The strongest general-purpose shortlist is Carry On (also listed as Carry Capacity), Auto Map Markers, ProspectTogether, BetterRuins, Primitive Survival, QP’s Chisel Tools, Vinconomy, Player Corpse, and VSEssentials. These names come from secondary server and mod guides, so check each mod’s current entry on the official Mod DB before installation.

The current version family discussed by those guides is 1.22. Your server, every player’s client, and each mod must be compatible with the same game version. A 1.22.2 server refusing a 1.22.1 client is a reported example; exact compatibility should be confirmed for the release you are running.
Which mods are worth installing first?
Choose mods according to the problem your community actually has. A lightly modified cooperative world benefits from mapping and administration tools, while a long-running role-play or building server can justify economy, ruins, survival-system, and construction overhauls. Install one functional group at a time, restart, and let players connect before adding another group. That makes a failed update identifiable and keeps a new world from being locked to an unmaintained dependency.

The list is a starting point, not a guarantee that every current file supports 1.22. Secondary lists can lag behind a mod’s latest release, rename a project, or describe a build for an older game branch. The Mod DB listing, release notes and dependency field are the authority for the file you actually download.
Recommended mod combinations by server style
Small cooperative survival server
Begin with VSEssentials for administration, Auto Map Markers for shared exploration, and ProspectTogether for coordinated prospecting. Add Carry On only after confirming its exact current package and dependency. This combination improves navigation and moderation without changing world generation or the early-game rules.
Exploration and discovery server
Use BetterRuins with Auto Map Markers and ProspectTogether. Create a fresh test world before committing to a public map, because ruins and other generated structures can affect unexplored terrain. If the test is stable, make the same mod set mandatory for every client that needs the added content.
Harder or broader early game
Primitive Survival is the major choice here. Fishing, trapping and related systems can change food progression and the value of existing resources. Keep it separate from unrelated additions during the first test so you can identify balance or recipe conflicts.
Builder community
QP’s Chisel Tools is aimed at repeatable construction: Pantograph and Portfolio can copy, paste and save designs across worlds and servers. Pair it with VSEssentials for moderation, then establish a backup and permission policy before opening paste tools to ordinary players.

Trading town or role-play world
Vinconomy supplies stalls and trade passes for a player-run market. Decide in advance whether staff may revoke stalls, how abandoned shops are handled, and whether trade passes are limited. Player Corpse can add a tangible risk-and-recovery cycle to the same style of persistent world.
Version matching is the first compatibility check
Use the same Vintage Story version family on the server and clients, and then match every mod to that family. The guides used for this shortlist center on 1.22. A reported example says a 1.22.2 server refused a 1.22.1 client; treat that as a practical warning from hosting coverage rather than as a quoted official compatibility policy.

- Open the mod’s current page in the official Mod DB.
- Read the supported Vintage Story versions, not just the upload date.
- Check required libraries and optional integrations. Carry On’s 2.0 pre-releases, for example, are described as requiring CarryOnLib.
- Look for separate server, client and universal files. A client-only utility cannot be made active for everyone by placing it only on the server.
- Read the changelog for world-generation, recipe, save-format or migration warnings.
- Download the file for the exact game branch and keep the original archive name so you can identify it during rollback.
Do not copy a version number from a search snippet or an old list into your configuration. One guide specifically labels Better Crops 0.9.2 as “1.21 ONLY, DO NOT UPDATE.” It is a useful illustration of the risk, not a recommendation for a 2026 1.22 server.
How to install mods on a Vintage Story dedicated server
1. Install the dedicated server files
The dedicated server ships with Vintage Story. The server executable is in the game’s application folder, while the server’s data is stored in a separate data folder. Keep the executable and data locations clear in your backup plan; replacing one does not automatically restore the other.
2. Install the runtime required by your game version
The current version-specific mapping in the wiki is:

An older multiplayer setup page still lists .NET 7 without this version split. For a current installation, use the mapping for the game version you actually installed. On Linux, the Flatpak build bundles the runtime; a conventional installation does not.

3. Launch the server on Linux
From the directory containing the server files, the wiki documents either of these launch forms:
dotnet VintagestoryServer.dllor, when DOTNET_ROOT is set:
./VintagestoryServerRun the command once without mods to generate the data directory and confirm that the base server starts. Stop it cleanly before editing files.
4. Confirm hardware capacity
The wiki’s rough baseline is 1 GB of RAM plus 300 MB per player, with four recommended CPU threads. Treat those figures as a floor for an unexceptional workload, not a promise for a heavily modded world. Generation-heavy mods, many entities, long view distances and simultaneous exploration can require more memory and processor time. Leave operating-system headroom and watch actual usage during a busy session before inviting more players.
5. Open the network port
The default server port is 42420; you can override it with --port. Forward TCP on that port for remote players. The wiki also says that, from version 1.20 onward, UDP should be forwarded. Configure both protocols on your router and host firewall, then test from a network outside the server’s local LAN. On Linux, the documented firewall choices include firewalld, iptables and ufw.

6. Configure the server
On Linux, the configuration file is ./data/serverconfig.json inside the server directory. The server reads configuration after a relaunch. Stop the process before editing, or run /autosavenow and then /stop so the current state is written before you make changes.
7. Add a dedicated mods directory
The ModPaths key tells the server where to look for mods. On Linux, retain the first "Mods" entry because it contains base-game files, then add your own mods path after it. Place mod ZIP archives in that additional directory while the server is offline. Restart and inspect the startup log for dependency, version or load errors.
Do not unzip an archive unless that mod’s instructions explicitly require it. Keep a manifest containing each filename, version, dependency and installation date. When a problem appears, you can remove the most recently added archive instead of guessing.
8. Install the client-side portion
Client-only mods must be installed separately by each player. For universal or content-adding mods, follow the Mod DB instructions to determine whether the same archive belongs on both server and client. Give players the exact filenames and game-version requirement; “install the latest version” is unsafe when the server is pinned to a specific 1.22 build.

- Start the server with the complete test set and watch the console for load failures.
- Connect with a client using the same Vintage Story version.
- Join with each intended permission role and test commands, teleportation, market actions and building tools separately.
- For BetterRuins or Primitive Survival, create a disposable world and verify new generation or progression behavior.
- Save, stop, relaunch and confirm that inventories, map markers, stalls and corpses persist as expected.
- Only then copy the tested files and configuration to the public server or production world.
Dedicated-server administration details that prevent avoidable failures
Backups and rollback
Back up the data folder, serverconfig.json, the mods directory and the exact server executable version together. A mod that changes world generation or saved data can make a downgrade unsafe. Keep at least one backup from before every mod addition and every game update. Test restoring a copy rather than assuming that a ZIP archive alone is sufficient.

Whitelist and permissions
One hosting guide says the whitelist is enabled by default, but you should confirm the value in your own configuration instead of relying on that report. If players cannot connect, check whitelist status before changing ports or reinstalling mods. For VSEssentials and any building or economy commands, grant the minimum permission level needed and test with a non-admin account.
World-generation timing
Structure and terrain additions are safest before a new world is explored. Installing BetterRuins after players have mapped large areas may leave already generated terrain unchanged while new terrain receives ruins, producing an uneven world. Explain this behavior to players before enabling a generation mod on an established save.
Mod load order and dependencies
Keep the base-game Mods path first, followed by your custom path as described for Linux. Do not solve a missing dependency by downloading an unrelated file with a similar name. Read the current dependency declaration; Carry On’s documented 2.0 pre-release requirement for CarryOnLib is an example of why the library must be matched to the parent mod.
Troubleshooting a modded Vintage Story server
The server will not start
- Confirm that the .NET runtime matches the Vintage Story version: .NET 10 for 1.22.0 and newer, .NET 8 for 1.21.0–1.21.6, or .NET 7 for 1.20.x through 1.18.8.
- Launch without the newest mod. If the server starts, check that mod’s supported version and dependencies.
- Verify that
ModPathspoints to the intended directory and that the archive is readable by the account running the server. - Restore the previous manifest and backup if the error follows a world or save-format change.
A player is rejected during connection
- Compare the complete game version on both sides; do not compare only the first two numbers.
- Check whether the player is missing a client-side or universal mod.
- Check for a different mod file with the same project name but a different release.
- Confirm whitelist status if the player is not listed.
Players cannot reach the server from outside the home network
- Confirm that the server is listening on the configured port, including any value supplied with
--port. - Forward TCP 42420 by default and UDP as required for version 1.20 and newer.
- Allow the same protocols through the host firewall using firewalld, iptables or ufw.
- Test from a different network to avoid mistaking a local routing success for an internet-accessible setup.
A feature appears missing in game
- Check whether the feature is client-only and needs to be installed by that player.
- Confirm that the world was generated after installing a structure or terrain mod.
- Check permissions for VSEssentials commands, QP’s Chisel Tools operations and Vinconomy administration.
- Read the mod’s current log messages rather than adding a second copy of the archive.
Should you use a community Docker image?
A community image named ralnoc/vintagestory is available and maps port 42420 on both TCP and UDP. It is not official. Docker can make repeatable deployments and volume backups easier, but it adds another layer for runtime variables, file ownership, networking and upgrades. If you use it, pin the image and game version, persist the data and mods directories outside the container, document the mapped ports, and test a restore before treating the container as production infrastructure.
A practical 2026 installation order
- Install the dedicated server and the runtime for the exact Vintage Story release.
- Start an unmodded test instance and confirm local connectivity.
- Set the port, firewall and router forwarding for TCP and, on 1.20 or newer, UDP.
- Back up the clean data directory.
- Add VSEssentials and test administration with a limited account.
- Add Auto Map Markers and ProspectTogether, then test multiplayer map behavior.
- Add Carry On only after checking whether you are using the stable 1.14.x line or a 2.0 pre-release with CarryOnLib.
- For a new world, add BetterRuins or Primitive Survival before exploration and test generation or progression.
- Add QP’s Chisel Tools, Vinconomy or Player Corpse according to the community’s actual needs, testing permissions and persistence after each change.
- Publish a player handout listing the exact game version, required client files and connection address.
What to leave out until it is verified
Do not install a mod simply because an old guide calls it “best.” The lists behind this shortlist were secondary sources, and their compatibility was not individually verified against the current Mod DB entries. In particular, ambiguous names such as Carry On versus Carry Capacity require an exact project-page check, and old version warnings such as Better Crops being 1.21-only demonstrate how quickly advice becomes unsafe. If a mod has no current release for your server’s game version, leave it out rather than forcing it with a dependency workaround.
