If you mean the order viewers see during playback, set that order in the platform’s playlist editor after uploading. File names and upload order are not a reliable substitute. To keep the files themselves in sequence when sorted by name, add equal-width numbers before uploading, such as 001 - Intro.mp4, 002 - Lesson.mp4, and 003 - Wrap-up.mp4.
First, decide which order you need
“Playlist order” can mean three different things: the order of files in a computer folder, the order assets appear in a service’s library, or the playback sequence in a playlist. They use different controls.

Keep filenames in order before uploading
- Choose the sequence. Decide the intended order before renaming or uploading.
- Add zero-padded prefixes. Use the same number of digits throughout:
001,002, …,010. This makes ordinary alphabetical sorting follow the numeric sequence. - Keep recognizable titles. Put a short number first, followed by a useful title, such as
010 - Final Match.mp4. - Sort the folder by name and check it. Confirm the local files appear in the desired sequence before selecting the batch.
This is a file-management convention, not an instruction to the video platform. The cited YouTube upload guidance allows you to add a video to an existing playlist or create a playlist, while separate YouTube help explains how to reorder playlist items. It does not establish that filenames, bulk selection order, or upload completion order automatically determines playlist position. YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos
Set playback order on YouTube after bulk uploading
- Add the uploaded videos to the intended playlist. You can associate a video with an existing playlist or create a playlist during upload, according to YouTube’s upload instructions.
- Open the playlist itself. Check the sequence in the playlist, rather than relying on the order shown in an upload queue or library.
- Drag videos into position. YouTube Help’s computer instructions say to drag a video or Short up or down to reorder the playlist. YouTube Studio also documents reordering videos by dragging. Edit playlists – Computer · Manage playlists in YouTube Studio – Computer
- Check the final sequence in the playlist. If it is wrong, move the items there; renaming files or videos is not a replacement for changing playlist order.
If the videos are already uploaded, you can correct the playback sequence directly in the playlist editor. Rename only if you also want clearer titles or a more useful name-sorted view.

Bulk-upload and sorting controls on Vimeo
Rename a mobile upload batch
Vimeo’s documented mobile bulk-upload workflow allows you to select several videos, rename them on the confirmation screen, choose a destination folder, and upload. This can help make titles and library organization clearer; it does not establish that those names dictate a playlist’s playback order. Sort the library separately from playback
Vimeo’s library supports sorting by title A to Z or Z to A, dates, duration, and other criteria, and provides bulk actions for selected videos. Those controls organize the library view. Vimeo’s profile-page help discusses a separate surface: manually positioned clips can take precedence over the remaining videos, which are described in the default case as ordered by upload date, newest first. Common ordering problems and fixes
- Numbers sort unexpectedly: Make every prefix the same width. For example, use
001through010, not1through10. - The playlist differs from the folder: Reorder the items in the platform’s playlist editor. Local alphabetical order does not set playback order.
- Renaming did not change playback: That is expected; titles and playlist positions are separate. Move the item in the playlist.
- The library appears correctly sorted, but viewers see another sequence: Verify the playlist or profile surface itself. A library sort is not necessarily the playback order.
- New uploads appear in an unexpected position: Check the playlist after upload and arrange the items manually; do not infer intended sequence from upload timing.
