For most survival worlds, build an iron-golem farm first, then a general hostile-mob farm. The iron farm supplies the rails, hoppers, tools and trading infrastructure that make every later project easier. A general dark-room farm adds mixed drops and experience. Specialize in creepers when gunpowder is your limiting resource; leave guardian and raid farms for the point at which you can afford large, edition-specific construction projects.

“Still works in 2026” does not mean that an old schematic is guaranteed forever. It means the underlying mechanics are present in your exact Java or Bedrock release and that the design has been checked for that release, simulation distance and location. Java and Bedrock use different village, spawning and raid rules, so a farm that works in one edition can fail completely in the other.

What makes a mob farm worth building in 2026?

A mob farm is a structure that concentrates spawning, moves mobs to one place, kills them and collects their drops. The Minecraft Wiki describes the core as a dark spawning area, transport, a grinder, collection and a position where the player waits. That pattern applies to nearly every farm in this guide, from a simple fall-damage tower to an ocean-monument guardian project.

Judge a design by the resource it produces rather than by a headline production number. No independently verified items-per-hour figure is established here; rates vary with edition, release, simulation distance, the exact AFK position, spawn-proofing and the test method. A design with a lower theoretical rate can be the better farm if it is safer, cheaper or easier to keep loaded.

  • Location: oceans, monuments, villages and chunk geometry can determine whether the farm works at all.
  • Spawn competition: every legal dark space near the player can divert hostile spawns away from the farm.
  • Player interaction: some grinders kill automatically; others require the player to deliver the final hit for experience or certain drops.
  • Maintenance: water channels, villager arrangements, raid holding cells and guardian-kill chambers can need periodic attention.
  • Lag and safety: a high-output farm is not useful if entities accumulate, chunks unload or the kill chamber threatens the player.

Build the simplest farm that solves your immediate bottleneck. A well-spawn-proofed general farm is a flexible baseline; a specialized farm is justified when one item is holding back your projects.

Quick comparison of the five practical choices

Farm Main output Best point in progression Location and construction burden Edition warning Player final hit?
Iron golem Iron and poppies Early to mid-game infrastructure Village-based; modest footprint, but villager handling is critical Java and Bedrock village requirements differ Depends on the kill design; experience is not the reason to build it
General hostile mob Mixed hostile drops and XP Early to mid-game, after basic safety gear Dark spawning area, transport, grinder and collection; spawn-proofing is the major labor Check spawning rules and the exact release Choose automatic killing or a manual finishing chamber
Creeper Gunpowder When rockets or TNT become the bottleneck Ocean placement reduces competing spaces; filtering details are design-specific Trapdoor, height and spider-filter behavior must match the edition Design-dependent
Guardian Guardian drops and XP Endgame, when a monument project is justified Flooded spawning area, transport, kill area and collection around an ocean monument Verify the exact 2026 design and water mechanics Design-dependent; guardian thorns affect some kill methods
Raid Emeralds and other raid loot Advanced trading and late-game projects Raid trigger, holding area and killing system; some Java designs need precise chunk and ocean geometry Java and Bedrock behavior diverges sharply Design-dependent

Fall-damage grinders and spawner traps are not separate mob types, but they are useful construction patterns. Most common hostile mobs can be killed by a 24-block fall; witches need about 30 blocks. Use those figures as a starting comparison, then check the mob’s health, armor, drops and whether a player must finish the kill.

1. Iron-golem farm: the best first investment

Why it comes first

Iron-golem farming uses village mechanics to produce iron and poppies. Iron feeds rails, hoppers, anvils, buckets, shields, tools and many redstone builds, so the output improves nearly every later project. The Java tutorial for this farm states that production can continue indefinitely while the relevant chunks are loaded without requiring the player to remain present. That makes iron automation unusually valuable as infrastructure rather than as a one-purpose loot farm.

How the farm works

Villagers create the conditions for an iron golem to spawn. The build then places the golem in a controlled area, moves it into a killing chamber and collects iron and poppies. The exact villager count, beds, workstations, panic or gossip conditions and spacing depend on the edition and the design. Treat those details as a matched package: do not substitute a Java villager arrangement into a Bedrock tutorial or assume that a Bedrock village behaves like a Java village.

Build checklist

  1. Confirm the edition and 2026 release shown by the tutorial you intend to follow.
  2. Choose a location away from other beds, workstations and village points of interest unless the design explicitly incorporates them.
  3. Transport villagers safely and lock them into the required beds and workstations.
  4. Build the spawning platform and water or other transport that sends golems to the kill chamber.
  5. Install collection below the kill point, with enough storage for iron and poppies.
  6. Load the chunk and watch several spawn cycles before enclosing the mechanism permanently.

Common failures

  • No golems: villagers may not be linked to the required beds or workstations, or another village component may be interfering.
  • Golems spawn outside: spawn-proof nearby solid surfaces and inspect caves, roofs and adjacent platforms.
  • Villagers lose their links: accidental bed or workstation access can change the village state; rebuild the assignment area according to the design.
  • Collection backs up: add storage before the kill chamber fills and entities begin causing lag.

Build the Java and Bedrock versions as separate projects. A familiar-looking layout is not evidence that its village logic is interchangeable.

2. General hostile-mob farm: the flexible XP and drops baseline

Core layout

A general farm encloses a dark spawning area, uses water or another mechanism to move mobs, brings them to a grinder and collects the results. The player waits at a calculated position so the farm’s spawning spaces are active while unwanted spaces are outside the relevant range or have been spawn-proofed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hostile-mob caps and the number of competing spawn spaces make location decisive. A surface farm is weaker at night because dark terrain around it competes for the same spawns. Building over an ocean, high above terrain or in another location with fewer legal spaces can reduce that competition, but the correct AFK geometry still depends on the design and edition.

Choosing automatic or manual killing

  • Automatic kill: simple to operate and suitable for bulk drops, but it may not provide the experience or player-kill-dependent drops you want.
  • Manual finishing chamber: leaves mobs at one-hit health so the player can deliver the final blow, collect XP and use a weapon with the desired enchantments.
  • Fall damage: most common hostile mobs can be killed by a 24-block drop; witches require about 30 blocks. Confirm the exact health and armor state before fixing the height.

Build sequence

  1. Pick a location with as few nearby dark caves and surfaces as practical.
  2. Construct the spawning floors with the light level, roof and spacing specified by the current tutorial.
  3. Add water streams, flushing cycles or another transport method that moves mobs consistently.
  4. Build the fall, crushing, campfire or manual finishing chamber and test it with a small number of mobs.
  5. Install hoppers and storage where items cannot be destroyed by the killing method.
  6. Stand at the design’s AFK position and inspect rates, entity buildup and safety before leaving the area unattended.

Spawn-proofing is the real project

Lighting nearby caves and surfaces, placing blocks that prevent spawning and clearing dark water or overhangs often takes longer than the tower itself. If the farm is slow, inspect the surrounding sphere of possible spawn spaces before changing the grinder. A faster kill chamber cannot compensate for mobs spawning elsewhere.

3. Creeper farm: specialize when gunpowder is the constraint

Why use a dedicated design?

A creeper farm narrows the general hostile-mob pattern to produce gunpowder for rockets, TNT and other recipes. The cited tutorial recommends an ocean location because open water reduces competing spawn spaces. It also describes an AFK platform positioned relative to ocean level rather than simply telling you to stand anywhere above the farm.

Filtering details that matter

Creeper farms commonly use trapdoors and height-based filtering to make the spawning floors favorable to creepers. Some designs also spawn spiders; a spider can block a floor, jam transport or alter the farm’s output. The exact trapdoor arrangement, ceiling height and spider prevention must be checked against the edition and release. Copying a Java floor into Bedrock, or copying an older release’s dimensions into a newer one, can produce a mixed-mob farm or no useful output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Construction and troubleshooting

  1. Use an ocean location only if the selected design is written for that setting and gives a safe AFK height.
  2. Build the spawning floors, trapdoors and ceilings exactly as a matched set.
  3. Add the cat, water or other mob-routing mechanism specified by the design; do not assume that a different scare or transport method has the same behavior.
  4. Run the farm in daylight and at night while observing whether spiders or other mobs are entering the system.
  5. Spawn-proof the accessible shoreline, nearby islands and any exposed caves that remain inside the relevant range.
  6. Protect the collection from creeper explosions and provide enough storage for long sessions.

If output is mixed, first inspect the floor dimensions and trapdoor pattern. If output is low, check ocean-level AFK distance and competing dark spaces before rebuilding the kill chamber.

4. Guardian farm: high return, high commitment

What the project contains

A basic guardian farm consists of a flooded spawning area, a killing area, a transport system, item collection and a place for the player to wait. In practice, that means working around an ocean monument, controlling large volumes of water and making sure guardians arrive at the kill point without escaping.

Why it belongs in the endgame

The monument and its surrounding water are the farm’s defining constraints. Draining or redirecting water, enclosing spawning spaces and building safe access can consume more materials and time than the collection system. Guardians also have thorns, so some iron-golem kill designs are maintenance-heavy: the golems can take damage while attacking and may need replacement or a different killing method.

Planning checklist

  • Verify the monument location and the exact design’s required boundaries.
  • Decide whether the design uses monument geometry, a drained area or a separate spawning structure.
  • Plan water removal, temporary blocks, lighting and safe routes before starting the permanent chamber.
  • Choose a kill method that accounts for guardian thorns and the desired XP behavior.
  • Build collection with enough storage for a long session and a way to clear overflow.
  • Test the waiting position and transport while the monument remains accessible for repairs.

Build this farm when prismarine-related materials, guardian drops or large quantities of XP justify the construction, not merely because it has a higher theoretical ceiling than a general farm.

5. Raid farm: powerful but version-specific engineering

How raids are farmed

A raid farm creates or uses a village so a raid can start, then moves raid mobs into a holding or killing area. The cited tutorial records emeralds and other raid loot, but also warns that Java and Bedrock behavior diverges. A working design therefore depends on the exact edition, release and village arrangement rather than on a generic “raid farm” shape.

Why Java builds can be unusually precise

Advanced Java designs may depend on chunk coordinates, player rotation and an ocean location several chunks from land. Those requirements are not cosmetic. A slight relocation, a changed viewing direction or nearby terrain can alter where raid mobs search for valid positions. Treat the tutorial’s coordinates and orientation as functional specifications.

Safe build process

  1. Record the edition, release and tutorial version before gathering materials.
  2. Choose the required ocean or other location and map nearby land, villages and spawnable surfaces.
  3. Construct the village trigger and holding cells exactly as specified.
  4. Test one raid with a safe escape route and backup storage before enabling repeated cycles.
  5. Confirm that raid mobs are transported to the intended kill point and that no wave can reach the player unexpectedly.
  6. Only then add long-term storage, trading links or an AFK platform.

If a raid does not start, check village linking and the trigger conditions. If mobs appear outside the chamber, inspect nearby terrain and the design’s chunk or rotation requirements before changing the kill mechanism.

Java versus Bedrock: how to avoid copying the wrong farm

Edition labels are part of the farm’s specification, not an optional note. Iron farms use different village requirements. Raid behavior diverges. Creeper filtering and hostile-spawn details can vary. A schematic that looks identical may rely on mechanics unavailable in the other edition.

Question What to verify
Village or iron farm Required beds, workstations, villager state, spawn area and chunk-loading behavior for the edition
General hostile farm Mob cap, legal spawning spaces, simulation or render-distance assumptions and AFK range
Creeper farm Trapdoor pattern, ceiling height, spider prevention and ocean-level AFK instructions
Guardian farm Monument boundaries, water handling, transport and guardian damage behavior
Raid farm Village trigger, raid-spawn search, chunk coordinates, rotation and required distance from land

Official support material maintains separate Java and Bedrock guidance, and Mojang’s knowledge base continues to publish 2026 changelogs for both editions. Check the changelog and the tutorial’s tested release immediately before building. If the tutorial does not identify its edition and release, treat it as a concept guide, not a construction plan.

AFK, chunk loading and safety

Use the specified waiting position

The AFK point controls which spawning spaces are eligible and whether the farm remains active. “Stand above the farm” is not a universal instruction. Creeper designs may specify a position relative to ocean level; raid designs can require a precise orientation; guardian designs may place the player near a collection or killing area. Mark the position with a protected platform and a way to return safely.

Do not assume unattended production

The Java iron tutorial states that its farm can continue while the chunks are loaded without the player remaining present. That statement is specific to that Java design and its chunk-loading condition; it is not a promise that every mob farm runs without a player. Hostile farms generally need the player within the spawning geometry, and Bedrock simulation distance can change whether a remote mechanism is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent common AFK disasters

  • Build a roof, walls or a sealed platform against phantoms, hostile mobs and accidental falls.
  • Keep food, a weapon and a way to escape before starting a long session.
  • Use overflow chests, item filters or disposal so hoppers do not remain permanently full.
  • Watch entity counts; a blocked transport line can turn a farm into a lag source.
  • Test chunk unload and relog behavior before trusting the farm with valuable items.

How to choose your next farm

  1. Need building materials and automation? Start with an iron-golem farm matched to your edition.
  2. Need broad drops and XP? Build a general hostile-mob farm and invest in spawn-proofing.
  3. Need rockets or TNT? Add an ocean creeper farm after checking trapdoors, height and spider filtering for your release.
  4. Need monument materials or an endgame XP source? Plan a guardian farm around the monument and water work.
  5. Need emeralds and raid loot? Build a raid farm only after validating the edition, village behavior and any coordinate or rotation requirements.

When two farms solve the same problem, prefer the one with the clearer release note, safer maintenance access and a transparent AFK position. A design that explains its assumptions is easier to repair when a 2026 update changes a mechanic.

Using older farming references safely

Minecraft: Guide to Farming, published in hardcover on October 9, 2018 by Mojang AB and The Official Minecraft Team, covers hostile-mob and block farming as a beginner reference. It can explain foundational concepts, but its publication date predates the 2026 releases. Use it alongside a current edition-specific tutorial rather than as proof that a particular modern schematic still works.
