Across those different measures, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tetris, Doom, Half-Life 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time stand out—but they do not form one definitive top five.
Which games stand out across all-time rankings?
A useful starting point is to compare rankings by their methods rather than combine their positions as if they were measuring the same thing.
| Game | What the cited rankings say | What that result measures |
|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) | First in Acclaimed Video Games’ ranking, updated 25 March 2026; included on 109 lists. The site identifies Wii U and Nintendo Switch as platforms. Acclaimed Video Games | Recurrence across critics’ lists, not a guarantee that it suits every player or platform. |
| Tetris (1985) | Second in Acclaimed Video Games’ 2026 ranking and first in The Greatest Games’ displayed all-time ranking. Acclaimed Video Games · The Greatest Games | Two list-aggregation approaches that produce different placements. |
| Half-Life 2 (2004) | Third in Acclaimed Video Games’ 2026 ranking and among the titles on Metacritic’s all-time list. Acclaimed Video Games · Metacritic | List recurrence and critic-score-led ranking, respectively. |
| The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) | Fifth in Acclaimed Video Games’ 2026 ranking. Guinness World Records reported it was the only videogame with a Metascore of 99 as of 28 March 2025, on a record page dated 28 May 2025. Acclaimed Video Games · Guinness World Records | A place in a critic-list aggregate and a dated score record—not a timeless verdict. |
| Doom (1993) | Second in The Greatest Games’ displayed ranking and second in BAFTA’s 2025 public poll of influential games. The Greatest Games · BAFTA | List aggregation on one site; public judgment of influence in BAFTA’s poll. |
| Shenmue (1999) | Named the most influential video game in BAFTA’s public poll, announced 3 April 2025. BAFTA | Influence, rather than a direct ranking of overall game quality. |
Acclaimed Video Games says its ranking draws on 913 critic lists from 142 publications and covers 1,400 games; the page was updated 25 March 2026. The Greatest Games describes a different system that combines hundreds of lists from critics, developers, and players, with an algorithm that weighs each list’s quality, credibility, and scope. Their contrasting top choices—Breath of the Wild and Tetris—show why an all-time list is best read as evidence of acclaim under a particular method, not a universal verdict.
Why do all-time lists disagree?
Critic scores reward a different kind of acclaim
Metacritic’s all-time list is score-led. Its displayed results include Super Mario Galaxy, Grand Theft Auto V, Halo: Combat Evolved, Half-Life 2, and BioShock. The page is live and does not establish a fixed publication date, so its positions should be treated as a current observation rather than a dated historical ranking. See Metacritic’s all-time game list.
#1 Best Overall
A score can summarize how reviewers evaluated a game, but it does not by itself capture influence, popularity across generations, or how enjoyable the game will be for a particular player.
List aggregators count recurrence differently
Acclaimed Video Games reports the number of critic lists and publications it aggregates, while The Greatest Games says it weighs each source list’s quality, credibility, and scope. The exact composition of the source pool and the weighting method affect the outcome; compare each ranking’s stated method before comparing its positions.

Influence is not the same as quality
BAFTA’s April 2025 public poll named Shenmue the most influential game of all time, with Doom second. BAFTA points to Doom’s role in popularizing first-person shooters and deathmatch, and to Shenmue’s open-world simulation and dynamic systems. The poll measures influence as respondents understood it, not a comprehensive judgment of which game is best to play.
BAFTA’s announcement put the ambiguity plainly: “A game’s influence, and what this means to people, is open to many interpretations, and today’s top 21 list is made up of entries that have earned their place for a variety of reasons.” Its stated examples of influence include genre-defining systems, sales records, and communities.

How to choose a game to play
A famous ranking is a starting point, not a personalized recommendation. Use the criteria below to narrow the field before buying or downloading; the rankings do not establish current stock, prices, or the best platform for your setup.
- Check platform compatibility. Confirm which version runs on the hardware you own. Acclaimed Video Games lists Wii U and Switch for Breath of the Wild, but that does not establish current retail availability or which version is right for you.
- Pick the experience you want. For a compact, immediately legible puzzle game, Tetris is a different kind of starting point from an expansive adventure such as Breath of the Wild. If you want to explore the roots of a genre, consider Doom or Half-Life 2.
- Decide how much older design you are comfortable with. A game’s historical importance does not mean its controls, pacing, or interface will feel modern. Look for a current edition or platform version that you can actually play, and check how it differs before choosing.
- Match the yardstick to your question. Use score-led lists to find highly rated releases, multi-list rankings to find recurring critical picks, and influence polls to explore games with a legacy beyond their immediate reviews.
A practical shortlist
If you want a consensus-oriented place to begin, compare Breath of the Wild and Tetris: they lead different list-aggregation rankings. Choose Ocarina of Time for a landmark Zelda entry that also appears in a dated critic-score record, or look at Shenmue if your interest is historical influence rather than a conventional quality ranking. For any choice, check platform compatibility and the specific edition available to you.
