Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For most players, the best starting build is Saber + Pistol + Fire Transmutation. Saber gives you blocking and parrying, the Pistol covers exposed weak spots at short-to-mid range, and Fire Transmutation can ignite enemies so they become vulnerable to finishers. It is not a claim of universal best-in-slot damage: Valor Mortis’ currently documented information supports role-based builds, while no developer-verified damage model or reproducible tier list establishes one weapon combination as objectively strongest.
What makes a Valor Mortis build work
Valor Mortis is designed around changing tools during an encounter rather than committing to one damage source. Your kit combines a melee weapon, a firearm, Transmutations, Catalysts, Ambers, and weapon upgrade trees. Parrying and weak-spot attacks help manage Nephtoglobin, the resource used for powers. Successful posture damage creates a finisher window, so the strongest rotation is usually the one that reaches a safe posture break while preserving enough stamina, ammunition, and Nephtoglobin to exploit it.

The combat rule is simple but important: parry attacks that can be parried and dodge attacks that are unblockable. A firearm is an accent to that loop, not a replacement for it. The official gameplay documentation describes scarce pistol ammunition and calls the gun a “punctuating tool, not a primary hose.” That limitation should shape every ranged or hybrid build.
Official material describes three melee options, three guns, and three powers as the broad equipment system. The weapons documentation currently names four weapons—Rapier, Saber, Musket, and Pistol—so the practical recommendations below use those named weapons and treat future balance or roster changes as possible. The Steam announcement also confirms that swords, firearms, and magic can be dual-wielded and leveled.

Quick build recommendations
| Playstyle | Weapons and power | Primary job | Why choose it | Main cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forgiving melee | Saber + encounter-appropriate Transmutation | Block, parry, build posture, finish | Supports blocking and parrying; a melee hit after blocking can restore the health spent on blocking | Close-range exposure, stamina management |
| Precision melee | Rapier + encounter-appropriate Transmutation | Weak spots and fast parries | Faster attacks, strong weak-spot pressure, and stronger parry interaction | Cannot block properly; demands precise dodges |
| Long-range control | Musket + Saber or Rapier | Single-target shots before melee engagement | Best documented long-range single-target role | Limited ammunition and a mandatory melee fallback |
| Ranged support | Pistol + Saber or Rapier | Weak spots and short-range interrupts | Fits naturally into a melee rotation | Scarce ammunition and competition for the left-hand slot |
| Accessible hybrid | Saber + Pistol + Fire Transmutation | Parry, weak spot, ignite, finish | Every tool has a distinct job and the setup forgives mistakes | Must track stamina, ammunition, and Nephtoglobin together |
| Precision hybrid | Rapier + Musket + utility Transmutation | Open at range, then pressure weak spots and posture | Excellent reach and precision for confident players | Higher execution burden and no dependable block |
How the combat loop determines your build
Posture and finishers
Posture breaks are the central payoff for defensive and offensive decisions. Parries, sustained melee pressure, and attacks on weak spots help create the opening; the finisher then converts that opening into meaningful damage. A build that produces large numbers on paper but cannot keep you in finisher range is less useful than one that reliably creates and reaches those windows.
Parry, block, and dodge
Saber is the defensive baseline because it supports both blocking and parrying. Blocking is not free: it spends health, but a melee hit after a block can recover the health that blocking consumed. Rapier is a different commitment. It is faster and has stronger parry interaction, yet it cannot block properly, so dodging is your answer to attacks that cannot be parried.
Weak spots and Nephtoglobin
Weak-spot hits do double duty. They pressure the enemy and help refill Nephtoglobin, letting you use a Transmutation without exhausting your resource economy. Spend Nephtoglobin when the power creates a real opening, then return to weak-spot or melee pressure before the next cast. Firing randomly at armored or unexposed targets wastes both ammunition and an opportunity to restore your power resource.
Why firearms do not replace swords
Musket and Pistol ammunition is scarce. Firearms therefore work best as deliberate answers: a Musket shot to begin a dangerous single-target encounter, or a Pistol shot when a weak spot is exposed inside a melee exchange. Once the enemy closes distance, your melee weapon must handle posture, parries, and finishers.
Best melee build: Saber parry and sustain
Core loadout
- Weapon: Saber.
- Power: Choose the Transmutation that best supports the encounter; the documented system offers three powers, but no universal ranking or damage values are established.
- Upgrade direction: Favor health, stamina, parry reliability, posture damage, and access to finishers when choosing among available Catalysts, Ambers, and weapon-tree nodes.
Combat procedure
- Stay close enough to read the enemy’s attack rather than chasing with uncontrolled swings.
- Block attacks when you need a forgiving defensive answer, then land the post-block melee hit to recover the health that blocking spent.
- Parry attacks that are parryable. A successful parry contributes to posture pressure and helps you reach a finisher window.
- Dodge attacks marked or behaving as unblockable instead of trying to absorb them.
- Use weak-spot hits whenever the target exposes one, both for damage and to help refill Nephtoglobin.
- When posture breaks, remain in finisher range and execute before returning to neutral spacing.
- Spend your Transmutation during a confirmed opening or when its effect directly improves your chance of a posture break; do not drain Nephtoglobin at the start of every encounter.
Why this is the best first melee build
Saber gives new players two defensive answers while they learn enemy timing. Blocking covers mistakes, parrying rewards pattern recognition, and the post-block health recovery reduces the long-term cost of defensive play. It does not remove the need to dodge or manage stamina, but it gives you a stable baseline for learning enemy moves before experimenting with more specialized weapons.
When to move away from Saber
Choose another setup when you consistently avoid blocking, prefer aggressive weak-spot attacks, or need more long-range control. Saber’s value is forgiveness and sustain, not a documented highest damage ceiling.

Alternative melee build: Rapier weak-spot pressure
Core loadout
- Weapon: Rapier.
- Power: A Transmutation that complements the enemy type or arena.
- Upgrade direction: Prioritize attack speed, weak-spot access, parry impact, stamina, and resource recovery instead of building around conventional blocking.
Combat procedure
- Approach with an exit route in mind; Rapier cannot provide a dependable block.
- Use its speed to reach exposed weak spots before the opening closes.
- Parry attacks that can be parried to accelerate posture pressure.
- Dodge unblockables and any attack whose timing you have not learned; do not stand in front of it expecting Saber-like protection.
- Convert the resulting posture break into a finisher, then use recovered Nephtoglobin for the power that best fits the next exchange.
Who should choose Rapier
Rapier suits players who want precision, fast attacks, and an aggressive parry game. It can produce a more active rhythm than Saber, but the cost is a higher execution requirement. If missed dodges or greedy attacks are regularly ending attempts, switching to Saber is a practical correction rather than a downgrade.
Best ranged build: Musket single-target control
Core loadout
- Firearm: Musket.
- Melee fallback: Saber for defensive stability or Rapier for precision.
- Power and upgrades: Use a Transmutation suited to the encounter, and spend Catalysts, Ambers, and weapon-tree choices on enough health and stamina to survive the moment an enemy reaches you.
Combat procedure
- Start outside the enemy’s preferred range and identify the priority target.
- Use the Musket for deliberate single-target shots, especially against an exposed weak spot or a dangerous enemy you want to soften before contact.
- Stop shooting when the target closes or the shot is unlikely to hit a meaningful target; ammunition is scarce.
- Swap to your melee weapon before you are trapped in a reload or recovery animation.
- Use parries, dodges, weak-spot hits, and finishers to complete the encounter without spending every round.
Choosing the melee partner
Saber is the safer partner for players who are still learning to maintain distance. Rapier keeps the build’s precision identity and offers faster weak-spot pressure, but it leaves less room for errors because it cannot block properly. In either case, the Musket is an opener and control tool, not an excuse to ignore melee fundamentals.
Ranged support build: Pistol weak-spot rotation
Core loadout
- Firearm: Pistol.
- Melee partner: Saber for a defensive rotation or Rapier for aggressive weak-spot pressure.
- Power: Offensive or utility Transmutation chosen around the encounter’s openings.
Combat procedure
- Fight primarily with the sword and watch for a weak spot to open.
- Draw the Pistol only when a shot has a clear purpose: weak-spot damage, a short-range interrupt, or pressure on a target that is momentarily outside melee reach.
- Return immediately to sword pressure so posture damage and finisher access do not stall.
- Reserve ammunition for dangerous or resistant targets rather than spending it on routine shots.
- Use weak-spot and melee pressure to rebuild Nephtoglobin before the next Transmutation.
Pistol is the better firearm for players who want ranged utility without giving up close combat. Its short-range role means it does not replace the Musket’s deliberate distance control, and its ammunition still competes with every other resource in the fight.
Best accessible hybrid: Saber, Pistol, and Fire Transmutation
Why this combination works
This is the strongest general recommendation for a first run or an unknown encounter. Saber handles blocking and parrying, Pistol reaches weak spots during brief openings, and Fire Transmutation adds a distinct elemental condition. The documented Fire Transmutation sets enemies alight, and burning enemies are open to finishers. That gives the build two ways to create a conversion point: posture pressure from the sword and a burn-created finisher opportunity.
Recommended rotation
- Read the attack: Use Saber to block when a forgiving defense is needed, parry when the timing is clear, and dodge attacks that cannot be parried.
- Probe the weak spot: Fire the Pistol only when the weak spot is exposed or the shot has a clear interrupting purpose.
- Ignite deliberately: Trigger Fire Transmutation when Nephtoglobin is available and the enemy can be pressured during the burning window.
- Close for the payoff: Stay within finisher range after posture breaks or when burning opens the target.
- Rebuild resources: Return to melee and weak-spot pressure before spending another power or round.
Trade-offs
The setup asks you to monitor three limited resources—stamina, ammunition, and Nephtoglobin—but each tool has a clear job. It is forgiving enough for learners and flexible enough to remain useful when enemy range or elemental opportunities change.

Precision hybrid: Rapier, Musket, and utility Transmutation
Core loadout
Use Rapier for fast weak-spot and parry pressure, Musket for long-range single targets, and a Transmutation selected for the area or enemy type. This is the hybrid for players who prefer spacing and precision over block-based safety.

Recommended rotation
- Open at range against a priority target with a carefully chosen Musket shot.
- Switch to Rapier as the enemy enters melee rather than trying to force another ranged shot.
- Attack exposed weak spots and parry appropriate attacks to build posture.
- Dodge unblockables; Rapier cannot supply a reliable block.
- Spend Nephtoglobin during the posture or weak-spot opening, then execute the finisher.
This setup has strong reach and precision but a narrower margin for error. It is a good second build after you understand enemy timings, not the safest blind recommendation.
Weapon and role comparison
| Axis | Saber melee | Rapier melee | Musket ranged | Pistol hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Defense | Blocking and parrying supported | Parry-focused; cannot block properly | Depends on melee fallback | Depends on paired melee weapon |
| Best range | Close | Close | Long | Short to mid |
| Main target | Sustained melee and posture | Weak spots and fast parries | Single targets at distance | Weak spots during melee flow |
| Resource pressure | Stamina and health spent on blocks | Stamina and dodge timing | Ammunition plus melee fallback | Scarce ammunition plus left-hand choice |
| Learning curve | Most forgiving | Higher precision demand | Spacing and swap discipline | Rotation and ammunition discipline |
How to spend upgrades without a verified tier list
No developer-published damage figures, scaling tables, or reproducible win-rate tests establish a universal upgrade order. Use the following role-based priorities instead of chasing an unsupported numerical ranking.
For Saber
- Take health and stamina improvements that let you block, reposition, and remain in finisher range.
- Favor parry and posture tools when they are available in the weapon tree.
- Choose Catalysts or Ambers that reduce the cost of mistakes before pursuing narrow damage gains.
For Rapier
- Favor speed, weak-spot access, parry impact, and stamina.
- Value mobility and recovery because dodging replaces conventional blocking.
- Do not select defensive options that assume you can absorb attacks through a block.
For Musket
- Invest in survivability and stamina for the inevitable close-range phase.
- Improve the parts of the tree that make deliberate shots count against priority targets when such options are available.
- Keep a melee fallback upgraded enough to finish targets after ammunition is conserved.
For Pistol and hybrids
- Prioritize weak-spot access, swap discipline, and enough stamina to return safely to melee.
- Choose Transmutation support that creates a confirmed opening instead of spending Nephtoglobin on low-probability damage.
- Do not build around unlimited ammunition; the official combat description explicitly characterizes ammunition as scarce.
Choosing a build by player preference
If you are learning enemy patterns
Start with Saber. Blocking supplies a forgiving answer while parrying teaches the timing that every later build still needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you enjoy perfect timing and aggressive attacks
Choose Rapier. Its speed, weak-spot strength, and parry interaction reward precision, but commit to dodging attacks that cannot be parried.
If you prefer to control distance
Choose Musket with a melee weapon you can use confidently. Treat every shot as a planned action and preserve ammunition for dangerous targets.
If you want ranged utility without abandoning melee
Choose Pistol with Saber or Rapier. Fire only during meaningful openings, then return to sword pressure.

Common mistakes and corrections
Trying to play firearms as a primary weapon
Symptom: ammunition disappears before the encounter is decided.
Correction: Reserve Musket and Pistol shots for exposed weak spots, priority targets, or deliberate interrupts. Return to melee when the target closes.
Blocking with Rapier
Symptom: attacks that Saber would absorb continue to punish you.
Correction: Treat Rapier as a parry-and-dodge weapon. If you want a block-based safety net, switch to Saber.
Recommended Free Tools
Dodging every attack and never parrying
Symptom: you survive but rarely create posture breaks or finishers.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Correction: Practice parrying attacks that can be parried, and reserve dodges for unblockables or timings you have not learned.
Spending Nephtoglobin on cooldown
Symptom: the next meaningful opening arrives with no power resource.
Correction: Use weak-spot hits and melee pressure to recover Nephtoglobin, then spend it when a Transmutation will create or exploit a real opening.
Leaving finisher range
Symptom: posture breaks occur, but the enemy recovers before the finisher lands.
Correction: Fight with a route back to the target. After pressure builds, stay close enough to execute instead of retreating automatically.
Building for an unverified damage ranking
Symptom: a supposed tier-list choice performs poorly after a balance change or in a different encounter.
Correction: Build around the job you need—defense, weak spots, spacing, posture, or resource economy. Current public information does not establish a developer-verified best-in-slot order.
Launch and availability context
The official Steam announcement lists Valor Mortis launching on October 13, 2026, at $39.99, €39.99, and 149.99 zł. Those are the announcement’s regional launch prices, not a promise that every storefront, tax treatment, discount, or later price will match. The same announcement describes leveling swords, firearms, and magic, which is why a build should be treated as an upgrade path rather than a fixed three-item loadout.
Final recommendation
Use Saber + Pistol + Fire Transmutation as the default hybrid: parry and block to build posture, shoot exposed weak spots, ignite when Nephtoglobin can support the opening, and stay in range for the finisher. Move to Rapier when you want faster weak-spot pressure and can replace blocking with reliable dodges. Move to Musket when deliberate long-range single-target control matters more than ammunition economy. These are role-based recommendations grounded in the documented combat rules; balance patches, upgrade values, and later community testing may change the relative strength of each option.
