You can play current, console-quality games without purchasing a traditional console. The practical choices are cloud streaming from an existing screen, installing games on a Windows laptop or desktop, or using a Windows gaming handheld. Cloud services remove the need for powerful local hardware but require a dependable internet connection; Windows computers and handhelds cost more up front but can keep running games when you are offline.
For a managed, console-like library, start with Xbox Cloud Gaming. For a PC library you already own, GeForce NOW is usually the more natural fit. Amazon Luna is designed around streaming from Amazon Web Services to devices you already have. A Windows computer or handheld is the flexible option when you want local installations as well as access to cloud catalogs.

What playing without a console actually means
“Without a console” covers two different arrangements. In cloud gaming, the game runs on a remote server and your device receives an interactive video stream while sending your controller inputs back to that server. Your phone, tablet, television, browser-capable computer or streaming device acts as the screen and control endpoint. You do not need a console-class processor or graphics card, but your connection must remain stable during play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn local Windows gaming, the game is installed and rendered on your own laptop, desktop or handheld. A Windows device can also open the Xbox PC app and cloud services, so it can combine local and streamed games. This distinction matters when comparing cost, portability, offline use, ownership and troubleshooting.

There is no single universal “cheapest” route. If you already own a suitable phone, television or computer, a cloud subscription and a compatible controller may be the smallest initial purchase. If you already own PC games, a service that streams those entitlements can avoid buying them again. If you expect to play often away from reliable internet, local Windows hardware may be better value despite its higher initial cost.
The four practical routes
| Route | What you receive | Game access model | Typical device reach | Offline play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | A managed console-style cloud catalog | Included games depend on the applicable Game Pass plan, region and current catalog | Windows PCs; Apple and Android phones and tablets; selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA TVs; Amazon Fire TV; selected Meta Quest headsets | No; the game is streamed |
| GeForce NOW | Remote PC graphics hardware for supported titles | Connects supported stores, so you generally stream games you already own | PCs, Macs, phones, iPads, TVs and handhelds, subject to system requirements | No for streamed sessions; local copies remain separate |
| Amazon Luna | Games streamed from Amazon Web Services | Included games and plan benefits vary by membership, country and current offering | Fire TV and other supported screens, including phones | No; the game runs in the cloud |
| Windows laptop, desktop or gaming handheld | Local PC game installation plus PC and cloud apps | Buy or subscribe to games and run them on hardware that meets their requirements | Windows desktops, laptops and handheld PCs | Often, when the game and launcher support offline use |
Exact subscription prices, playtime allowances, supported countries and catalogs change. Check the service’s current terms for your location before paying; no single price or catalog should be treated as global or permanent.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: the closest substitute for a console catalog
Xbox describes Xbox Cloud Gaming as a way to play hundreds of console games on devices you already have. The listed device categories include Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA televisions, Amazon Fire TV and selected Meta Quest headsets. Support is not identical across every model or country, so confirm that your exact screen and region are eligible.

Games, features and plan terms can change.
Why choose Xbox Cloud Gaming
- You want one managed library instead of buying a console and individual hardware accessories.
- You already own a phone, tablet, PC, compatible television, Fire TV device or supported headset.
- You prefer console-style discovery and account management rather than linking several PC storefronts.
- You want to move between a larger screen and a mobile device without installing a local copy.
What to check first
- Confirm that Xbox Cloud Gaming is offered in your country and that your intended device category is supported there.
- Check the current Game Pass plan, catalog and any playtime or account requirements before subscribing.
- Sign in with the account that holds the relevant subscription and test a free or already-included title before buying accessories.
- Use a physical controller for action, racing, sports and first-person games unless the individual title specifically provides comfortable touch controls.
Touch controls can be useful for short sessions or games designed around them, but virtual buttons cover part of a small phone display and provide less tactile feedback than a controller. A Bluetooth or USB-C controller is generally the safer purchase for modern three-dimensional games.
GeForce NOW: stream a PC library you already own
GeForce NOW takes a different approach from an all-you-can-play console catalog. NVIDIA says members can connect Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG, Epic Games Store, Steam and Xbox accounts, then stream supported games they already own through those stores. The game must be supported by the service and you must possess the applicable store entitlement; a GeForce NOW membership does not automatically grant every PC game.
When it is the better fit
- You have accumulated PC games in one or more supported stores but do not own a gaming desktop.
- You want to keep your existing store ownership, saves and launcher relationships where supported.
- You use a Mac, lower-powered PC, phone, iPad, television or handheld that cannot render the game locally.
- You are comfortable checking compatibility title by title before expecting a game to work.
Device and control considerations
NVIDIA lists support for PCs, Macs, phones, iPads, TVs and handhelds, subject to each device’s requirements. Its requirements information recommends a USB gaming mouse on supported PC setups. NVIDIA also says the Android virtual gamepad is not recommended for long-term gameplay, which is a practical reason to use a physical controller for extended sessions.

Streaming over a phone’s mobile data plan can consume data quickly. If you plan to play away from Wi-Fi, check your carrier’s allowance and throttling policy first. A connection that is adequate for browsing may still produce distracting interruptions if it fluctuates while a game is streaming.
A reliable first-session setup
- Check that the game appears on GeForce NOW’s supported-games list and identify the store account that owns it.
- Install the GeForce NOW app or use the supported client on your chosen screen.
- Connect the relevant store accounts and complete any sign-in or two-factor prompts.
- Pair a controller; use a mouse and keyboard when the game and device make that combination more practical.
- Launch the title, allow the store launcher to authenticate, and verify that your expected save data is present.
Amazon Luna: cloud gaming built around screens you already use
Amazon describes Luna as a service that streams games from Amazon Web Services cloud servers instead of requiring a gaming console or PC. The emphasis is convenience: the game is delivered to a supported screen, while the remote infrastructure handles rendering.
Amazon also says users can switch between screens such as Fire TV and a mobile phone without additional pairing or configuration changes. That can suit households where the television is shared or where a session needs to move from a living room to a smaller screen.
Who should consider Luna
- People already using Fire TV or other supported Amazon-connected screens.
- Prime members or Amazon customers who want to investigate included benefits before purchasing dedicated hardware.
- Households that value moving a session between a television and phone.
- Players who accept a changing catalog and membership structure in exchange for minimal local hardware.
Included games, Prime benefits, supported countries and plan details can change. Verify the current offering for your country and account type rather than assuming that a title or benefit mentioned in an older announcement is still available.
Windows laptops, desktops and gaming handhelds: local play without a console
Windows 11 supports gaming on high-performance desktops, portable laptops and handheld PCs. Microsoft’s Windows gaming overview describes Game Pass as providing a library of hundreds of games across PC, console and supported devices, including cloud gaming, and notes integration with the Xbox PC app and cloud options.
Local play requires a game purchase or subscription and hardware that meets the title’s requirements. Before installing, compare the game’s listed operating-system, processor, graphics, memory and storage requirements with the exact Windows device. Requirements differ substantially between games; a thin laptop that handles one title may struggle with another.
Desktop or laptop
A desktop normally offers the most upgrade flexibility and sustained cooling. A laptop trades some upgradeability for a screen, keyboard and battery. Either can serve as a local game machine and as a gateway to Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW. A laptop is the more convenient choice when you need one computer for work and play; a desktop is easier to keep permanently connected to a larger display and wired network.

Windows gaming handheld
A Windows gaming handheld is a portable PC category, not a traditional console. It can install compatible PC games locally, connect to a monitor or television, and open Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW when streaming is preferable. Its small screen and controls make it more console-like, but you still manage Windows updates, launchers, storage and compatibility.

How to choose by your existing equipment
You own only a phone or tablet
Start with Xbox Cloud Gaming or Amazon Luna if the service and catalog are available in your country. GeForce NOW is worth considering if your PC library is in a supported store. Add a phone-sized Bluetooth or USB-C controller before judging the experience; touch controls are title-dependent and often less comfortable for long sessions.
You own a smart TV or Fire TV device
Check whether your exact television model and region support Xbox Cloud Gaming, Luna or another intended service. Confirm Bluetooth or USB controller support on the television or streaming device. A service may be available on one television platform but not another, so do not infer compatibility from a friend’s setup.
You own a Mac but not a gaming PC
GeForce NOW can provide a path to supported PC games through its Mac client, provided you own the games in a connected store. Xbox Cloud Gaming can also work through supported Windows or mobile categories, while local Windows-only installations may require a separate Windows device.
You already own Steam, Epic, GOG or other PC games
Check GeForce NOW first because its main advantage is linking supported store entitlements. A title must still be supported, and the relevant launcher account must be available. If many of your games are not supported, a Windows laptop, desktop or handheld gives you broader local compatibility, subject to hardware requirements.
You need to play during unreliable internet access
Favor a Windows laptop, desktop or handheld with games installed locally. Cloud services cannot continue rendering a streamed session when the connection drops. You can still use cloud gaming when online, but local installations provide the more resilient fallback.

Controller and accessory decisions
A controller is not mandatory for every cloud game, but it is the practical default for modern 3D titles. Xbox lists Xbox controllers and verified third-party options including 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone and Sony DualSense.
Phone and tablet
- Bluetooth controllers are flexible across devices but require charging and pairing.
- USB-C controllers avoid wireless pairing and can reduce one source of connection troubleshooting, but they must fit the phone or tablet and its case.
- Clip-on designs keep the display and controls together; verify connector clearance and device compatibility.
Television and Fire TV
Check whether the television or streaming device accepts Bluetooth, USB or only the service’s approved input methods. Pair the controller before launching a game, then test both sticks, triggers and vibration where relevant. A controller that pairs with a phone is not automatically guaranteed to work with every TV app.
Windows PC and handheld
Use the input style that matches the game. A mouse and keyboard can be more practical for strategy and cursor-heavy interfaces, while a controller is usually simpler for platformers, racing and many action games. On a handheld, confirm that the game recognizes its built-in controls before starting a long download.
Internet, data and reliability
Cloud gaming depends on a continuous connection rather than a one-time download. The important qualities are stability, consistent responsiveness and enough capacity for an interactive video stream. A momentary interruption can be more disruptive than a slower but steady connection.
- Prefer a wired connection for a desktop or a strong, uncongested Wi-Fi connection for mobile devices.
- Keep the streaming device close to the wireless access point when possible.
- Pause large downloads and video streams on the same connection during play.
- Watch mobile-data usage carefully; NVIDIA specifically warns that phone streaming can use data quickly.
- Test the service at the time you normally play, because household congestion can vary by hour.

Cloud gaming usually shifts spending from hardware to recurring access. Compare the subscription, any games that are not included, controller, compatible streaming device and internet or mobile-data costs. A service with a large catalog may still require a separate purchase for a particular game.
GeForce NOW adds a different question: do you already own supported PC games? If yes, the service can avoid buying another copy. If no, include the game purchase in the total. Xbox Cloud Gaming and Luna emphasize included libraries, but their catalogs and plan benefits vary by region and time.

Local Windows gaming concentrates more cost in the device. Include the laptop, desktop or handheld, storage, controller and games. It can reduce ongoing dependence on streaming and may continue to work offline, but the device must meet each game’s requirements.
| Cost question | Cloud services | Windows local play |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front hardware | Can be low if you already own a supported screen; a controller may still be needed | Requires a capable laptop, desktop or handheld |
| Recurring access | Subscription terms and catalogs vary by service and region | Optional subscriptions; local games may be purchased individually |
| Game ownership | Xbox Cloud Gaming and Luna emphasize included access; GeForce NOW generally uses supported store ownership | You install games tied to a purchase or subscription on the Windows device |
| Connectivity cost | Continuous internet use; mobile play may consume substantial data | Internet is needed for downloads, updates and some services, but installed games can be more resilient offline |
Troubleshooting common failures
The service or game is unavailable
Confirm your country, account plan, device model and title support. A game can be present in one catalog or store but absent from another. Sign out and back in only after checking those eligibility conditions; repeated logins do not add an unsupported title.
The picture stutters or the session disconnects
Test the same service on a less congested connection, move closer to the router, stop competing downloads and try a wired connection where practical. If the problem follows the account across different networks, check the provider’s service status and plan limitations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The controller pairs but does not control the game
Verify that the controller is connected to the device running the service rather than to a nearby television or phone. Close and reopen the game after pairing, test another supported input mode and check the service’s device-specific requirements. On Android, use a physical controller for long sessions instead of relying on the virtual gamepad NVIDIA does not recommend for extended play.
A PC game launches but performs poorly locally
Compare the device with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements, install current Windows and graphics updates, close unnecessary background programs and lower in-game settings. If the hardware still falls short, try a supported cloud service or choose a less demanding title rather than assuming every Windows device is a gaming PC.
Your save data is missing
Confirm that you signed into the same Xbox, store or game account used previously. Cloud and local versions may use different save systems, and a launcher may need time online to synchronize. Do not delete local saves while investigating; first identify which account and platform contains the expected progress.
A practical decision checklist
- List the screens you already own: phone, tablet, TV, Fire TV device, Mac, Windows PC or handheld.
- Decide whether your priority is an included console-style catalog, access to owned PC games or local offline play.
- Check country, device and title availability for the service you are considering.
- Budget for a physical controller unless your chosen games are specifically comfortable with touch input.
- Assess your home and mobile internet, including data limits and likely household congestion.
- For local Windows play, compare the exact device with each game’s published requirements.
- Test one representative game before committing to additional hardware or a long subscription.
For most readers, the shortest path is to use a device already in the home with Xbox Cloud Gaming or Amazon Luna, then add a compatible controller. Choose GeForce NOW when an owned PC library is the deciding factor. Choose a Windows laptop, desktop or gaming handheld when local installations, broader PC compatibility or offline resilience matter more than minimizing initial hardware cost.
