Choose the console and edition first, include only the games and accessories you actually want in your target, and adjust your timeline if the monthly amount does not fit your budget.
Set a realistic console target before you start saving
Console prices vary by platform, edition, storage, retailer, region, and date. Check the current price where you live before choosing a savings goal, and compare the full checkout cost rather than relying on an old sale price or a headline MSRP.

Compare what you will actually use
- Edition and storage: Decide whether the higher-priced model or extra storage matters for the games you play.
- Disc drive: If you buy or borrow physical games, check whether the model supports discs and account for any relevant edition differences.
- Games and accessories: Keep the console target separate from optional extras. Add a game, second controller, or headset only if you intend to buy it now.
- Total checkout cost: Account for applicable taxes, delivery, required subscriptions, and any bundle terms shown by the seller.
No platform or edition is the right choice for everyone. A lower sticker price is useful only if the console supports the games and features you want.
Calculate a monthly amount that fits your budget
Use this planning formula: (target cost − money already set aside) ÷ months until purchase = monthly savings goal. It is a way to plan, not a recommended universal amount. Your target, deadline, location, and existing savings determine the result.

- Write down the target: Use the current local price for the console and any planned essentials, including taxes or delivery if applicable.
- Subtract what you have: Count only money already set aside for this purchase.
- Choose a realistic deadline: Divide the remaining amount by the number of months before you hope to buy.
- Check it against your budget: List income, bills, and other expenses, then make sure the contribution leaves essentials covered.
- Track and review: Record actual spending and review the plan monthly. If the amount is no longer workable, change the timeline or target rather than skipping necessities.
Consumer.gov’s budgeting guidance recommends listing income and expenses, comparing them, tracking spending, and reviewing the budget monthly. It also treats savings as an expense you can plan for.

Consider used or refurbished consoles carefully
A used console can reduce the upfront target, but marketplace prices are time-sensitive and depend on model, condition, storage, included items, and seller terms. Swappa’s guide, updated September 24, 2026, reported these U.S. September 2026 examples:
| Console example | Used price reported by Swappa | New comparison in the guide |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Slim disc | About $503 | $649.99 |
| Xbox Series X | About $541 | $799.99 |
| Xbox Series S 512 GB | About $317 | $499.99 |
Swappa characterized the used examples as roughly 20–57% below new. These are marketplace-reported figures, not guaranteed offers or a forecast of what you will pay. Compare live listings for the same configuration and inspect what is included. Swappa’s console price guide.

- Read the return policy and any warranty or refurbishment terms before paying.
- Compare the final price with current new-console listings; a used listing is not automatically a better value.
Microsoft says Xbox Certified Refurbished consoles are available through Microsoft Store for up to US$100 off MSRP. Availability and terms can vary, so treat that as a possible discount rather than a guaranteed price. Microsoft also notes that payment options vary by region and eligibility. Xbox Wire’s announcement.
Be cautious with payment plans
A payment plan can make each payment appear smaller while increasing the total cost or adding risks. Before agreeing, read the written contract and check the interest, fees, missed- or late-payment consequences, and return terms. The Federal Trade Commission warns that buy now, pay later plans may involve fees and overdraft risks; longer rent-to-own arrangements may lower each payment while raising the total amount paid.

- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)

The FTC’s consumer guidance asks: “If you wait a few months, could you save up enough to pay the full cost instead of using a payment plan (and paying more over time)?” Compare the full amount due under the plan—including interest and fees—with the cost of waiting and saving.
