For the most reliable Fallen Dragon victory, play the vocation you control confidently, with Thief as the strongest damage-first option because Skull Splitter can repeatedly punish exposed flesh. Warfarer is the flexible alternative if you can manage vocation swapping and want healing, ranged, and close-range tools. Bring a healing Mage, a Fighter or Warrior that can hold the dragon’s attention, and a second damage dealer. A Sorcerer with Maelstrom and High Frigor gives the group a practical answer to Ghoul waves.
The complete encounter happens during Reunion at the Summit Ritual Grounds. The Fallen Dragon appearance at Mountain Stronghold ends in a scene and is not the full boss kill, so do not spend your final supplies assuming that earlier sequence is the conclusion.

Know which Fallen Dragon encounter you are entering
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen presents the decisive Fallen Dragon battle during the Reunion sequence at the Summit Ritual Grounds. You reach the fight after the elevator section, then commit to an arena where the party must manage a large target, exposed weak spots, summoned Ghouls, and major magical attacks.
The Mountain Stronghold appearance is different. That encounter concludes with a scene rather than the complete boss defeat. If you are planning equipment, healing items, or Wakestones, plan around the Summit Ritual Grounds battle, not the earlier sighting.

Reunion gives you a final opportunity to check the party before the elevator section. Rest, refill healing supplies, carry Wakestones, and confirm that every Pawn has suitable equipment. Once the sequence begins, replacing a missing role or correcting an empty inventory is much harder than doing it beforehand.
Preparation checklist
- Rest before entering the Reunion sequence so the party starts with full health.
- Refill healing items for the Arisen and Pawns.
- Carry Wakestones for recoveries after a failed positioning exchange or a heavy magical hit.
- Verify that the Mage has a dependable healing role and that the front-line Pawn has the equipment and skills needed to attract attention.
- Decide who will handle Ghoul waves before the elevator ride begins.
Choose the vocation you can pilot reliably
There is no authoritative developer-prescribed vocation, damage multiplier, or boss-health threshold for this fight. The practical choice is the vocation whose movement, stamina use, and defensive options you already understand. A theoretically stronger setup is less useful if you cannot reach an exposed spot or recover from a bad attack.
Thief: the clearest damage-first choice
Thief is the most direct recommendation when your priority is shortening each weak-point opening. Skull Splitter is repeatedly recommended for heavy damage, allowing a confident Thief player to capitalize when unscaled flesh is exposed. The vocation also suits a fight that asks you to move between lower and higher sections of a large body rather than stand in one place.
Use Thief when you are comfortable staying close to the dragon without abandoning the healer. Start on a reachable arm or foreleg, attack the exposed flesh until that spot breaks, then reposition instead of continuing to swing at a protected section. The damage plan works only when you preserve enough awareness to retreat from magic attacks and Ghoul pressure.
Warfarer: flexibility at the cost of management
Warfarer is useful when you can manage vocation swapping under pressure. Its value is access to healing, ranged, and close-range tools in one adaptable loadout. That flexibility can cover a weak party role, let you attack a high wing or head when the lower body is inaccessible, and give you a way to contribute while Ghouls are being cleared.
Do not choose Warfarer solely because it offers more options. Swapping at the wrong moment can leave you without the tool you expected when the dragon exposes a weak spot or a magical attack begins. It is best for players who already know their swap sequence and can keep track of the party while changing roles.

Any other vocation: reliability beats theory
If your practiced vocation is neither Thief nor Warfarer, use it. The fight rewards consistent weak-point access, sensible retreats, and fast recovery more than an unfamiliar damage rotation. A reliable player who stays alive and keeps pressure on exposed flesh contributes more than a player repeatedly knocked down while attempting a supposedly optimal setup.

Skills that have a clear job in the encounter
Every useful skill should answer one of four needs: damage an exposed weak spot, clear Ghouls, keep the party alive, or control where enemies are looking. Organize the loadout around those jobs rather than filling every slot with boss damage.
Skull Splitter for repeated weak-point damage
On a Thief, Skull Splitter is the named damage skill most consistently associated with this fight. Save its use for unscaled flesh that is actually exposed. Hitting armor, a protected body section, or empty air during a reposition wastes the opening and can leave you trapped under the dragon when the arena becomes dangerous.
Maelstrom and High Frigor for Ghoul control
A Sorcerer carrying Maelstrom and High Frigor gives the party a practical way to answer summoned Ghouls while still contributing meaningful area pressure. These skills are especially valuable when several Ghouls reach the healer or split the group’s attention. The Sorcerer should not tunnel on the dragon if a Ghoul wave is about to overwhelm the back line.
Healing and taunts are encounter skills, not optional extras
The Mage’s primary job is sustained healing. The front-line Fighter or Warrior should use taunt skills to draw attention away from the Mage and any Pawn preparing a long cast. No mandatory named healing or taunt skill is established, so judge the loadout by whether it performs those jobs consistently in your version of the game.

Ranged reach for high or distant sections
Ranged Pawns can continue contributing when the dragon’s head or wings are too high for a grounded melee attack. Mages, Sorcerers, and Archers also spend less time directly beneath the body, which can make the team more resilient while the target shifts position. Long-range support is not a substitute for healing or attention control, but it prevents the party from becoming idle whenever a low section is inaccessible.

Build the Pawn party around jobs
A balanced group covers sustained healing, attention control, reach or mobility, and area damage for Ghoul waves. The most forgiving default is a healing Mage, a Fighter or Warrior, and another damage dealer. Your own vocation supplies the remaining role.
| Party slot | Recommended job | What it contributes | What happens if it is missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery | Mage focused on healing | Restores health after magic attacks, Ghoul contact, and failed weak-point approaches. | The party must spend more consumables and has less margin for a long Reunion sequence. |
| Attention control | Fighter or Warrior with taunt skills | Pulls pressure away from the Mage and damage dealers so they can cast or reach exposed flesh. | Ghouls and the dragon can interrupt the healer or scatter the group. |
| Primary damage | Thief, Warfarer, or another practiced damage vocation | Converts each exposed weak spot into progress. | The battle lasts longer, giving magic attacks and Ghoul waves more chances to disrupt the party. |
| Reach or area damage | Sorcerer, Archer, or another damage Pawn | Attacks high sections and helps clear Ghoul waves; a Sorcerer can bring Maelstrom and High Frigor. | The party may struggle when the lower body is blocked or when Ghouls arrive in numbers. |
The default balanced setup
Use a healing Mage, a Fighter or Warrior with taunts, and a second damage Pawn while you play Thief. This arrangement gives you direct damage, a dependable recovery source, a Pawn that can hold attention, and enough additional output to keep openings meaningful.
The long-range variation
If you prefer distance or frequently lose melee access to the head and wings, make the damage Pawn a Sorcerer or Archer. A guide by Dave Aubrey at Video Games Chronicle notes that a party with long-range Pawns such as Mages, Sorcerers, and Archers can keep the team alive longer. That is a guide-writer observation, not a developer guarantee, but it reflects the practical benefit of attacking while spending less time under the dragon.
The damage-first variation
A second close-range damage Pawn can shorten openings when your party already survives reliably. The trade-off is less forgiving recovery when Ghouls reach the healer or a major magical attack catches several members. Use this version only if you can clear adds quickly and maintain your own defensive discipline.
How to run the fight at Summit Ritual Grounds
- Enter with the prepared party. Rest, refill healing supplies, carry Wakestones, and confirm equipment before committing to the elevator section.
- Identify an exposed section. Target the dragon’s unscaled flesh rather than treating every visible body part as equally vulnerable.
- Start with reachable arms or forelegs. These lower sections are usually the safest place to begin because they do not require an immediate high-angle attack.
- Commit until the weak spot breaks. Keep pressure on one exposed spot instead of scattering attacks across the body. When it breaks, move to the next reachable section.
- Shift toward the head and wings when positioning permits. Use ranged reach, mobility, or a change in angle rather than standing beneath the dragon and waiting for an unsafe opening.
- Pause boss damage when Ghouls appear. If they are pressuring the Mage, splitting Pawns, or preventing a safe approach, clear them before returning to the dragon.
- Use arena rocks as cover. When the dragon signals a major magical attack, move behind the large rocks instead of trying to finish a damage animation in the open.
- Restore the party before the next push. Heal and revive Pawns, regroup, and only then resume the next weak-point attack.
Weak spots: what to hit and when to move
The target is the dragon’s unscaled flesh. The practical method is to work one exposed weak spot until it breaks, then choose another section based on reach and safety. Begin with arms or forelegs that you can access without crossing the entire arena. As the fight changes, move toward the head and wings when their position makes them reachable.
Do not interpret a missed strike as proof that the vocation is ineffective. A large body can place the target above your attack line, behind a limb, or outside the current angle. Change position, use a ranged Pawn’s reach, or wait for the body to settle. Repeating the same attack from an obstructed angle only increases exposure to the next magic attack or Ghoul wave.

When a weak spot breaks
A broken spot is a cue to reassess, not an invitation to remain in the same location. Check whether another low section is exposed, whether the head or wings have moved into range, and whether Ghouls have entered the arena. If the healer is under pressure, the correct next action is add control or regrouping rather than immediate boss damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to deal with summoned Ghouls
Ghouls are an encounter-management problem. They can pressure the healer, divide the party, and interrupt the long casts or close-range attacks that make progress possible. The correct response depends on their position, not on a fixed timer or a damage race.
Keep attacking the dragon when the back line is safe
If Ghouls are distant and the Mage is protected, continue the current weak-point push while a capable Pawn handles them. Avoid abandoning a nearly broken spot merely because an add has appeared at the edge of the arena.
Stop boss damage when the party is being split
Switch priorities immediately when Ghouls reach the healer, force Pawns away from one another, or prevent the Sorcerer from completing a clearing cast. The Fighter or Warrior should draw attention with taunts while the damage dealer clears a safe path. A Sorcerer’s Maelstrom and High Frigor are practical tools for this job.
Regroup after the wave
Once the Ghouls are controlled, revive any fallen Pawn and restore health before returning to the next weak spot. Rushing back with a damaged Mage or missing front line can turn a manageable wave into a full party collapse.

Large rocks around the arena provide cover when the dragon signals a major magical attack. Move behind them early enough to avoid being caught in the open. This is one reason a damage-first party is less forgiving: an extra damage Pawn does not compensate for several members losing health at once.

Use the cover phase to issue simple priorities. The Mage should be ready to restore health, the Fighter or Warrior should recover attention control, and the damage Pawns should avoid wandering into a fresh Ghoul pack. When the attack ends, approach the next exposed section as a group rather than sending one Pawn forward alone.
Recovery branches when the plan breaks
The Mage is being attacked
Stop chasing the dragon and remove the immediate Ghoul pressure. Have the Fighter or Warrior use taunts, then clear the enemies nearest the healer. Once the Mage can cast safely, restore health before resuming the boss.
A Pawn is down
Revive the Pawn before the next weak-point push if the missing role matters to survival. A fallen Mage, front-line controller, or add-clearing Sorcerer changes the party’s risk profile; continuing without that role can create a second down before you reach the dragon.

Regroup near cover or a safe edge of the arena. Do not sprint after a distant weak spot while one or more Pawns are still recovering. The dragon’s body, Ghouls, and magical attacks are easier to handle when the party can see and support one another.
You cannot reach the current target
Change to a lower exposed section, use ranged reach, or wait for the dragon to reposition. An inaccessible head or wing is a positioning issue, not a reason to spend every stamina resource jumping beneath it.
Healing supplies are running low
Prioritize the Mage’s recovery role, use cover during major magic attacks, and avoid optional damage trades. Wakestones are a reserve for a failed exchange or a critical down, not a replacement for regrouping after every hit.
Pick a party according to your tolerance for risk
| Setup | Best for | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced: Mage, Fighter/Warrior, damage Pawn | Most players and first attempts | Covers healing, attention control, and sustained damage. | Less explosive than a full damage group. |
| Long-range: Mage, Fighter/Warrior, Sorcerer or Archer | Players who struggle to stay beneath the body | Maintains pressure on high or distant sections and can reduce direct exposure. | Still needs a front line and can lose time if Ghouls reach the back line. |
| Add-control: Mage, Fighter/Warrior, Sorcerer with Maelstrom and High Frigor | Arena attempts where Ghouls cause most failures | Answers Ghoul waves while preserving the Mage’s recovery role. | Requires the Sorcerer to switch attention between adds and the boss. |
| Damage-first: Mage plus two damage dealers | Confident players who clear interruptions quickly | Converts safe openings into faster progress. | Less forgiving when magic attacks or Ghouls interrupt the healer. |
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The recommendations here are practical guide-backed tactics, not mandatory mechanics. No authoritative named statistics establish the Fallen Dragon’s health, damage multipliers, or a required vocation. Treat claims about survivability, long-range safety, and skill value as informed encounter advice rather than fixed numerical rules.

A concise decision rule before you enter
Choose Thief if you want the clearest damage plan and can stay mobile around the body. Choose Warfarer if you already manage vocation swaps and need healing, ranged, and close-range options. Whichever vocation you use, bring a healing Mage, an attention-controlling Fighter or Warrior, and a damage Pawn that can reach difficult sections or clear Ghouls. Start on an exposed arm or foreleg, break one weak spot at a time, use rocks for major magic attacks, and suspend boss damage whenever Ghouls threaten the healer or split the party.
