There is no reliable one-size-fits-all total: your budget depends on the console, local checkout costs, the games you plan to play, and whether you need paid online features or extra gear. Build your estimate from the items you will actually buy, and separate purchase-day spending from costs that recur over the next year.
Use a personal budget, not a universal total
Start with the console’s checkout price, then add only the costs that apply to your plans. A disc-free model may suit someone who buys digital games, while a disc-drive model may be preferable if you want physical games. Subscription services, a second controller, a headset, and storage upgrades are conditional purchases—not automatic requirements.

Use this worksheet with current prices from your local retailer and service provider:
- Purchase-day total: console price + local sales tax or VAT + delivery + any required setup item + games you are buying now + gear or storage you genuinely need now.
- Recurring costs over your chosen period: games you expect to buy during that period + any paid subscription you need + any increase in internet or electricity costs you can reasonably attribute to gaming.
- Optional protection: any coverage you are considering, after checking what the manufacturer warranty and local consumer rights already provide.
Choose a time horizon—such as one year—and use the same horizon for each console you compare. Do not count the same game or subscription both as an upfront and recurring expense.

What current console prices tell you—and what they do not
Prices vary by model, retailer, location, and purchase date. As a US manufacturer-recommended-price anchor, Sony set prices effective April 2, 2026, at $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are recommended prices, not guaranteed checkout totals; tax, delivery, retailer pricing, and local availability can change what you pay. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement explains the change.
Microsoft announced US Xbox console price increases effective August 1, 2026: $100 for 512 GB models and $150 for 1 TB models. That announcement gives the increase by storage tier, not a complete current US price list for each model, so check the exact console’s live local listing rather than treating the increase as its price. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement also discusses financing, trade-in initiatives, and certified refurbished consoles; availability, eligibility, and terms should be checked at purchase time.
Estimate the costs that depend on how you play
Games: price the titles you actually want
Write down the games you expect to buy during your chosen period and use their current prices in your region. Buying individual games and paying for a subscription library are different spending patterns; neither is automatically cheaper. Compare the titles you want, how often you play, and whether you want to keep access to games after a subscription ends. There is no defensible representative game-price figure here that can replace checking your own list.
Online services: pay only for features you need
Some online features or game libraries may require a paid platform plan, but do not add a subscription just because you are buying a console. Check the official regional plan page for the current price, renewal terms, and features relevant to the games you play. Plan prices and terms are not established here as a current cross-platform comparison.

Controllers, headsets, and included equipment
Budget for additional gear only when it serves a real need: a second controller for local multiplayer, for example, or a headset if you want voice chat. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page lists one controller, an ultra-high-speed HDMI cable, and a power cord in the package, so those are not extra purchases for that model. Check the Xbox Series X package and specifications for the stated inclusions.
Storage: upgrade only when your library calls for it
Extra storage is a conditional cost. It may be worthwhile if your installed library fills the console or you want to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling games, but needs differ by player. Check the exact console’s compatibility requirements and the current price of an approved expansion before adding it to the budget. Microsoft identifies compatible storage expansion as an option for Xbox Series X; that does not establish that every player needs a card.
Electricity and internet: estimate from your own use
These can recur, but a responsible estimate needs your play hours, console power draw under your use, local electricity rate, and any broadband cost change. There is no well-supported cross-platform annual energy figure or representative utility rate to apply universally. If gaming does not change your internet plan or bill, do not invent an added internet charge for the worksheet.
Compare consoles on the costs that matter to you
When comparing two specific models, fill in the same rows for each using local prices and your intended use. For Xbox, Microsoft describes Series X as having native 4K output and a UHD Blu-ray disc player, while Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p with the option to upscale to 4K; both have storage expansion options. These are distinctions between Xbox models, not a complete comparison across all console brands. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X page provides the cited model details.

Check tax, delivery, warranty, and payment terms
Tax and delivery depend on where you live and where you buy. Use the checkout total rather than assuming the advertised console price is the final amount. If considering installments, compare the full terms and total amount due; financing can change cash flow without reducing the underlying purchase price.
Warranty terms are specific to brand and jurisdiction. Nintendo of America states that Nintendo systems have a standard 12-month warranty and individually sold games and accessories have a three-month warranty. Those terms are for Nintendo of America and should not be generalized to other regions. See Nintendo of America’s warranty information.
Sony’s US PS5 warranty covers qualifying defects with repair or replacement at Sony’s option, requires proof of purchase for warranty service, and notes that consumer rights vary by state or province. Check the exact local terms and keep your receipt. Read Sony’s US PS5 warranty terms. Warranty periods and coverage for other brands or locations should be verified with the relevant manufacturer and seller rather than assumed from these examples.
