Best VPS Size for an HAProxy Load Balancer in 2026

A 2-vCPU, 4-GiB VPS is a practical HAProxy starting point in 2026. Learn when dedicated CPU, more RAM, stronger networking, or a second instance is required—and how to benchmark the decision.

Start with 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB of RAM for a modest HAProxy deployment in 2026. Treat that specification as a measured starting point, not a guaranteed throughput limit. Choose dedicated CPU when HAProxy will terminate substantial TLS traffic, encrypt or compress data, evaluate complex ACLs, handle frequent connection churn, or must deliver predictable latency. For high availability, run at least two HAProxy VPS instances in separate failure domains and monitor them from outside the pair.

The practical starting size

A VPS with 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB of RAM is a defensible first allocation for a small-to-moderate HAProxy load balancer. It leaves room for the operating system, HAProxy, metrics, and logs without forcing you to pay for a large machine before you know what the workload needs. It is a sizing hypothesis: actual capacity depends on protocol mix, TLS handshakes, concurrent connections, bandwidth, latency, and configuration.

Workload characteristic Starting choice When to move up
Light HTTP/TCP proxying, low connection churn 2 vCPU, 4 GiB; shared CPU can be acceptable Increase after sustained CPU pressure, rising queue time, or connection growth
Regular TLS termination or compression 2 vCPU, 4 GiB on dedicated CPU when predictable latency matters Move to 4 or more vCPUs when encryption or handshake rates keep CPU high
High connection counts, large buffers, or several observability agents 2 vCPU, 4 GiB only as a baseline; reserve memory headroom Add RAM when resident memory, buffers, or file-descriptor-related usage approaches the limit
Production high availability Two identical or appropriately sized instances in separate failure domains Add capacity or additional nodes when failover testing or peak traffic exposes a bottleneck

HAProxy Technologies describes the load balancer as “a multi-threaded application.” That makes additional vCPUs useful when the workload can run work in parallel, but it does not make a larger core count automatically faster. The same guide says HAProxy is designed for clustered deployment and scales horizontally, and that several small machines can be more cost-effective than a few large ones. Those statements support starting small, measuring, and adding a second instance for resilience rather than buying one oversized VPS.

What actually determines HAProxy VPS size

CPU work usually sets the first limit

CPU is commonly the first resource to saturate because HAProxy may perform TLS handshakes, ongoing encryption and decryption, compression, ACL evaluation, logging, and protocol parsing. New connections are particularly expensive when clients establish and close sessions frequently. A service with modest bandwidth can still require substantial CPU if it handles a high handshake rate or a complicated ruleset.

Begin with two vCPUs and watch utilization during realistic peaks. A brief burst to high utilization is not automatically a problem; sustained pressure combined with increasing response latency, accept queues, or backend wait time is a scaling signal. Move to four or more vCPUs when the additional parallel capacity removes that pressure. If the provider offers guaranteed or dedicated cores, prefer them for sustained TLS termination and latency-sensitive traffic.

Memory provides headroom, not a throughput guarantee

Four GiB is a sensible baseline for HAProxy, the operating system, metrics, and logs. Memory demand rises with concurrent connections, per-connection buffers, large request or response headers, TLS state, sidecars, and monitoring agents. File descriptors also affect memory use, and the configured maxconn value directly controls the number of concurrent TCP connections HAProxy will admit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not set maxconn to an arbitrary large number simply because RAM is available. Estimate the connection ceiling your traffic requires, verify the operating system and service file-descriptor limits, then leave room for bursts and non-HAProxy processes. If memory approaches the limit, reduce unnecessary buffers or sidecars, lower an unjustified connection ceiling, or move to a larger-RAM plan. A machine that reaches swap is not a healthy safety valve: HAProxy documentation states that the machine must never swap.

Network capacity can invalidate a perfect CPU/RAM match

Check the provider’s transfer allowance, port speed, packet-processing limits, region, and path to both clients and backends. A VPS with enough CPU and RAM can still add latency or drop traffic if its egress allowance is exhausted, its virtual NIC is constrained, or it is geographically distant from the application servers. Measure both directions where your design requires proxying uploads and downloads; a plan advertised with a large transfer quota is not necessarily equivalent to a plan with a faster port or better peering.

Storage matters for logs and recovery operations

HAProxy itself is not usually storage-heavy, but access logs, rotated archives, crash diagnostics, package caches, and monitoring data can fill a small disk. Keep log retention proportional to the disk, ship important logs off the instance, and reserve space for an update or rollback. Disk performance is less important than CPU and network for forwarding traffic, yet a full filesystem can prevent logging, health checks, or configuration reloads at the worst time.

Shared CPU or dedicated CPU?

When shared CPU is reasonable

Shared CPU plans are lower-cost VPS options intended for workloads that are light or bursty. They can be appropriate for development, a low-volume internal service, a staging environment, or a public endpoint whose TLS and request rates remain comfortably below the observed CPU ceiling. DigitalOcean characterizes shared CPU Droplets as its lowest-cost VPS hosting solution.

The trade-off is contention: the provider may schedule your virtual CPUs alongside other customers. A benchmark that passes during a quiet period may show more jitter when the host is busy. If your objective is merely to forward occasional traffic and a small latency variation is acceptable, that trade-off can be worthwhile. Record the decision so that an unexplained latency change is not mistaken for an HAProxy configuration regression.

When dedicated CPU is the safer default

Choose dedicated CPU when HAProxy terminates production TLS at sustained rates, performs compression or expensive ACL processing, handles many short-lived connections, or sits on a latency-sensitive path. Guaranteed CPU reduces variability and makes capacity planning easier. It does not eliminate the need for load testing: a dedicated two-vCPU instance can still be undersized for a high handshake rate or a large concurrent-connection population.

DigitalOcean’s CPU-Optimized family starts at 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB, which is a direct dedicated-CPU counterpart to the baseline size. Compare the guaranteed CPU, RAM, transfer, and regional availability rather than assuming that a “CPU-optimized” label means unlimited throughput.

How many HAProxy instances are required for high availability?

A single VPS is one failure domain. A host outage, network fault, maintenance event, kernel problem, or accidental firewall change can remove that load balancer even when every backend is healthy. To remove the VPS itself as a single point of failure, deploy at least two HAProxy instances in separate failure domains, such as different availability zones or hosts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the pair

  • Use the same HAProxy configuration and software policy on both nodes, with secrets and certificates managed safely.
  • Place the instances in separate failure domains and, where practical, separate physical or hypervisor hosts.
  • Expose both through a provider-supported failover method, floating or primary IP arrangement, DNS strategy, or anycast design appropriate to your network.
  • Run health checks that test the proxy path and the important backends, not merely whether the VPS responds to ping.
  • Monitor from outside the pair so that a shared monitoring failure cannot hide an outage.
  • Exercise failover deliberately, including certificate renewal, configuration reload, backend loss, and a complete node shutdown.

Two nodes improve availability but do not double capacity automatically. If one node must carry all traffic during failover, size each node for the failover load, not only for the normal split. For example, two 2-vCPU instances that each run at 70 percent during normal operation may leave little room when one takes 100 percent of traffic. Either lower the normal operating point, use larger nodes, or add another instance.

DigitalOcean’s plan documentation distinguishes shared CPU plans from dedicated families and shows that RAM-to-vCPU ratios vary by family. The cited Hetzner cloud documentation confirms that users can create cloud servers, attach primary IPs, and select virtual CPU resources distributed by hypervisors, but it does not publish an HAProxy-specific recommended size. Compare current Hetzner plans only after checking the live regional catalog.

For any provider, compare more than monthly price:

  • Dedicated versus shared CPU and the provider’s stated contention or guarantee.
  • vCPU count, RAM, and the ability to resize without changing regions or IPs.
  • Port speed, transfer allowance, packet limits, IPv4 and IPv6 availability, and failover-IP support.
  • Latency from the VPS region to users and every backend region.
  • Disk size, snapshot and backup behavior, and space for retained or shipped logs.
  • External monitoring options, maintenance practices, and the ease of creating a second instance.
  • Reload behavior, console access, and recovery procedures when the network or operating system is unhealthy.

A repeatable sizing procedure

1. Record the workload before selecting a plan

Measure peak and average concurrent connections, new connections per second, request and response rates, bandwidth in both directions, TLS handshakes per second, protocol mix, compression use, ACL complexity, and log volume. Record the busiest five- and 15-minute windows rather than relying on a daily average. Note whether a failover node must carry all traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Provision the baseline

Create a 2-vCPU, 4-GiB instance in the region closest to the relevant users and backends. Use dedicated CPU when sustained TLS or predictable latency is already a requirement; otherwise, a shared plan can be a cost-conscious hypothesis. Allocate enough disk for the operating system, HAProxy, certificates, temporary files, and your retention policy.

3. Apply safe operating limits

Set maxconn from a measured connection requirement, then align service and operating-system file-descriptor limits. Confirm that the configured ceiling fits available memory and that buffers are not oversized. Disable swap or otherwise ensure the HAProxy host cannot begin swapping under pressure. Keep time synchronization, certificate permissions, and log rotation functional before introducing load.

4. Generate representative traffic

Test the same TLS versions, certificate chain, request sizes, keep-alive behavior, backend latency, connection churn, compression, and ACL paths that production will use. Include a cold-connection test for handshake cost and a keep-alive test for steady forwarding. Test one backend failure and one HAProxy node failure while traffic continues.

5. Observe the limiting resource

Track per-core CPU, total CPU, resident memory, swap activity, open file descriptors, current and rate of connections, queue time, handshake errors, retransmits, bandwidth, disk usage, and backend response time. Averages hide saturation; inspect percentiles and the busiest individual core. Keep a time-stamped record of the traffic generated and the plan used.

6. Change one dimension at a time

If CPU is sustained and latency rises, first test dedicated CPU or more vCPUs. If memory or descriptor pressure appears while CPU remains comfortable, increase RAM or correct the connection and buffer limits. If egress or packet processing is the constraint, move to a plan with a faster interface or a better region rather than adding memory. Repeat the same test after each change.

7. Validate failover capacity

Stop the active node and verify that the surviving node can carry the required traffic without swapping or exceeding its connection and CPU limits. Restore the node, reverse the roles, and repeat. Test monitoring from an independent location and verify that alerts arrive for both a failed node and a failed backend.

Monitoring signals that tell you to resize

Signal Likely cause Action
Sustained high CPU on one or more cores with rising latency TLS, compression, ACLs, logging, or connection churn Use dedicated CPU, add vCPUs, or simplify expensive processing; retest
Memory steadily approaches the VPS limit Too many connections, large buffers, sidecars, or log agents Review maxconn, buffers, and agents; add RAM if demand is legitimate
File-descriptor exhaustion or accept failures OS/service limits below the intended connection ceiling Align limits with the measured connection target and available memory
Swap activity Insufficient memory or an operating-system configuration that permits swapping Treat as an incident; eliminate swap use and correct memory sizing
Bandwidth or packet drops despite spare CPU Port, transfer, provider, or regional network constraint Change network tier, region, or provider; adding RAM will not fix it
Failover node cannot sustain all traffic Nodes sized only for normal split traffic Increase each node or add capacity so one-node operation is safe

Do not define a resize trigger as “CPU above a particular percentage” in isolation. The meaningful event is resource pressure that affects user-visible latency, errors, queueing, or failover safety for the duration and traffic pattern you care about.

Common sizing mistakes and recovery steps

Buying RAM while CPU is the bottleneck

More memory cannot accelerate TLS handshakes or compression when the cores are saturated. Confirm the limiting metric first. Move to dedicated CPU or more vCPUs, then rerun the identical workload.

Using a large maxconn value as a capacity plan

A high connection ceiling can consume memory and file descriptors long before the network is full. Derive the limit from observed concurrency, reserve burst headroom, and verify both HAProxy and operating-system limits.

Assuming a shared plan behaves like a dedicated plan

Shared CPU can be economical but may have more performance variation. If a production test shows latency jitter at the same request rate, move to dedicated CPU before changing application timeouts or adding retries that could increase load.

Putting both nodes in one failure domain

Two VPS instances on the same host or zone can fail together. Relocate one node to a separate failure domain and test the provider’s actual failover mechanism, including IP movement and health-check timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allowing swap to hide undersizing

Swap may make memory graphs look less alarming while adding severe latency. HAProxy’s guidance is that the machine must never swap. Remove swap from the design and size RAM for peak connections, buffers, and agents.

Trusting a vendor throughput number

No single authoritative figure applies to every HAProxy VPS. Results vary with processor, network interface, operating-system tuning, traffic, and configuration. A provider example can establish price and resources, but only a representative benchmark can establish your capacity.

Choosing a final configuration

For a modest, mostly keep-alive HTTP or TCP service, deploy two 2-vCPU/4-GiB nodes and measure. Use dedicated CPU if the service terminates TLS continuously or has strict latency objectives. Increase to four or more vCPUs when CPU pressure remains after configuration review. Increase RAM when legitimate concurrent connections, buffers, or observability components consume the available headroom. Change network tier or region when bandwidth, packet processing, or backend latency is the constraint.

Keep the two-node design even after scaling vertically. HAProxy’s horizontal scaling model means another appropriately sized instance can improve both capacity and availability, while an oversized single VPS still leaves a single failure domain. Re-run the benchmark after major certificate, cipher, compression, ACL, logging, kernel, or provider changes.
