The best fit depends on what “playing as the villain” means to you. Tyranny puts you inside a tyrant’s victorious regime, serving as an agent of its law. Dishonored 2 and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider cast you as assassins, but let you choose whether to act with restraint or kill your way through. These games offer distinct kinds of villainy rather than one definitive ranking.
Which game best fits your idea of playing the villain?
| Game | Kind of villainy | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tyranny | Serving and shaping an established oppressive regime | Role-playing, political choices, and consequential decisions |
| Dishonored 2 | Choosing how lethal to be as an assassin | Stealth, supernatural abilities, and player-directed violence |
| Dishonored: Death of the Outsider | Taking on an assassination as an experienced assassin | A standalone route into the series’ stealth-and-combat fantasy |
Tyranny: play a role in the winning regime
Tyranny begins after the Overlord Kyros has conquered the land. You are a Fatebinder, an official serving that order—not a hero trying to defeat the tyrant from outside it. Obsidian’s official description calls the Fatebinder “the judge and executioner of Kyros’ law”; Paradox describes the player as an officer in the Overlord’s army. (Obsidian; Paradox)
The appeal is deciding how to enforce, reshape, or gain power within an occupied land. Your decisions affect people in the Tiers and the army’s factions; Paradox also notes that choices can alter allies, enemies, and even the world’s layout. Combat is tactical real-time with pause. Choose this if you want villainy to be part of the premise and your role-playing choices, rather than simply an option to kill more enemies.
Dishonored 2: decide how far to go
In Dishonored 2, you choose to play as Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano. Bethesda describes each as having distinct powers, gadgets, and weapons, and gives players options to fight through streets or sneak across rooftops. You can choose enemies to eliminate or spare, so the game supports a lethal, ruthless approach without requiring one. (Bethesda)

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose
- You want villainy built into the story: Start with Tyranny, where you serve the victorious Overlord’s regime.
- You want to choose your own level of brutality: Try Dishonored 2 or Death of the Outsider, both of which allow stealth and lethal approaches.
- You want consequential role-playing decisions: Choose Tyranny, which emphasizes choices that affect the world and its factions.
- You want assassin action and stealth: Either Dishonored game fits, with supernatural abilities alongside stealth or direct combat.
The distinction matters: Tyranny places you in service to an oppressive power; the Dishonored games let you choose violent methods as an assassin. A violent route alone does not necessarily make a protagonist a story’s villain.
