Start with Target Lock on, Combat Assist at Moderate (raise it if swings regularly miss), Instant Restart on, Quick Cast on, default FOV, low camera shake, a visible HUD and crosshair, and clear enemy and sound-effects audio. That profile makes attacks easier to see, keeps your aim from fighting the camera, and shortens the time between failed attempts. It does not make a boss attack slower or extend a parry window; it gives you cleaner visual, audio and frame-time information so your existing timing is more consistent.
Use the profile below for your first several attempts, then change one setting at a time according to the problem you can identify: losing the boss off-screen, melee swings drifting past the target, missing an audio cue, or suffering uneven frame pacing.

Recommended starting profile
| Setting | Starting value | Why it helps with telegraphs | Change it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target Lock | On | In first person, the camera stays attached to the active enemy, reducing camera-fighting while you learn its attacks. | Turn it off only when you can keep the boss centered manually and lock-on is pulling your view away from a planned line. |
| Combat Assist | Moderate; High if attacks whiff | Snaps melee swings toward the locked target, reducing aim error while you concentrate on timing. | Lower it if the camera or attack path is being pulled away from the enemy or from a deliberate angle. |
| Instant Restart | On | Skips the death screen and returns you to the checkpoint, giving you more repetitions per minute. | Leave it on during practice; disable it only if you need to review a death screen or checkpoint state. |
| Quick Cast | On for pressure situations | Removes a confirmation step when casting Transmutations, useful when a defensive or elemental response must happen immediately. | Turn it off if accidental casts are costing resources during calm observation. |
| Base FOV | Default initially | Large bosses already use dynamic FOV scaling. The default avoids adding edge distortion before you understand that behavior. | Revisit it after several large-boss attempts if the arena still feels cramped or the target repeatedly leaves the edges of your view. |
| Camera shake | Low | Reduces visual movement that can hide a wind-up or make motion uncomfortable. | Keep it higher only if you can clearly read impact feedback and prefer the extra spectacle. |
| HUD and crosshair | Visible | Preserves targeting and status information while you learn spacing and attack families. | Hide elements after the encounter is familiar and you no longer need their information. |
| Subtitles | As needed for dialogue | Larger text improves dialogue readability without changing combat timing. | Increase size for accessibility; it has no advantage for visual attack cues. |
| Enemy and sound-effects volume | High enough to hear clearly | Preserves metallic parry sounds and enemy movement or impact cues. | Rebalance ambience or music downward if they mask those channels. |
This is a learning profile, not a claim that one arrangement is universally optimal. Compare any alternative by five practical measures: whether the camera stays stable, whether attacks track the intended target, whether frame time remains consistent, whether audio cues are distinct, and how quickly you can retry.
What a boss telegraph actually tells you
Valor Mortis separates posture damage, parries and dodges rather than allowing one defensive input to solve every attack. Official launch guidance states that posture is broken through hits and parries. A clean parry produces a metallic clang and sets up a counter-attack; a perfect dodge creates a short slow-motion moment. Those are confirmation signals, not extra time granted by the settings menu.

Parry only when the attack is suitable
Attacks cannot be canceled into a parry. As Connor Bridgeman, Lyrical Games’ director of marketing, explains: “You can’t cancel an attack animation into a parry, so never start a swing you can’t finish.” Begin an offensive animation only when you have enough time to complete it. If an incoming move is parryable, commit to the parry timing instead of mashing through an attack.
Use the dodge cue for attacks you should not parry
Unblockable or otherwise unsuitable attacks call for a dodge. A brief slow-motion moment on a perfect dodge confirms that you read the move correctly. Do not interpret that effect as evidence that the game has enlarged your reaction window; it is feedback after the successful input.
Listen for confirmation
The metallic clang is the clean-parry confirmation. If you cannot hear it, raise enemy and sound-effects channels and reduce competing ambience before changing your build. A setting can make a cue easier to perceive, but no cited evidence shows that any setting lengthens a parry window.

Camera, lock-on and melee tracking
Why Target Lock is the best first setting
In first person, an unlocked camera can drift while you turn, attack or react to a boss crossing your path. Target Lock keeps the view attached to the active enemy, reducing the camera-fighting that often makes a familiar wind-up look inconsistent. It is especially useful while you are identifying an attack family and learning the distance at which it begins.
Lock-on is not a substitute for positioning. The boss can still move, your view can still be obstructed, and an arena may contain more than one threat. If the lock pulls your view away from a hazard, an intended flank or a weak point, release it for that sequence and restore it once the camera is under control.
How to tune Combat Assist
Combat Assist changes aim forgiveness, not encounter timing. Moderate is a sensible baseline: it gives melee swings some target correction while preserving enough manual control to choose your line. Raise it to High if attacks consistently whiff despite correct distance and a stable lock. Lower it if the snap turns you away from the intended line, a weak point or another enemy you deliberately selected.

| Observed problem | Adjustment | What to watch for on the next attempt |
|---|---|---|
| Your swing passes beside a locked boss. | Raise Combat Assist one step. | Whether the hit connects without the camera overshooting. |
| Your swing is pulled toward the wrong side of the target. | Lower Combat Assist or release lock briefly. | Whether you regain control of the attack line. |
| You lose the boss while turning to react. | Keep Target Lock on and reduce camera shake. | Whether the wind-up remains visible through the turn. |
| You can track the boss but dislike automatic steering. | Keep Target Lock on, set Combat Assist lower. | Whether the stable camera is enough without heavy aim correction. |
FOV and large bosses
Leave base FOV at its default while learning. Valor Mortis applies dynamic FOV scaling for large bosses, so widening the base value immediately can create edge distortion or make the target appear farther away than your muscle memory expects. After several attempts, change FOV only if you can describe a specific problem—such as repeatedly losing the boss at the edge of the screen—then test the new value for a complete attempt before changing anything else.

Set camera shake to Low when a wind-up is hard to track or motion is uncomfortable. Keep the HUD and crosshair visible during the learning phase; the available controls include HUD scale, crosshair and Show UI options. Increase subtitle size only to improve dialogue readability. Subtitles do not replace combat audio, and hiding the HUD does not improve a parry window.
Audio settings that preserve attack cues
Use separate enemy, sound-effects and ambience controls to create headroom for the information that matters. Keep enemy and sound-effects channels high enough to hear movement, impacts and the metallic clang of a clean parry. If ambience or music masks those sounds, lower those channels rather than raising every slider, which can cause fatigue and make individual cues harder to distinguish.

Practice identifying the cue before you react to the result. A clang confirms a successful parry; it is not the sound to wait for before pressing the button. Press on the visual timing of the attack, then use the sound to verify whether your timing was correct.
Graphics and latency: favor consistency over peaks
Choose a stable frame-rate target
Use the highest frame-rate target your hardware can hold without deep drops. A steady 60 frames per second is more useful for reaction timing than a higher average interrupted by severe dips. Cap the frame rate when necessary; an unstable peak can make the same wind-up appear to have different pacing from attempt to attempt.

- Check that your display is running at its intended refresh rate and that the game is not oscillating between frame-rate targets.
- If performance dips, lower ray tracing first.
- Lower shadows next if frame time is still uneven.
- Apply a frame-rate cap that your system can sustain in the busiest arena rather than the menu or an empty corridor.
- Retest a complete boss attempt, because a counter that looks stable outside combat may still dip during effects-heavy attacks.

Update drivers before diagnosing the game
One More Level’s Oct. 16, 2026 patch notes identify outdated GPU drivers as an area associated with significant performance and stability improvements. The same notes list crash fixes and a Chapter 4 post-boss save-progression fix. Update the driver recommended for your GPU, apply the game patch, then retest before changing several graphics options at once. If a crash or progression problem remains, record the chapter, boss and point at which it occurs so you can distinguish a performance issue from a save-state issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controller versus mouse and keyboard
The settings guide describes a high simultaneous-input load: first-person camera control, lock-on management, parry timing and left-hand Transmutations all compete for attention. It recommends a controller while acknowledging that mouse and keyboard remain playable. TechRadar’s reviewer used an Xbox Wireless Controller during more than 10 hours of PC play, so that device type is a reasonable starting point if your priority is steadier camera and parry input.
| Control method | Strength for telegraph reading | Possible drawback | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controller | Analog camera movement and grouped combat inputs can reduce abrupt view changes during a parry. | Fine camera aiming and rapid menu or inventory navigation may feel slower. | You are losing attacks while turning, or several combat inputs are competing for adjacent keyboard keys. |
| Mouse and keyboard | Fast, precise camera movement and easy access to many individually mapped actions. | Rapid camera corrections can be abrupt; reaching parry and left-hand Transmutations together may require more finger travel. | You already control first-person mouse movement reliably and can reach defensive inputs without releasing movement. |
Do not switch control methods in the middle of a timing experiment. Use one method for several attempts, then compare the same attack family under the same Target Lock, FOV, frame-rate and audio conditions. Otherwise you will be measuring multiple changes at once.
A repeatable boss-learning loop
- Prepare before entering. Enable Target Lock, Instant Restart and your chosen Combat Assist level. Turn on Quick Cast if you expect to use a Transmutation under pressure. Set camera shake low, leave FOV at default, keep HUD and crosshair visible, and verify that enemy and sound-effects channels are audible.
- Watch one attack family. For the first life, observe the wind-up, distance and recovery of one recognizable move instead of trying to memorize the entire encounter. Do not start an attack that cannot be canceled into a parry.
- Reserve stamina for the response. Decide whether the move calls for a parry, a block or counter, or a dodge. Avoid mashing attacks that leave no stamina or animation time for that response.
- Confirm the result. Use the metallic clang to verify a clean parry or the brief slow-motion effect to verify a perfect dodge. If the cue is unclear, change audio or camera settings before changing your build.
- Exploit the boss-specific opening. Use weak-point firearm shots and Transmutations when the encounter design calls for them. Official guidance says weak-point hits refill Nephtoglobin and that each major boss rewards a different strategy; do not assume the same attack sequence is optimal for every boss.
- Restart immediately. Instant Restart shortens the gap between attempts, allowing you to test one hypothesis repeatedly instead of spending most of the session in menus.
- Change one variable. If the read still feels inconsistent, check frame pacing, camera shake, FOV and audio in that order. Adjust only one setting, then repeat the same attack-family test.
Fixes for common reading problems
“I see the wind-up, but the boss leaves the screen.”
- Confirm Target Lock is on.
- Lower camera shake.
- Return FOV to default if you widened it before learning the game’s dynamic scaling.
- Check that frame time is stable during the boss’s effects-heavy moves.
“My parry timing feels random.”
- Stop changing builds and test one attack family.
- Make sure the frame rate is capped at a stable target rather than fluctuating.
- Raise enemy and sound-effects volume and reduce ambience.
- Remember that settings improve information and input consistency; they do not lengthen the parry window.
“My melee attacks miss even when I am close.”
- Set Combat Assist to Moderate, then High if the misses continue.
- Keep Target Lock on while testing.
- If High pulls attacks away from a weak point or intended line, step back to Moderate or lower.
“Quick Cast causes mistakes.”
Quick Cast is valuable when a defensive or elemental Transmutation must come out immediately, but it removes a confirmation step. If accidental casts are wasting resources during observation, turn it off for that practice phase and re-enable it for pressure attempts.
“The game stutters or crashes during a boss.”
- Update the GPU driver and the game, as the Oct. 16, 2026 patch specifically cites outdated drivers among the largest performance and stability improvements.
- Lower ray tracing, then shadows.
- Cap the frame rate at a level your system holds in combat.
- If the failure occurs after a Chapter 4 boss, check whether the patch’s post-boss save-progression fix applies before repeating the encounter.
Profiles for different players
| Player situation | Target Lock | Combat Assist | Other changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learning a boss for the first time | On | Moderate | Default FOV, low shake, visible HUD, clear enemy audio, Instant Restart on. |
| Melee swings regularly miss | On | High | Keep the camera stable; lower Assist again if it redirects attacks from weak points. |
| Experienced player who wants manual lines | On or off according to arena | Low or off | Preserve the frame-rate cap and audio profile while testing manual control. |
| Motion-sensitive player | On | Moderate | Camera shake Low, default FOV, and a stable frame-rate target. |
| Controller learner | On | Moderate | Use analog camera control and keep Quick Cast available for urgent Transmutations. |
| Mouse-and-keyboard specialist | On initially | Low to Moderate | Keep the crosshair visible until camera corrections and parry inputs are reliable. |
What these settings cannot do
No cited source demonstrates that Target Lock, Combat Assist, FOV, camera shake, audio, graphics quality or controller choice changes an enemy’s attack timing or creates a longer parry window. Their benefit is practical: a steadier camera, more forgiving aim, clearer cues, fewer frame-time surprises and faster retries. The skill check remains the same—recognize the wind-up, choose parry, block/counter or dodge, and commit to an input that the current animation can actually perform.
