enabled.
  2. Start from a repeatable baseline. Select one graphics preset and keep it unchanged. Set the same output resolution for both tests. Do not change textures, shadows, effects, population, or ray-tracing settings between runs.
  3. Choose one upscaler. Select AMD FSR if it is available, or Intel XeSS if that is the option exposed by your installation. If an option is missing, note that fact rather than forcing a driver override and presenting it as native game support.
  4. Set the same mode. Begin with Quality for an image-quality comparison. Then test the corresponding Performance mode if you need more speed. The mode changes internal resolution, so comparing FSR Quality with XeSS Performance is not a valid technology comparison.
  5. Hold sharpness constant. Set Upscale Sharpness to the same value for both runs. A high sharpening value can make one mode appear more detailed while also exaggerating halos, ringing, or noise.
  6. Use the same route and camera movement. Walk through the same indoor and outdoor areas, rotate the camera across fine geometry, and repeat the same spell or effect if possible. Include a scene with foliage or distant architecture, where temporal instability is easier to see.
  7. Record frame rate and frame-time behavior. Use the same overlay or capture method for each run. Record average performance only alongside the scene and settings; a single number without that context is not a transferable benchmark.
  8. Inspect motion, not only screenshots. Pause for a still comparison, then watch moving hair, railings, leaves, particles, text, and distant edges. Look for ghost trails, flicker, crawling pixels, or loss of texture detail.
  9. Repeat after changing only one variable. If Performance mode is too soft, test Balanced or Quality before changing the graphics preset. If the image is overly sharp, adjust Upscale Sharpness rather than concluding that the other upscaler is inherently better.

This procedure cannot produce a universal ranking, but it gives you a defensible result for your GPU, resolution, driver, and game build.

How to judge image quality

Fine detail and texture retention

Inspect brickwork, book spines, hair, distant foliage, thin railings, and patterned fabrics. A mode that preserves a crisp still image may lose detail as soon as the camera moves. Compare the same object at the same distance and field of view.

Temporal stability

Watch thin geometry while panning. Shimmering, crawling highlights, and unstable foliage are temporal artifacts, not ordinary softness. Record a short clip if you are deciding between two modes for long play sessions; motion can reveal differences that screenshots hide.

Ghosting and disocclusion

Move past a foreground object and watch the background that becomes visible. Trails behind characters, broom movement, particles, or spell effects can indicate reconstruction problems. The game’s documentation explains the controls but does not publish a quality ranking, so these observations should remain configuration-specific.

Sharpening artifacts

Upscale Sharpness is independent of the selected upscaler. Excessive sharpening can create bright outlines around text and architecture or make noise in dark areas more obvious. Lower sharpness before rejecting a mode that otherwise retains stable detail.

Frame rate, latency, and frame generation

Upscaling reduces the internal render workload, but the resulting frame rate still depends on whether your system is GPU-limited or CPU-limited. If the GPU is near full utilization, lowering the internal resolution may produce a meaningful increase. If the CPU is already limiting the scene, switching upscalers may change little.

Keep output resolution and every non-upscaling setting fixed when measuring performance. Also compare the same route after shaders have finished compiling and background applications are closed. A traversal through a busy outdoor area can behave differently from a quiet interior, so quote the scene with any result you record.

The official FAQ mentions NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation separately from upscaling. That separate listing does not establish that frame generation is available through FSR or XeSS in your installation. Do not count generated frames as evidence that one upscaler is faster, and do not assume a frame-generation toggle will appear on an AMD or Intel system.

AMD Radeon considerations

Native FSR in the game

If AMD FSR appears in the Hogwarts Legacy graphics menu, test it through the game’s own Upscale Mode. The in-game implementation is the clearest way to compare a supported mode because it keeps the game’s motion data, resolution controls, and sharpness control in the intended path.

What AMD’s Redstone listing means

AMD’s current supported-games database lists Hogwarts Legacy for at least one FSR Redstone technology. AMD’s compatibility notes specify minimum integrated FSR versions and a driver-upgrade path for marked titles. That listing does not prove that every Redstone feature is native to every game build, nor that every Radeon card can use every listed function. Check the current game notes and the option exposed on your system before describing a driver feature as available.

ML-based FSR Upscaling requirements

AMD’s FSR technology page says its ML-based FSR Upscaling is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series, with RX 6000 support listed for 2027. This statement concerns that specific ML-based feature. It should not be read as a claim that older FSR versions are unavailable on earlier Radeon generations, or that a Redstone listing automatically enables ML-based upscaling on every card.

When an AMD driver offers an upgrade path, treat it as a separate layer from the game’s native FSR selector. Confirm the minimum integrated FSR version, supported driver, GPU requirement, and whether the game build is marked as compatible. If those conditions are not met, use the in-game option that is actually present instead of assuming a driver toggle will work.

Intel Arc considerations

Intel Arc owners should first verify that XeSS is visible in the current Hogwarts Legacy build. The official FAQ lists XeSS as supported, but its general warning about device-dependent availability still applies. An Arc GPU can meet the broad platform expectation while a particular driver or game state temporarily hides an option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare XeSS with FSR using the same Quality or Performance mode, output resolution, sharpness, and scene. Do not infer from the Arc brand alone that XeSS will always be faster or cleaner; no like-for-like source benchmark establishes that result across all Arc models and settings.

If XeSS is missing, check the game update, graphics driver, and configuration file for an accidental reset. Avoid treating an unofficial injection or a forced override as equivalent to the game’s supported XeSS path, especially when troubleshooting image artifacts or crashes.

Hardware context and the game’s recommended examples

Steam’s support listing gives NVIDIA GeForce 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, and Intel Arc A770 as examples in its recommended graphics requirements. These are requirement-list examples, not a current buying recommendation and not proof that those cards deliver the same upscaling experience. VRAM capacity, CPU performance, system memory, storage behavior, driver version, and the chosen graphics preset all affect playability.

Use the requirement information as a starting check: confirm that the operating system, processor, memory, graphics API, and storage meet the game’s stated baseline, then test your exact resolution and preset. An upscaler cannot compensate for every bottleneck. A CPU-limited open-world traversal may remain slow after internal resolution is lowered, while a GPU-limited scene may benefit substantially.

Choosing a mode for common situations

You want the cleanest image

Start with either FSR or XeSS in Quality mode at your monitor’s native output resolution. Keep sharpness moderate, walk through foliage and detailed interiors, and choose the mode with fewer moving artifacts on your screen. If both look acceptable, retain the one that delivers steadier frame times in your regular play areas.

You need more frames on a GPU-limited system

Move from Quality to Performance only after confirming that the upscaler itself is not the issue. Performance mode lowers internal resolution and can soften distant detail. Compare the resulting motion clarity and input responsiveness in the scenes where you normally fall below your target frame rate.

You are CPU-limited

Changing FSR to XeSS may have little effect. Lowering internal resolution helps the GPU, not a CPU workload caused by simulation, population, or traversal. Test a lower population or CPU-heavy setting where available, and use the upscaler mainly to control image quality rather than expecting it to solve the bottleneck.

You play at a high output resolution

At a high display resolution, Quality mode may provide a better balance than Performance because the lower internal image has more reconstruction work to do. Test the exact output resolution you use; results from 1080p cannot be assumed to describe 1440p or 4K.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are sensitive to shimmering or ghosting

Use the same route to compare motion stability, then reduce sharpness if halos are the problem. If one option produces persistent trails or flicker in the scenes you care about, select the other even if its average frame rate is similar.

Troubleshooting missing options and poor results

An upscaler does not appear

  • Confirm the game is fully patched and restart it after changing drivers.
  • Verify that the GPU is recognized correctly and that the display is connected to the intended adapter.
  • Check the graphics menu after restoring the intended preset; a device-dependent feature may be hidden when unsupported.
  • Do not claim native support from a third-party override. Record the exact option and game build instead.

The image is too soft

  • Move from Performance to Quality while keeping output resolution fixed.
  • Adjust Upscale Sharpness gradually; excessive sharpening can replace softness with halos and noise.
  • Check whether another setting, such as a lower render scale or a changed preset, was altered at the same time.

The image flickers or leaves trails

  • Repeat the test while moving the camera through the same geometry.
  • Compare the other supported upscaler at the identical mode and resolution.
  • Update the game and driver, then retest after restarting. If the artifact remains in one mode, choose the cleaner mode for your normal routes.

Changing upscalers barely changes performance

  • Check GPU utilization and frame-time behavior. A CPU limit will reduce the benefit of lower internal resolution.
  • Use a repeatable GPU-heavy scene rather than a crowded traversal segment if you are measuring the upscaler’s effect.
  • Keep ray tracing, shadows, effects, and texture settings unchanged so another bottleneck does not obscure the comparison.

What the evidence can and cannot prove

The official game FAQ establishes that FSR and XeSS are supported technologies and explains the Quality/Performance and sharpness controls. It does not publish a ranking of their image quality, a universal FPS gain, or a guarantee that every listed technology appears on every device.

AMD’s current pages establish compatibility conditions for selected Redstone and ML-based FSR features, including the RX 7000/RX 9000 availability statement and the RX 6000 support timing listed for 2027. They do not establish that every Redstone feature is native in every Hogwarts Legacy build or available on every Radeon card.

No independent, comparable figure for FSR versus XeSS in Hogwarts Legacy by GPU, resolution, game version, and settings is established here. Do not transfer a vendor-wide performance number to this game, and do not present a personal test from one configuration as a universal result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for AMD and Intel players

For an AMD Radeon system, begin with the in-game FSR option; for an Intel Arc system, begin with XeSS when it is exposed by the current build. Test both whenever both are available, but keep resolution, preset, mode, sharpness, and scene identical. Pick the mode that gives you the best combination of stable detail, acceptable artifacts, frame-time consistency, and responsiveness on your hardware.

Quality mode is the sensible first comparison, Performance mode is the speed-focused fallback, and frame generation is a separate feature rather than proof that one upscaler is superior. Treat DLSS 5’s neural-rendering description as broader than ordinary upscaling, and verify AMD’s evolving Redstone and ML-based compatibility notes before assuming a newer driver feature is active on your card.
