The safest setup for a scale anime figure is an enclosed, well-fitted case on an interior wall, away from windows, direct sun, heating vents, radiators, hot electronics and busy doorways. Use a case whose acrylic or glass has a stated UV-filtering specification, not merely a clear panel; illuminate it with low-heat LEDs; leave clearance around fragile parts; and remove dust with a soft brush before using a microfiber cloth or plastic-safe cleaner.
Why dust, sunlight and heat damage scale figures
Scale figures combine painted PVC or ABS, clear plastics, thin parts and adhesives. Their damage often starts slowly, so a figure can look fine for months before a change becomes obvious.

Sunlight causes irreversible color changes
Prolonged sunlight can fade paint, create uneven color changes and yellow light-colored materials. The Zenpai Association’s September 6, 2026 guide links sunlight exposure with fading, discoloration and yellowing. HD Toys Japan likewise warns that painted PVC and ABS figures can yellow in sunlight and sag when exposed to heat. A sunbeam crossing only one side of a figure can leave that side noticeably different from the shaded side.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDirect sun is therefore the avoidable risk to eliminate first. Curtains, blinds or a UV-blocking window film can reduce exposure, but they are a backup for a poor location, not a reason to let a figure sit in a daily sunbeam.

Dust is abrasive and attracts more grime
Dust settles on hair sculpting, weapons, joints and textured bases. Rubbing a dry cloth over dusty plastic can drag grit across a surface, producing fine scratches or pushing particles into recesses. Open shelves also expose figures to cooking residue, carpet fibers, pet hair and accidental contact. Enclosures mainly solve dust and handling; they do not make a figure maintenance-free.
Heat and humidity accelerate problems
Heat can soften or deform long, thin PVC parts and may make a leaning pose worse. Humidity can affect labels, cardboard packaging and some display materials. Impact Visual Arts advises keeping acrylic artwork below 80°F (about 27°C) and around or below 60% relative humidity, warning that heat, direct sun or prolonged humidity can warp acrylic. Those figures are acrylic-artwork care guidance, not a universal storage standard for every anime figure, but they are useful warning thresholds when choosing a location.
Choose the right display format
Match the enclosure to collection size, room conditions and how often you handle the figures. The table describes the practical trade-offs.
| Setup | Dust protection | UV strategy | Best use | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open shelf | Lowest; requires frequent gentle dusting | Depends on room placement, curtains or window film | Large collections that need easy access | Highest exposure to dust, bumps and handling |
| Glass-door cabinet | Moderate to high, depending on door and panel seals | Ordinary glass is not a guaranteed UV specification; add UV film or UV-rated glazing for bright rooms | Several figures in a room-scale display | Large footprint; check shelf load, door gaps and stability |
| Acrylic case or cube | High for one figure or a small group | Select a product that explicitly states UV filtering; clear acrylic alone is insufficient | Desk displays and valuable individual figures | Can scratch and build static; ammonia cleaners can damage it; dimensions and ventilation must fit the figure |
| UV-rated custom case | Highest when panels and seals fit well | Documented UV-filtering acrylic or glass | Premium, unusually large or window-adjacent displays | Higher cost and fewer standard sizes |
When an open shelf is acceptable
An open shelf can work in a dim, low-dust room when you can inspect and clean it regularly. Keep it on an interior wall, not beside a window, vent or doorway. Use stable shelves with enough depth for the base and any overhanging weapon or hair part. Consider an open shelf a display-and-maintenance arrangement, not a protective enclosure.

When to choose glass doors
A glass-door cabinet is practical for multiple figures, but panel material alone does not establish UV protection. Ask for the glazing’s UV-transmission or UV-filtering specification. If it is not stated, treat it as ordinary glass and control sunlight with placement, curtains or a tested UV-blocking film. Also verify the cabinet’s shelf load, door alignment and gaps where dust can enter.
When acrylic is the better choice
Acrylic cubes are compact and light, making them useful for a single high-value figure. Their weaknesses are scratches, static and chemical sensitivity. Select a case that states its UV performance, provides enough internal clearance and has a stable base. Do not assume a transparent panel blocks UV simply because it looks substantial.
Plan the safest location before assembling the display
- Pick an interior wall. An interior location generally receives less solar heat than a window wall. Avoid direct sun even if it reaches the case for only part of the day.
- Measure the complete figure. Include the base, raised hand, hair tips, weapons and any alternate parts. Add clearance above and around fragile projections so they do not touch the case or a neighboring figure.
- Move away from heat sources. Do not place the case over a game console, computer exhaust, amplifier, radiator or heating vent. Heat from electronics can accumulate under a shelf even when the room feels comfortable.
- Reduce bump risk. Keep the display out of door swings, narrow walkways and places where a chair, vacuum or controller can strike it. A level, rigid surface is more important than a visually prominent one.
- Check the room pattern. Cooking, smoking, pets, carpet and open windows increase the cleaning burden. In a dusty room, an enclosed case pays for itself in reduced handling.
Verify UV protection instead of guessing
Ultraviolet light is the part of the spectrum most damaging to works of art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art explains that UV can be effectively filtered with UV-absorbing plastic used for glazing and display cases. That principle applies to figure displays, but the label must be specific.

- A statement that the acrylic or glass filters UV, with a stated rating, transmission figure or wavelength range.
- The panel material and thickness, rather than only phrases such as “crystal clear” or “premium transparent.”
- Whether the rating applies to every panel, including doors and top sections.
- Dimensions, ventilation and load capacity that match the figure and base.
- Instructions for cleaning and whether the surface has a coating that changes which products are safe.
Display Armour cautions that UV performance depends on the material’s resistance and the case design, not on transparency alone. A case with an unprotected rear or a large door gap can still admit light and dust. Treat an unstated UV claim as unverified.

What UV protection cannot do
UV-filtering glazing does not make direct sun harmless. Visible light and solar heat can still contribute to fading and softening, and a bright window can heat a small enclosure quickly. Keep the case out of sunbeams even after choosing UV-rated panels.
Assemble the display without stressing the figure
- Inspect the base and support points. Confirm that the peg is fully seated and that the base does not rock. Use the supplied peg or support for heavy overhangs such as large weapons, wings or hair sections.
- Level the shelf or case. A slight tilt can turn a stable pose into a gradual lean. Use the furniture’s adjustment feet or a suitable, non-compressible shim rather than forcing the figure to stand crooked.
- Keep figures separate. Do not let hair, weapons, capes or translucent effects touch another figure. Contact can rub paint, transfer pressure and make removal dangerous.
- Leave service clearance. Allow room to remove the figure without catching a sword, antenna or hair tip on the door. Crowding makes routine cleaning more likely to cause damage.
- Check the stated load limit. Add the weight of every figure, base and shelf accessory. A case that holds one heavy statue may not safely hold a full row.
- Close and test the doors. Confirm that panels sit flush, magnets or latches engage and no part touches a moving door. Recheck after the case has settled on the furniture.
Use low-heat lighting and sensible spacing
Low-heat LED cabinet lights are preferable to halogen. LEDs reduce heat near PVC and acrylic, but they are not a license to place lights against a figure or leave them on continuously. Mount them where the light reaches the display without touching hair, translucent parts or the case roof.
Keep enough space for air movement around the light and the figure. Hide wiring so it cannot snag a base when the cabinet is opened. If a case becomes warm to the touch, relocate the light or shorten its operating period; do not wait for visible warping.

Routine frequency
Inspect displays weekly or every two weeks. Open shelves normally need cleaning at the shorter end of that range, while a well-sealed case may need only an exterior wipe and occasional interior dusting. Increase frequency for homes with pets, carpet, cooking or construction dust. AKiBATO recommends an enclosed case and a soft brush or carefully controlled air for maintenance.

Safe cleaning sequence
- Turn off lights and stabilize the display. Unplug cabinet lighting if your hands will work near its wiring.
- Remove loose dust first. Use a clean, soft makeup-style brush or feather duster. Work from high areas downward, using light strokes rather than pressing dust into the paint.
- Use air cautiously. If you use air, hold the source back and use gentle, controlled bursts. Do not blast joints, decals or tiny accessories, and do not allow a can to spray liquid propellant.
- Inspect before wiping. Look for grit, a loose peg, a leaning base or a part that has begun touching the case.
- Clean the case separately. Wipe acrylic with a soft microfiber cloth and a cleaner explicitly compatible with acrylic or plastic. Use a separate clean cloth for the figure and the panels.
- Finish with a dry inspection. Check for streaks, static-attracted fibers and any newly stressed part before closing the case.
Products and methods to avoid
Never use ammonia-based glass cleaner or ordinary glass cleaner on acrylic. Impact Visual Arts warns that ammonia can fog and potentially damage acrylic. Avoid paper towels, rough sponges, abrasive polishing compounds and household solvents unless the case manufacturer expressly approves them. Do not spray liquid directly onto a figure, base, seam or electrical component.
Control humidity and monitor slow changes
Keep the display in a dry, stable room rather than beside a humidifier, bathroom, kitchen steam or a leaky window. A small room hygrometer can reveal conditions that are not obvious from comfort alone. The approximately 60% relative-humidity guidance from Impact Visual Arts concerns acrylic artwork; use it as a conservative reference for the case environment, not as a guaranteed figure-preservation limit.
Once a month, compare the figure with an earlier photograph under similar lighting. Look for yellowing, uneven fading, a leaning torso, softened weapon tips, cloudy acrylic, loose joints or a base that has begun to deform. Early detection lets you move the display before a small problem becomes permanent.

Dust returns immediately
Check door seals, rear openings, cable holes and the room’s dust sources. Move the case away from carpet, open windows and cooking areas; add a properly fitted panel or seal a non-ventilation gap with a material approved for the case. Do not seal a case so tightly that heat from lighting has nowhere to escape.

Acrylic looks cloudy or scratched
Stop using glass cleaner, ammonia, paper towels or abrasive products. Remove loose grit with a brush, then use only a plastic-compatible cleaner and microfiber cloth. A chemical haze or deep scratch may not be reversible; replacing a panel is safer than aggressive polishing near a figure.
A figure begins to lean
Turn off nearby heat, verify that the shelf is level and reseat the supplied peg or base connection. Check whether a long part is pressing against the case or another figure. If the pose is no longer stable, support it according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than improvising adhesive or wire on a visible painted surface.
Paint is fading on one side
Move the case immediately to an interior wall and block the window with curtains or a tested UV film. Photograph the figure for your records and keep future displays out of direct sun. UV-filtering panels can reduce further exposure but cannot restore color already lost.
The case becomes hot
Switch off the lights, move the case away from vents and heat-emitting electronics, and improve clearance around the fixture. Replace halogen lighting with low-heat LEDs. Reassess the room during its warmest period, not only in the morning.
Buying checklist for a protective case
- UV specification: documented UV filtering for the actual panel material; “clear” alone does not qualify.
- Internal dimensions: enough room for the figure, base, overhangs and cleaning access.
- Fit and seals: flush doors or panels with minimal dust paths, without eliminating necessary ventilation.
- Load capacity: a stated limit for each shelf and the whole cabinet.
- Material care: cleaning instructions that identify acrylic-safe products and prohibited chemicals.
- Stability: a rigid base, level adjustment and a way to secure a tall cabinet against tipping.
- Lighting: low-heat LED compatibility and safe cable routing.
- Replacement parts: availability of panels, hinges, magnets or seals if a scratch or break occurs.
For a search such as “UV protected acrylic display case for anime figures,” verify the listing’s UV rating, dimensions, ventilation and load capacity rather than relying on the search phrase.
A practical maintenance schedule
| When | Action | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly to biweekly | Inspect dust; brush open displays; dust the figure and wipe the exterior of a case | New grit, pet hair, fingerprints and door gaps |
| Every placement change | Re-level the base and reposition supports | Leaning, touching parts, unsupported overhangs and case clearance |
| Monthly | Inspect under consistent lighting and check room conditions | Fading, yellowing, softened parts, cloudy acrylic and humidity or heat trends |
| Seasonally or after moving furniture | Reassess sunlight and heat paths | Changed sun angles, blocked vents, new electronics and furniture stability |
Bottom line for collectors
Put scale figures in a fitted enclosure on an interior wall, keep every direct sunbeam off them, and treat UV filtering as a specification to verify rather than an assumption. Use low-heat LEDs, maintain clearance and stable supports, remove dust with a soft brush before wiping, and reserve plastic-safe cleaner and microfiber for acrylic panels. This combination addresses the main avoidable causes of fading, yellowing, warping, scratches and accidental contact without relying on a single material or gadget to solve every risk.
