Use the cloud provider’s resumable or multipart upload tool—usually its own command-line or managed transfer client—and keep the original files until you have verified the upload. For a 100 GB library, this is safer than relying on one long, fragile transfer. First check whether your destination needs raw files or video that has already been encoded and packaged for playback: uploading to storage does not by itself create a streaming-ready video service.
Choose a transfer that can recover from interruptions
Prefer the transfer tool supported by the cloud storage provider that will hold the library. For a directory containing many files, a provider CLI or managed client can retry failed files and preserve completed work. Keep a stable inventory of filenames and paths so you can compare what was sent with what arrived.
- Google Cloud Storage: Google recommends resumable uploads for large files. Its
gcloud storage cpandgcloud storage rsynccommands use resumable uploads; if a transfer is interrupted, rerunning the same command can resume it. Resumable sessions can remain active for up to one week. For a multi-file resume, Google recommends--no-clobberto avoid uploading completed files again. See Google Cloud’s resumable upload guidance and its upload-method guidance. - Amazon S3: Multipart upload splits an object into parts that can be transferred independently. If a part fails, it can be retransmitted without restarting the others. AWS recommends considering multipart uploads for objects around 100 MB or larger. See AWS’s multipart upload documentation.
Use the tool’s default retry, resume, and parallel-transfer behavior first. Tuning chunk sizes or parallelism without measuring can affect speed, memory use, request counts, and recovery behavior. A provider’s transfer guidance explains available approaches and trade-offs; the simplest good default for ordinary copying is generally its own client.
Estimate how long 100 GB will take
Use sustained upload speed—not the advertised download rate—to estimate the transfer. A speed test is a rough guide; a short trial upload of representative files is better because it includes the effects of your source drive, connection, and transfer tool. The following are idealized arithmetic estimates for 100 GB, treated as about 800 gigabits, before overhead. They are not benchmarks or promised completion times.

Actual elapsed time can be materially longer. Wi-Fi interference, other household traffic, source-disk read speed, protocol overhead, and changing network conditions all reduce effective throughput. Leave time for retries and verification rather than scheduling cleanup around the idealized estimate.
Upload safely: inventory, transfer, verify
- Choose the destination first. Select the storage region and service that the intended streaming platform or CDN can use as an origin. Consider viewer geography, permissions, access controls, and ongoing storage and delivery costs. For example, Google Media CDN documents cloud storage, other cloud object stores, and publicly reachable HTTP origins as origin options; see Google Media CDN origin documentation.
- Make an inventory. Record expected paths, file counts, and total size. Where practical, record checksums before transfer. Keep this list stable while the upload is running.
- Use the destination provider’s resumable or multipart client. For many files, run its directory-copy or synchronization mode with retries and resume enabled. Preserve the command and logs so you can rerun the transfer and identify failures.
- Keep the source copy. Do not delete or overwrite the local library just because the client reports completion.
- Verify the result. Compare object counts and total bytes with your inventory, review failed-file logs, and compare checksums where supported. AWS supports server-side validation when a full-object checksum is supplied with a multipart upload. Do not assume a multipart ETag is an MD5 checksum. See AWS’s multipart upload documentation.
- Test files and playback. Open representative files from the cloud origin. If the platform has a processing step, test playback after that step finishes. Remove the local copy only when the cloud data is verified and you have decided your backup policy.
Uploading files is not the same as preparing them for streaming
A cloud bucket stores the files you upload, but storage alone may not provide smooth adaptive playback. A video-on-demand workflow commonly encodes and packages a source into segments and manifests, then delivers those outputs through a CDN. AWS describes a typical setup using S3 for storage, MediaConvert for file-based processing, and CloudFront for delivery; see AWS’s video-on-demand guidance. If the library is for adaptive on-demand playback
Before uploading or paying for processing, check the target platform’s supported input formats, required codecs and packaging, player requirements, access controls, and expected audience locations and viewing traffic. Then decide where encoding, origin storage, and CDN delivery belong in the workflow.
If the library is already prepared—or is only an archive
If the files are already encoded and packaged in the format the destination expects, confirm that before processing them again. For a private archive or direct downloads, an encoding and CDN pipeline may be unnecessary. Match the setup to the way people will access the files.

Account for the full lifecycle cost
Storage is only one possible charge. Depending on the chosen provider, region, and workflow, costs can include storage class and retention, upload requests, a transfer service, transcoding or packaging, CDN delivery, and data egress. Google lists per-GB pricing for on-premises transfers with Storage Transfer Service; check the current regional pricing and estimate viewing egress before committing. Compare like with like: include how long the 100 GB will be retained and how much viewers are expected to watch, not just the initial storage charge. The appropriate service and price depend on the provider, region, audience, and access pattern.

When a managed or physical transfer makes sense
Managed bulk transfer
For 100 GB already on a computer with a reliable internet connection, a resumable internet upload is a reasonable starting point. A managed transfer service may be worthwhile for recurring pipelines, movement between storage systems, or centralized operational control. Google describes Storage Transfer Service as a way to move data among cloud and on-premises storage systems; check its current supported routes and per-GB charges for your specific case at Google Storage Transfer Service overview and its pricing page.
Physical transfer
A shipped appliance or extra drive is not inherently necessary for this 100 GB case. Consider physical transfer only if a measured internet route is impractical, the source is removable media that must be staged, or the provider offers a suitable service for your region and volume. Verify availability, supported destination, lead time, and total cost directly before relying on it.
