For GPU-heavy professional work, a small-form-factor (SFF) workstation is usually the safer choice when you need a specific discrete GPU, substantial memory or storage, certified application support, or internal expansion. A mini PC can be better when footprint or deployment density matters more—but mini PCs range from integrated graphics to models with discrete GPUs. Choose by the exact configuration and workload, not the product label.
What separates the two options?
An SFF workstation is a compact desktop built around professional workloads, often with discrete workstation graphics, expansion options, and vendor-listed software certifications. A mini PC describes a smaller physical class, not a guaranteed level of GPU performance: some use processor-integrated graphics, while others include discrete GPUs.
That distinction matters more than the names. A GPU workload depends on the graphics processor and its memory, but also on application support, sustained cooling and power, system memory, storage, and the ability to expand or service the machine.

HP Z2 SFF: compact workstation with discrete graphics options
HP’s US Z2 SFF product page lists family options including NVIDIA RTX A4000 or AMD Radeon Pro W6600 graphics, up to 128 GB of ECC or non-ECC DDR5 memory, and up to 36 TB of storage. It also lists three storage bays, three M.2 slots, and power-supply options up to 550 W, as well as software certification and expandability. These are family maximums and options, not a promise that every regional or current configuration includes them. HP Z2 SFF specifications.

Minisforum G1 Pro: a mini PC with discrete graphics
Tom’s Guide’s review configuration of the Minisforum G1 Pro includes a Ryzen 9 8945HX, an NVIDIA RTX 5060 with 8 GB of graphics memory, 32 GB of DDR5, and a 1 TB SSD. The review reports upgrade options for RAM and storage and a swappable GPU, while also noting limited port selection and noise under heavy load. Those details describe the reviewed unit and review period; they do not describe every mini PC. Tom’s Guide Minisforum G1 Pro review.
Which is better for your workload?
CAD, visualization, rendering, and simulation
Begin with the application’s supported GPU list and VRAM requirements. An SFF workstation is the stronger default when the application benefits from a certified system or requires a particular professional GPU. HP lists workstation graphics options for the Z2 SFF family, and NVIDIA names CAD/AEC, simulation, and visualization among the RTX PRO 4000 SFF’s use cases. A compact enclosure does not by itself rule out professional graphics.

AI inference and data science
Check the required GPU memory, supported compute stack, and sustained power before comparing form factors. NVIDIA identifies AI inference and data science as uses for the RTX PRO 4000 SFF. The HP Z2 Mini G1a example instead uses processor-integrated graphics, with a configurable shared-memory pool described in the accompanying vendor document. These approaches are not interchangeable unless the workload and software support both.
Video editing and streaming
Check codec acceleration, encode and decode engine counts, application use of the GPU, and storage throughput. NVIDIA describes dedicated encode/decode engines and codec capabilities for the RTX PRO 4000 SFF; confirm that the target editing or streaming software uses the capabilities you need.

Mixed or lighter GPU workloads in tight spaces
A mini PC can be a good fit if its exact processor and GPU sustain the work and its noise and expansion limits are acceptable. The reviewed G1 Pro illustrates a mini PC with discrete graphics, while the Z2 Mini G1a illustrates a vendor-described workstation with integrated graphics. Neither example makes the category uniformly suitable or unsuitable for GPU-heavy work.
Decision checklist
| Decision factor | SFF workstation is more compelling when… | Mini PC is more compelling when… |
|---|---|---|
| GPU and VRAM | You require a specific professional GPU, driver, or graphics-memory capacity. HP lists discrete workstation graphics options for the Z2 SFF family. | The exact model’s integrated or discrete GPU meets the application’s requirements. The cited examples range from Ryzen AI Max+ PRO processor graphics to an RTX 5060-equipped G1 Pro. |
| Sustained power and cooling | The configured system has enough power and cooling for long, heavy GPU sessions. HP lists power-supply options up to 550 W for the Z2 SFF family. | The system sustains the needed performance and its noise profile is acceptable. Tom’s Guide notes noise under heavy load on its G1 Pro review unit. |
| Memory and storage | You need high capacities or internal expansion. HP lists up to 128 GB memory and up to 36 TB storage, plus three bays and three M.2 slots for the Z2 SFF family. | The offered capacity is sufficient or the model’s upgrade path meets your needs. The G1 Pro review describes RAM and storage upgrades; verify the specific configuration. |
| Application validation | The exact workstation and application benefit from the vendor’s software certification. | Your target application and operating system support the selected mini PC and GPU. |
| Deployment footprint | You want a compact desktop while retaining workstation-oriented expansion. | The smallest footprint or dense remote deployment is central. The Z2 Mini G1a document describes up to five units side by side in 4U of rack space. |
| Practical trade-offs | The required professional capabilities justify the system’s footprint and cost. | The workload fits and trade-offs in ports, noise, expansion, or configuration are acceptable. The G1 Pro review is one model-specific example, not a category-wide rule. |
How to make a reliable choice
- Start with the application. Identify supported GPUs, drivers, operating systems, required VRAM, and any vendor certification requirements.
- Set a sustained-workload target. Consider how long the GPU runs at high load, then check the exact system’s cooling, power supply, and noise behavior rather than relying on a peak GPU name.
- Verify the complete configuration. Check GPU model and memory, system RAM, storage, ports, physical card clearance, and upgrade options. Product-family maximums may not be offered together or in your region.
- Compare deployment and lifecycle needs. Account for desk or rack space, serviceability, internal expansion, and whether the machine will be upgraded or replaced as requirements change.
- Compare cost only after requirements are clear. Prices and retail availability vary; the cited sources do not establish stable prices or a universal cost advantage for either class.
What the available comparisons do—and do not—establish
The product specifications and review above do not provide a controlled, professional head-to-head benchmark between an SFF workstation and a mini PC. They cannot establish that one form factor is universally faster. Compare systems using the same workload, software version, settings, and sustained operating conditions, and treat vendor capability statements as specifications rather than independent benchmark results.
