For a single nature clip, use an OBS Media Source, choose a supported local video file, and enable Loop. There is no universally best container or codec established for every computer: MP4 is a sensible starting point, but check the actual file in OBS on the machine you plan to use.
Which format should you use?
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported video file types for Media Sources. That is an extension list, not a guarantee that every codec, profile, or file using those extensions will play on every OBS build and system. If you already have a clip that plays correctly, you do not need to convert it just to make it loop. If you are choosing a format, MP4 is a reasonable common starting point; test the specific file in your OBS preview before relying on it.
The OBS documentation does not declare a single best input format for looping. Choose based on whether the file actually plays on your setup, how easily you can obtain or edit it, and any separate requirements you have for recording or editing.
Loop one nature clip in OBS
- Open the scene where the footage should appear. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if prompted, then choose Create new or select an existing source. In its properties, enable the local file option and browse to the video file.
- Turn on Loop. OBS defines this option as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed.
- Use the preview to confirm that the file plays and repeats as expected. If the source should start from the beginning whenever it becomes visible, review Restart playback when source becomes active. That setting is separate from Loop: one controls restarting on activation, the other controls what happens at the end of playback.
- Apply the properties and check the scene again before going live. Test the actual file and machine rather than assuming that its extension alone guarantees playback.
Use a playlist for multiple clips
For a sequence of nature videos, add a VLC Video Source instead of creating a separate looping Media Source for each clip. OBS documents playlist support for this source, with Loop Playlist enabled by default. This route requires VLC to be installed. OBS also specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

MP4 versus MKV: input and output are different choices
Do not confuse the format of a video OBS plays with the format OBS uses to record. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide discusses output recording and recommends MKV for many recording situations, including the option to remux recordings for compatibility. That advice is about recordings made by OBS; it does not establish MKV as the best format for a looping input clip or mean you should convert footage that already plays correctly.
If playback stutters or fails
- Check the file in the preview. Confirm the path is correct and that the selected file actually plays in the intended OBS setup. A supported extension does not establish codec-level compatibility across every system.
- Check VLC and architecture for a playlist. Install VLC if using VLC Video Source, and match its architecture to OBS; OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Test hardware decoding only where applicable. OBS offers hardware decoding for certain file types when the GPU has a suitable built-in decoder; the option is off by default. Try it only if the file type and GPU support it. The setting is not a guaranteed fix for a particular playback issue.
- Keep the problem in the right category. OBS hardware-encoding guidance concerns encoding an outgoing stream or recording. It does not establish which source-file format will decode or loop best.
