For most large MySQL databases, start with a dedicated-CPU, memory-optimized VPS and size it from the database’s measured working set—not from total disk usage. DigitalOcean’s memory-optimized Droplets advertise 8 GB of RAM per vCPU for high-performance SQL and NoSQL databases, while its storage-optimized line uses NVMe for large data workloads. AWS Lightsail provides a predictable reference bundle: 32 GB RAM, 4 vCPUs, 320 GB storage and 6 TB transfer for $144 per month on its 2026 memory-optimized Linux plan. Those specifications identify sensible starting points, but the right choice still depends on I/O limits, CPU policy, region, backups, recovery objectives and the amount of data MySQL must keep hot.
Quick verdict
Choose a dedicated-CPU, memory-optimized VPS when your application performs sustained queries, writes, replication or maintenance jobs. Use the available RAM primarily for the InnoDB buffer pool, then reserve capacity for connections, temporary tables, the operating system and monitoring. If the database is large because it scans or writes a great deal of data, evaluate an NVMe storage-optimized plan as well; fast media cannot compensate for an undersized buffer pool or throttled CPU.

DigitalOcean is the strongest directly documented fit in the available provider descriptions: its memory-optimized plan specifies 8 GB RAM per vCPU and names high-performance SQL databases as a target workload, while its storage-optimized plan specifies NVMe for large-data workloads. AWS Lightsail is the clearer fixed-budget comparison, with a 32 GB bundle at $144 per month, but its bundle page does not establish dedicated CPU, provisioned IOPS, backup retention or a MySQL-specific performance level. Treat the figures as plan descriptions, not independent benchmarks.
Define “large” before selecting a plan
“Large database” can mean hundreds of gigabytes on disk, a modest database with a very large active index set, or a smaller database receiving thousands of concurrent requests. These cases need different resources. Record the following values for a representative busy period:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Total logical size: Sum table data, indexes, system tables and binary logs. Include free space needed for rebuilds, schema changes and temporary copies.
- Working set: The rows and index pages accessed repeatedly. This is the portion that benefits most from RAM; total disk size alone does not determine memory.
- Read/write mix: Separate read queries, inserts, updates, deletes and bulk jobs. Write-heavy systems stress CPU, storage latency and log durability simultaneously.
- Concurrency: Capture active connections and peak query concurrency, not just the connection-pool maximum.
- Growth: Measure weekly or monthly data growth and index growth so the volume and backup destination will remain usable.
- Recovery objectives: Define the maximum acceptable data loss (RPO) and the maximum restoration time (RTO) before comparing backup designs.
| Input | How to measure | Why it changes the VPS choice |
|---|---|---|
| Database and index bytes | SELECT table_schema, SUM(data_length + index_length) AS bytes FROM information_schema.tables GROUP BY table_schema; |
Determines volume capacity and room for maintenance operations. |
| Hot data and index pages | Review buffer-pool hit rate, page reads and table-access patterns during peak traffic. | Sets the RAM target more accurately than total database size. |
| CPU pressure | Observe CPU utilization, query latency and load during normal traffic and maintenance. | Indicates whether shared CPU or throttling will become a bottleneck. |
| Storage pressure | Measure read/write latency, queue depth, fsync latency and log-write throughput. | Determines whether NVMe or higher provisioned I/O is necessary. |
| Recovery demand | Document restore time from a test backup and the latest recoverable transaction. | Separates a cheap snapshot from a usable production recovery system. |
How much RAM does MySQL need on a VPS?
Start with the memory-optimized ratio as a comparison point, not a rule: DigitalOcean states that its memory-optimized Droplets provide 8 GB RAM for each vCPU. Allocate enough memory for the InnoDB buffer pool to hold the frequently accessed data and indexes, then leave explicit headroom for connection buffers, temporary tables, sorting, replication, background jobs, the operating system and monitoring. A server that appears full of cache can still fail when a reporting query creates large temporary tables or when hundreds of connections arrive together.
Use measurements instead of a fixed percentage
- Measure buffer-pool hit rate and disk reads during the busiest normal period.
- Increase the proposed buffer pool in a staging copy until additional memory produces little reduction in physical reads.
- Reserve memory for the highest expected connection count. Per-connection buffers are multiplied by concurrent sessions, not by the number of configured users.
- Run representative writes, online schema changes and backups while watching swap activity. Any regular swapping is a sizing or workload-isolation problem.
If the working set is close to the available RAM, move to the next memory tier before adding CPU. Extra vCPUs do not replace cache capacity. Conversely, if the working set is small but analytics scans large tables, additional memory may not remove the need for fast storage and sufficient CPU.

Prefer a VPS with reserved or dedicated CPU capacity for a production database that runs continuously. Query execution, compression, replication apply, binary-log processing, checksums and backup preparation can overlap; a shared CPU that looks adequate in an idle test may be throttled during a busy period. Compare the actual vCPU generation, reservation policy and throttling behavior exposed by each provider.
The AWS Lightsail 32 GB memory-optimized Linux bundle lists 4 vCPUs, but the published bundle description does not establish whether those CPUs are dedicated or how they are throttled. Ask for that information or validate it with a controlled load test before making it the primary database host. The same qualification applies to any plan whose marketing page lists memory but not CPU guarantees.

Storage: capacity, latency and durability are separate decisions
NVMe can lower latency and increase throughput compared with regular SSD storage. DigitalOcean describes NVMe as faster than regular SSD and positions its storage-optimized Droplets for large data workloads. That is a useful direction, not a measured MySQL benchmark. Confirm the actual provisioned IOPS, burst behavior, queue limits and durability model for the region and volume type you will use.
Size the volume for more than today’s data
- Keep free space for temporary tables, index creation, table rebuilds and binary logs.
- Account for the second copy created by some online schema-change methods.
- Place backups outside the database volume and, where possible, outside the same failure domain.
- Check whether snapshots include attached volumes and whether restoring them preserves the required consistency point.
A large database on a fast but nearly full volume is less reliable than a smaller database with operating room. Capacity planning should include projected growth through the next hardware upgrade, not just the current table total.

The Lightsail price is a recurring monthly list figure for the 2026 32 GB memory-optimized Linux bundle, not a guaranteed total bill. Transfer overages, attached storage, snapshots, public IPv4 use and other services can change the invoice. DigitalOcean’s 20% weekly-backup figure is tied to Droplet cost; it is not a complete statement of retention or point-in-time recovery.
When DigitalOcean’s memory-optimized plan is the better starting point
Choose the memory-optimized design when your measured working set is the main constraint and your query profile benefits from keeping hot tables and indexes in RAM. The published 8 GB-per-vCPU ratio gives you a transparent way to compare tiers. For example, a four-vCPU size at that ratio would provide 32 GB of RAM; the usable MySQL allocation would be lower after the operating system, connections and operational headroom are reserved.

Confirm the region that serves the application and replicas, the CPU policy of the exact Droplet family, attached-volume limits, snapshot behavior and backup retention. If your data set is much larger than memory and performs sustained scans or writes, compare the storage-optimized NVMe line rather than assuming the memory-optimized tier has equivalent I/O.
When AWS Lightsail is the better reference point
The 32 GB Lightsail bundle is useful when a simple, bundled monthly number matters. It provides 4 vCPUs, 320 GB of storage and 6 TB of transfer for $144 per month according to the 2026 bundle listing. The same product family publishes 64 GB, 128 GB, 192 GB and 256 GB options, which can make vertical scaling straightforward if your workload fits the bundle model.
Before putting a production primary there, obtain answers for CPU sharing, storage IOPS and durability, snapshot consistency, backup retention, restoration time and regional availability. A predictable bundle does not by itself prove that MySQL will meet latency or recovery targets. Include possible transfer overage in your cost model if the application serves large downloads or cross-region replicas.
A step-by-step VPS selection process
- Write the workload brief. Record database size, working-set estimate, peak connections, read/write mix, growth rate, RPO and RTO. Do not choose a plan from storage size alone.
- Set the memory floor. Select a tier where the hot data and indexes fit while leaving room for connection buffers, temporary work, the operating system and monitoring. Use the 8 GB-per-vCPU figure as a comparison baseline only.
- Choose CPU capacity. Prefer dedicated CPU for sustained production workloads. Verify generation, reservation and throttling terms rather than comparing vCPU counts in isolation.
- Choose storage. Match usable capacity to current data, growth and maintenance copies. Select NVMe or another high-IOPS option when latency and log throughput are limiting factors.
- Map the network. Put the primary, application and replicas in appropriate regions. Calculate normal and peak transfer, then include published overage charges in the budget.
- Design recovery before deployment. Decide snapshot frequency, binary-log or point-in-time recovery, retention, off-site copies and restore-test frequency. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not an RTO.
- Load-test safely. Use a staging clone with production-shaped data and queries. Test peak concurrency, writes, failover, backup creation and restoration; report observed results as your own test, not as a provider benchmark.
- Document the upgrade path. Confirm whether RAM, CPU, storage and network can be increased independently, and whether a resize requires downtime or a migration.
Backup and recovery design
Snapshots are only one layer
Snapshots are convenient for fast rollback, but they do not automatically provide transaction-level recovery or protection from every regional failure. Combine a consistent database backup with binary logs when your RPO requires recovery to a recent point in time. Keep at least one copy outside the primary VPS and test that credentials, encryption keys and configuration files are available during a restore.

Measure the restore, not just the backup
- Restore the latest full backup into an isolated instance.
- Apply logs to the target recovery point.
- Run application and consistency checks, including row counts and critical queries.
- Record elapsed time, storage used, CPU load and any manual steps.
- Repeat on a schedule that matches your RTO and retention policy.
DigitalOcean’s stated weekly-backup charge of 20% of Droplet cost tells you the price relationship for that feature, but it does not specify retention or point-in-time behavior. Lightsail’s bundled transfer figure likewise does not describe a complete backup service. Obtain those operational details for the exact plan and region.

- Use encrypted connections between the application, replicas and administrative clients.
- Restrict MySQL exposure with network rules; do not leave the database port open to the public internet.
- Set durable binary logging and monitor disk consumption so logs cannot fill the volume.
- Alert on replication lag, failed backups, storage latency, swap activity, connection exhaustion and rising query latency.
- Separate database data, temporary space and backup destinations when the provider’s volume model allows it.
- Apply operating-system and MySQL security updates during a tested maintenance window.
- Keep infrastructure configuration, schema migrations and recovery instructions in version control.
Common failure modes and fixes
The VPS has plenty of disk but MySQL is slow
Large capacity does not imply low latency or high IOPS. Check queue depth, fsync latency, buffer-pool misses and CPU steal time. Move to NVMe or a higher-I/O tier only after identifying storage as the limiting resource.
Queries fail after traffic spikes
Connection buffers and temporary tables can consume memory rapidly. Inspect concurrent sessions and per-connection settings, cap pool sizes, optimize the heaviest queries and move to a larger memory tier if the measured peak still exceeds safe headroom.
Backups complete but recovery misses the target
Measure restore duration and the latest recoverable transaction. Add more frequent full backups, retain binary logs for the required window, use an off-site copy and automate restore verification.

A resize improves memory but not latency
The workload may be CPU- or I/O-bound, or the provider may throttle the selected CPU tier. Compare CPU wait, storage latency and query plans before paying for another memory increase.

How to make the final decision
Pick DigitalOcean’s memory-optimized design when the measured working set needs its high memory-to-vCPU ratio and you can verify CPU, volume and recovery characteristics for your region. Pick its storage-optimized NVMe design when large-data I/O, rather than cache capacity, dominates the workload. Use the AWS Lightsail 32 GB bundle as a straightforward budget baseline when 4 vCPUs, 320 GB storage and 6 TB transfer fit the workload, but price transfer overages and verify the missing operational specifications.
No provider description supplies a universal “best” MySQL performance result. The defensible winner is the smallest plan that passes your workload-shaped test, keeps recovery within the documented RPO and RTO, and has a tested upgrade path. Recheck regional prices, I/O limits, backup retention and restore options immediately before committing because those details can change independently of headline memory and storage figures.
