For most first-time buyers in the US in 2022, Meta Quest 2 was the easiest VR headset to recommend: it worked without a gaming PC, was portable, and could also connect to a PC for VR games. PC enthusiasts had stronger reasons to choose Valve Index, HP Reverb G2, or HTC Vive Pro 2, while Pico 4 was a notable option in countries where it was officially sold. The original PlayStation VR still made sense for some PS4 and PS5 owners, especially at a discounted or used price.
There was no single best headset for every player. The right choice depended on the games you wanted, the hardware you already owned, and whether you valued convenience, visual detail, tracking, or a particular platform’s library.
Quick recommendations
| Headset | Best fit | Why choose it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 2 | Most beginners, casual play, fitness | Standalone, portable, broad software library, optional PC VR | Comfort and battery limitations; standalone graphics are below a gaming PC |
| Valve Index | Premium PC VR | Strong tracking, controllers, audio, and refresh-rate options | Requires a gaming PC, base stations, a wired setup, and a substantial budget |
| HP Reverb G2 | Flight and driving simulation | 2160×2160 resolution per eye and no external tracking stations | Controller tracking has blind spots; high resolution demands a capable PC |
| HTC Vive Pro 2 | High-end PC VR enthusiasts | High resolution, 120-degree field of view, and SteamVR accessory compatibility | Cost, setup complexity, and PC demands |
| Pico 4 | Buyers in supported markets seeking standalone VR | Newer design, pancake optics, and improved balance | Availability and software ecosystem varied by country |
| Original PlayStation VR | Existing PS4 or PS5 owners | Access to the original PlayStation VR library | Older display and tracking system; requires PlayStation hardware and accessories |
These are use-case recommendations, not a ranking by panel specifications. A high-resolution headset may be the wrong choice if your PC cannot render its games smoothly, its tracking does not suit your play style, or its software library lacks the games you want.
Choose by platform and total setup
Standalone and hybrid headsets
A standalone headset includes its own processor, storage, battery, tracking cameras, and operating system. Quest 2 and Pico 4 could run games without a computer. Both could also be used for PC VR through a wired or wireless connection, although streaming performance depended on the network, software, and PC.

Standalone is the simplest way to begin: there are no external tracking stations to place, and you can move the headset between rooms. The trade-off is that its built-in mobile-class hardware cannot deliver the same graphics as a capable gaming PC.
PC VR
Index, Reverb G2, and Vive Pro 2 depend on a gaming PC to render VR. PC VR opens access to demanding simulation games, mods, and SteamVR software, and can provide more visual detail. It also means checking PC compatibility, arranging cables or a reliable wireless setup, and troubleshooting both the headset and computer. A demanding game, high resolution, or high refresh rate can exceed a GPU’s capacity.
Some PC VR systems also need external base stations. They add hardware and require suitable placement, but provide tracking that does not depend on cameras mounted on the headset seeing the controllers.
Console VR
The original PlayStation VR requires a compatible PlayStation and the necessary camera equipment. On PS5, Sony documents use of the PS4 camera and an adapter process on its PS VR setup page. Its appeal in 2022 was access to its existing game library, not modern display or tracking specifications.

Compare complete setups rather than headline headset prices. Depending on the model, the real cost can include a gaming PC, controllers, base stations, a cable or better Wi-Fi, games, prescription inserts, a more suitable strap, or a replacement facial interface. For example, Valve’s US store listed the complete Index kit at $999, including the headset, controllers, and base stations; some other bundles required base stations to be purchased separately. Check the exact bundle contents on Valve’s Index store page.

Meta Quest 2: best first headset for most people
Quest 2 combined standalone play with optional PC VR, so a new owner could start without a gaming PC and later connect to one. Its inside-out tracking used cameras on the headset rather than separately installed room sensors. That made it portable and comparatively easy to set up, share, and use for fitness, social, and room-scale games.
Meta raised Quest 2’s price in July 2022, so a price seen earlier that year should not be treated as the year’s unchanged price. The 2022 Quest 2 and Pico 4 comparison discusses the price change. The recommendation here is about fit, not a claim that the headset remained at its earlier launch price.
What to consider before buying
- Comfort: The stock strap was a common compromise. If you expect long sessions, consider whether a different strap would improve fit; head shape and pressure preferences vary.
- Battery: Standalone play is constrained by the headset’s battery, unlike a PC headset powered through its connection. Plan breaks and charging around your sessions.
- PC streaming: Wired or wireless PC VR is an option, not a guaranteed substitute for a dedicated PC headset. Wireless results depend on router placement, Wi-Fi congestion, whether the PC uses Ethernet, bitrate, and available GPU headroom. Compression can affect the image.
- Storage: Choose enough capacity for the games you intend to keep installed. The right amount depends on your library and habits.
- Account and platform: Consider the platform’s account requirements, privacy choices, software catalogue, and the possibility of being tied to its ecosystem.
For fitness or shared household use, check that there is clear floor space and suitable room lighting. Sweat, fogging, and facial-interface hygiene matter when a headset is used often or passed between people. A replaceable interface or hygiene cover can be useful, but is not an automatic requirement. Casting the view to a phone or TV can help another person follow what the player sees.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsValve Index: premium PC VR for tracking and controllers
Index was a strong 2022 choice for PC owners who prioritized room-scale tracking, high refresh rates, a wide field of view, audio, and the Index Controllers. Its appeal was the complete interaction experience, not a claim to the highest panel resolution. The headset used SteamVR base stations, so the room needed appropriate station placement and a PC powerful enough for the games and settings selected.
Valve listed the complete kit at $999 in the US. Bundle contents matter: a headset-and-controller package may not include base stations. Buyers should verify exactly what is included before comparing prices, and account for a compatible gaming PC if they do not already own one.

Index is a poor fit for someone seeking a simple, portable first headset or who cannot place tracking stations and manage a cable. For a PC VR buyer who values controllers and reliable room-scale tracking, those requirements may be worth the effort.
HP Reverb G2: sharp visuals for seated simulation
HP specified LCD panels at 2160×2160 pixels per eye, 90 Hz operation, four cameras, and a 114-degree field of view for Reverb G2. Those characteristics made it an appealing PC headset for flight simulation, driving simulation, and other seated games where cockpit details matter. Its inside-out tracking avoided the need for external base stations.

The compromise was controller coverage: tracking could be less robust than SteamVR lighthouse systems when controllers moved outside the headset cameras’ view. That matters more in fast room-scale games than when a player uses a wheel, HOTAS, or other physical controls. HP’s support specifications provide compatibility guidance, including GPU examples; do not assume every gaming PC can run it at full resolution and performance.
Resolution is only part of perceived clarity. Lens sweet spot, glare, eye position, IPD, rendering settings, and graphics-card performance all influence what you see. Reverb G2 is best considered by sim players who can provide the PC performance it needs and do not depend on broad controller tracking.
HTC Vive Pro 2: high-end PC VR with a wide field of view
HTC described Vive Pro 2 as a “5K” headset and specified a 120-degree field of view, 90/120 Hz refresh support, SteamVR compatibility, and support for accessories including Vive trackers and Index controllers. “5K” is HTC’s product-positioning language; it should not be mistaken for a guarantee of perceived clarity or smooth performance in every game. The HTC 2022 annual report outlines its specifications and compatibility.

It suited enthusiasts, simulation users, or owners of existing SteamVR base stations and accessories who could justify a more involved setup. As with Index, check whether a price is for the headset alone or a complete system: controllers and tracking hardware can change the total substantially. High resolution and refresh rates also put demands on the PC.
For someone without a powerful PC or existing SteamVR equipment, Vive Pro 2’s capabilities can be outweighed by the cost and setup. Its specifications are most useful when the rest of the system can support them.
Pico 4: a regional standalone alternative
Pico 4 was an important alternative to Quest 2 in markets where it was officially sold. Its newer standalone design used pancake optics and was noted for balance and visual clarity. But availability, warranty and support, account services, software catalogue, and PC-streaming experience differed by country. Check that the headset is officially supported where you live and that its store has the games you want before choosing it over Quest 2.
For a comparison of the two platforms, see TechRadar’s Pico 4 review and its Pico 4 versus Quest 2 comparison. Neither newer optics nor a better-balanced design automatically makes Pico 4 the right choice if the regional library or services do not suit you.

Original PS VR remained worth considering for PS4 or PS5 owners who wanted its software catalogue and found a discounted or complete used bundle. Sony’s specifications list a 1920×1080 total OLED display, 90/120 Hz modes, approximately 100 degrees of field of view, and a headset weight of roughly 600 g. These are dated specifications compared with the newer standalone and PC headsets in this guide. See Sony’s PS VR technical specifications.

Should you wait for PlayStation VR2?
Not if you needed a headset available during most of 2022: PS VR2 was announced on January 4, 2022, but Sony scheduled its launch for February 22, 2023. Sony announced a US MSRP of $549.99 in November 2022. It belonged on a “wait or buy now” list, not among headsets available to try in 2022. See Sony’s January announcement and November launch and price announcement.
Fit, tracking, and image quality: what specifications leave out
Image quality depends on more than resolution
For panel sharpness, Reverb G2’s 2160×2160-per-eye specification stood out. Vive Pro 2 emphasized a wider field of view and refresh-rate flexibility. Index could feel more immersive to players who valued its refresh rate, field of view, audio, and controllers. Pico 4’s pancake optics and balance made it notable where available. These are different strengths, not interchangeable definitions of “best image quality.”
Lens design, sweet spot, glare, binocular overlap, IPD adjustment, rendering resolution, and PC performance can all alter perceived clarity. A powerful headset can still look poor if the eyes sit outside its optical sweet spot or the PC cannot render the image well.
Tracking depends on coverage and setup
- Index and Vive Pro 2 with SteamVR base stations: A strong choice for consistent room-scale and accessory tracking, provided stations are positioned correctly and have the required line of sight.
- Quest 2 and Pico 4: Convenient camera-based tracking that is generally sufficient for mainstream games. Cameras may lose sight of controllers behind the body, close to the headset, or outside their field of view.
- Reverb G2: Inside-out setup without stations, but controller coverage has more blind spots than lighthouse tracking.
- Original PS VR: Functional for its library, but its camera-based tracking and controller system are older.
Inside-out tracking is not inherently poor, and external tracking is not automatically trouble-free. Dim rooms, reflective or visually confusing surfaces, blocked sensors, or poorly placed base stations can disrupt tracking.
Fit glasses, IPD, and session comfort
Adjustable or configurable optical settings help, but a listed IPD range cannot guarantee a comfortable fit for every face. Lens-to-eye distance affects field of view and clarity, and glasses wearers should check spacer compatibility or prescription-lens options. If your IPD is near a headset’s adjustment limit, trying it before purchase is useful where possible. HP, HTC, and Sony provide product details in their HP announcement, HTC annual report, and Sony specifications.
Weight alone does not determine comfort. Balance, strap pressure, facial-interface material, heat, sweat, glasses clearance, and how the headset interacts with hair or facial hair can all matter. If buying used, inspect lenses for scratches, check for dead pixels and controller drift, test cables, and confirm the battery condition of a standalone headset. For older or discontinued models, also check accessory availability and whether the bundle includes required equipment.
Choose by what you play and own
- No gaming PC; first headset, fitness, or casual play: Choose Quest 2 for its standalone convenience and broad consumer library.
- Strong gaming PC; tracking and controllers are priorities: Choose Index if you can accommodate its wired setup and base stations.
- PC simulation and cockpit detail: Choose Reverb G2 if your PC can drive its resolution and you mainly use physical controls.
- Existing SteamVR base stations, accessories, and high-end budget: Consider Vive Pro 2 for its field of view and high-resolution focus.
- Supported country and interest in standalone pancake optics: Compare Pico 4’s local catalogue and services against Quest 2 before buying.
- Existing PlayStation owner seeking the original PS VR library cheaply: Consider original PS VR only after checking bundle completeness and camera requirements.
Before committing, match the headset to the games you actually intend to play, verify your PC or console requirements, and test fit if you can. In 2022, Quest 2 was the practical starting point for most people; the alternatives earned their place when a buyer’s platform, simulation needs, tracking priorities, or regional availability made a more specialized system worthwhile.
