1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want to play Halo: Combat Evolved on a Windows PC today, the best route depends on what you mean by “the original.” For the modern official remake, choose Halo: Campaign Evolved. For the older Anniversary edition, get Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), which is required to play Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary on Steam. The original-era Windows release is a separate version, and its current authorized storefront availability is not established.
Which version of Halo: Combat Evolved should you play on PC?
| What you want | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| A modern remake of the original campaign | Halo: Campaign Evolved | Officially available on Windows PC and Steam; it rebuilds the campaign rather than running the 2001 PC release. Halo Support describes it as a modern remake, and Halo’s out-now announcement confirms PC and Steam availability. |
| The Anniversary version, with a way to compare campaign visuals | Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary through MCC | The Steam content listing requires the MCC base game. The campaign includes a toggle between remastered and original graphics. See the Steam listing. |
| The original-era standalone Windows release | Only if you already own a legitimate copy | It is not the same product as Anniversary or Campaign Evolved. Its current authorized storefront sales status is not established here; avoid unofficial downloads. |
| Campaign co-op with friends | Check the specific release and mode | Campaign Evolved supports cross-play co-op for up to four players. MCC has separate online-play guidance for playing with a friend who also has MCC; do not assume the player count or local co-op options are identical across releases. Halo Support’s MCC guidance. |
Play the modern remake: Halo: Campaign Evolved
For most people asking how to play “the original Halo” on PC now, Halo: Campaign Evolved is the clearest official route if they want a modernized take on the first game’s campaign. Halo Support calls it a “modern remake” of Halo: Combat Evolved that preserves the original campaign experience. It is not the original 2001 executable or an unchanged port.
The released game adds high-definition graphics, refined gameplay, enhanced cinematics, rebuilt sound, three additional prequel missions, Campaign Remix and 42 Skulls, according to Halo’s official announcement. The same announcement says the game is available globally on Windows PC and Steam and supports cross-play co-op for up to four players. Feature details can change with updates.
Halo Support lists a download size of 70 GB or less in its July 28, 2026 release notes. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a full PC hardware requirement. Check the current store listing and release notes before installing.

Play Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary through MCC
Choose this path if you specifically want the Anniversary-era campaign and its graphics comparison. On Steam, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is listed as content that requires the MCC base game; it is not presented as a self-sufficient standalone game. The campaign lets you switch between remastered and original campaign graphics, as described on the Steam listing.
- Get MCC for PC. The Anniversary content depends on the MCC base game.
- Install or select the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary content. Use the current Steam listing and MCC installation options to confirm the content is included or available for your account.
- Launch the campaign from MCC. Use its in-game graphics toggle to compare remastered and original visuals.
For current PC operating-system and component requirements, consult Halo Support’s MCC PC specifications page; requirements can change, so the live listing is more useful than relying on a copied spec sheet.

What about the original standalone PC release?
The original Windows release is a distinct version, not another name for Anniversary and not the Campaign Evolved remake. The current authorized storefront status of that standalone port is not established, so this guide cannot recommend a present-day official store purchase for it. If you already own a legitimate copy, that is a different situation from seeking a new download. Do not rely on unofficial downloads or browser builds as a safe, supported, or authorized substitute.

No. The physical Collector’s Edition is for memorabilia, not a requirement for the PC game. Halo’s official announcement lists a physical manual modeled on the original, plus a SteelBook, statue, data-chip replica and prints. Its June 8, 2026 update reported the edition sold out; resale availability, if any, depends on region and seller.
