Best Ways to Try Games Before Buying Them on Steam (2026 Guide)

Start with a free demo whenever one is available. For unreleased games, a Steam Next Fest demo is the safest no-purchase option; a developer-run Steam Playtest is free but less predictable. For released games without a demo, Steam’s refund policy can function as a limited trial if you stay within its purchase-date and playtime rules.

Which Steam trial method should you use?

Steam does not offer one universal trial button for every game. Developers choose whether to publish a demo, open a Playtest, or make the game free to play, while Steam sets the standard refund framework for purchases. Your best option depends on whether the game is released, how much of the game you need to evaluate, and whether you are comfortable testing unfinished software.

Method Up-front cost Build maturity Access certainty Time limit Best for evaluating
Store-page demo None A selected, usually self-contained slice; it may not represent the whole game Immediate when the developer lists it None imposed by Steam’s refund policy Controls, performance, accessibility, genre fit and presentation
Steam Next Fest demo None Demo of an unreleased title Available while the developer’s demo is published and the event is running Event and demo availability are developer-controlled Whether an upcoming game deserves a place on your wishlist
Steam Playtest None Test build that can be unstable, incomplete or frequently changed Developer-controlled; access can be limited, revoked or ended No universal Steam trial period Basic compatibility and whether you want to help test the game
Standard refund Purchase required The released build you bought Usually available if the purchase meets Steam’s policy thresholds Generally within 14 days of purchase and under two hours played Real-world performance, controls and early-game fit
Free-to-play release None for the base game Released game, but the free portion varies by title Immediate from the store page No purchase-refund clock for the free base game Core loop and whether optional purchases matter to your experience
Early Access Purchase required Paid work in progress that can change substantially or never be finished Available to purchasers while the title remains in Early Access Same standard refund thresholds The current build only, not the developer’s eventual promises
Advance Access Pre-purchase required Pre-release access to a game approaching its official launch Starts when the publisher enables the pre-release access period Standard refund rules; before Advance Access begins, a refund can be requested at any time, and the normal 14-day period starts on release Whether the near-launch build is worth buying before release

1. Download the game’s free demo

A demo is the cleanest test because you do not pay, create a refund deadline or accept the risks of an online test environment. Open the game’s Steam store page and look for a Demo button or a separate demo entry. Download it, then test the aspects that could make you regret a purchase.

What a demo can and cannot tell you

Most demos are deliberately limited. They may cover a tutorial, an opening chapter, one map, a single character or a vertical slice built to showcase a particular feature. That makes a demo useful for judging the feel of play, but it does not guarantee that the full release has the same pacing, variety, length or end-game systems.

  • Controls: Check camera movement, aiming, remapping options, controller support and input latency.
  • Performance: Watch for stutter, shader compilation pauses, crashes, audio glitches and frame-rate problems on your hardware.
  • Accessibility: Look for subtitle controls, text size, color options, remapping, difficulty assists and other settings you need.
  • Genre fit: Play long enough to reach the game’s central loop rather than judging only its opening cutscene.
  • Presentation: Check readability, audio balance, save behavior and whether the interface is comfortable to use.

Do not treat a missing demo as evidence that the game is unsuitable. Demo publication is optional, and the developer may choose another access method or no trial at all.

2. Use Steam Next Fest for unreleased games

Steam Next Fest is designed around demos for unreleased titles. Steamworks’ eligibility guidance limits participation to unreleased games; using a Steam Playtest does not, by itself, make a title ineligible for a later Next Fest appearance. That makes a Next Fest demo the strongest no-purchase route for an upcoming game.

How to test a Next Fest title

  1. Open the Next Fest event page in Steam and select a game that interests you.
  2. On the game’s listing, install the available demo rather than purchasing the unreleased product.
  3. Use the demo to test your hardware, controls and accessibility settings.
  4. Read the store page’s release information separately from your demo impressions; a demo represents only the material the developer chose to show.
  5. Add the game to your wishlist if you want Steam to notify you about release information.

Next Fest is especially useful when you are comparing several upcoming games in the same genre. You can test each demo without accumulating purchases or starting refund clocks. The limitation is scope: a polished demo can demonstrate a game’s direction, but it cannot establish how the unreleased full product will perform at launch.

3. Request a Steam Playtest

A Steam Playtest gives players free access to a developer-enabled test build. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes it as a “free, low-risk solution to gathering playtest data without the stress of managing email lists or Steam keys or worrying about user reviews.” For a player, that means no purchase is required, but it also means the developer controls the test.

What to expect from a Playtest

  • Entry may be limited rather than automatic.
  • The developer can revoke access or end the test.
  • The build may be unstable, incomplete or missing content that will be present at launch.
  • Changes during the test can alter balance, performance or progression.
  • A Playtest is feedback access, not a promise that the tested build is representative of the final game.

Join a Playtest when you are comfortable reporting problems and judging an unfinished build on those terms. It is a poor substitute for a finished demo if your only goal is to decide whether to buy immediately.

How to evaluate a Playtest responsibly

  1. Read the store-page description so you know whether the test targets a particular mode, platform or feature.
  2. Confirm that your hardware and operating system meet the listed requirements.
  3. Test a short session first. Look for crashes, save issues, severe stutter or input problems before investing more time.
  4. Separate bugs from design preferences in your notes; a test may be collecting feedback on systems that are still being changed.
  5. Do not assume continued access. Save any personal settings or screenshots you need before the test closes.

4. Use Steam’s refund policy as a limited trial

For a released game with no demo, the standard refund route is the practical fallback. Steam’s current policy generally requires you to request the refund within 14 days of purchase and have less than two hours of playtime. These are policy thresholds, not a guaranteed right to finish two hours and receive approval in every circumstance.

Steam’s EU and UK guidance describes the voluntary policy as allowing customers to try digital games for up to two hours. Regional consumer law, unusual transactions and other exceptions can affect the outcome, so check the current Steam Support refund page for your account’s applicable terms before relying on a purchase as a trial.

A safe refund-test routine

  1. Before buying, note the purchase date and confirm that the game is the product you intend to test.
  2. Install it promptly so you have time to test within the policy window.
  3. Play a focused session that covers the opening, settings menu, graphics options and a representative section of the core loop.
  4. Monitor your Steam playtime. Menus and troubleshooting can consume the two-hour allowance.
  5. If the game is not suitable, submit the request through Steam Support before the 14-day purchase window closes.

A refund request is not a way to rotate through a complete game. It is a short evaluation period, and approval remains subject to Steam’s rules and any applicable regional requirements.

What to test before the clock runs out

  • Can you maintain acceptable performance after changing the game’s graphics settings?
  • Do your controller, keyboard, mouse, ultrawide display or other relevant devices work correctly?
  • Are subtitles, text size, remapping and other accessibility options sufficient?
  • Does the central activity remain enjoyable after the tutorial or first mission?
  • Do loading, saving, cloud synchronization and online connection behavior work as you expect?

Do not leave a large download, shader compilation or extended settings experiment until the end of the two-hour period. Those activities use playtime without telling you much about the game itself.

5. Try a free-to-play game

Steam’s free-to-play category lets you play a game’s base offering without buying it. This is a genuine no-cost test for the core loop, but “free to play” does not mean every feature is free. Check the individual store page for optional purchases and for a description of what the free version contains.

Questions to answer before committing time

  • Is the mode or campaign you care about included in the free version?
  • Are additional characters, maps, missions or equipment sold separately?
  • Do optional purchases affect progression or competitive balance?
  • Does the game require an online connection or account beyond Steam?
  • Will the free content let you evaluate the audience and play style you want?

Because you are not buying the base game, the standard purchase-refund clock is not the decision tool here. Instead, decide whether the free content itself answers your question and whether the optional-purchase structure is acceptable.

6. Treat Early Access as a paid work in progress

Early Access is not a free preview. You buy access to the current development build, and Steam says Early Access purchases qualify for the same refund rules as other games: generally a request within 14 days and less than two hours played. Steam’s Early Access guidance also warns that games can change and may never be finished.

The right question is therefore not “Will the finished game be good?” but “Would I be satisfied with the build available today if development stopped?” Steam’s own guidance frames Early Access as a place to consider what players should do before making a purchase, rather than a promise of a completed product.

When Early Access is a reasonable test

  • The current feature set already offers the activity you want to play.
  • You accept bugs, balance changes, missing content and possible redesigns.
  • You can evaluate the build within the normal refund limits.
  • You are willing to lose interest if development slows or the game remains unfinished.

When to wait instead

Wait for a demo, full release or independent confirmation when your decision depends on final story content, end-game systems, long-term multiplayer population or promised features. Those things may not exist yet in Early Access, and the developer’s plans are not a substitute for playable content.

7. Understand Advance Access before pre-ordering

Advance Access is pre-purchase access before a game’s official Steam release. Steam distinguishes it from Early Access: it is not a development model, but an opportunity to play before the full release. The purchase remains eligible for Steam’s standard refund policy.

Steam’s support guidance states that before Advance Access begins, you can request a refund at any time. Once the game officially releases, the normal 14-day purchase period begins. The usual playtime condition still matters under the standard policy, so keep your testing session controlled rather than assuming pre-release access is unlimited.

How to decide on Advance Access

  1. Check whether the listing clearly identifies the product as Advance Access rather than Early Access.
  2. Confirm the scheduled official release date and when your access begins.
  3. Test the pre-release build for hardware compatibility, controls and basic enjoyment.
  4. Remember that launch-day patches can change performance or content after your test.
  5. Use the refund rules that apply to the purchase instead of treating the pre-release period as a separate free trial.

A practical decision tree

  1. Is there a demo on the store page? Install it first. It requires no purchase and gives the clearest low-risk signal.
  2. Is the game unreleased and participating in Next Fest? Use its demo during the event.
  3. Is a Playtest available? Join only if you accept limited access and an unfinished build.
  4. Is the base game free to play? Test the free content and inspect the optional-purchase model.
  5. Is the game released with no free test? Consider a tightly managed purchase-and-refund test, subject to the 14-day and under-two-hour policy thresholds.
  6. Is it Early Access or Advance Access? Buy only when the current pre-release build itself is worth the risk, not solely because of future promises.

Common mistakes that make testing less useful

  • Confusing a demo with the full game: A selected slice cannot prove that later chapters, modes or systems will match it.
  • Assuming a Playtest is a preview build: It may be a diagnostic test with missing content and no guaranteed availability.
  • Spending the refund window on setup: Install and configure promptly so actual playtime remains available for evaluation.
  • Buying Early Access for a promised feature: Judge only what is playable now.
  • Ignoring regional terms: The standard Steam policy is widely stated as 14 days and under two hours, but regional rules and exceptions can apply.
  • Testing only the tutorial: Reach the central loop, because the opening may not represent the game’s sustained experience.
  • Overlooking accessibility: Check the settings you need before deciding that a game is suitable.

Bottom line

Use a free demo first, and use a Next Fest demo for an unreleased title. A Steam Playtest is the next safest option when you accept developer-controlled access and unfinished software. If no free test exists, the standard refund policy can provide a short, carefully managed evaluation of a released game. Free-to-play removes the purchase decision but requires checking what content and features are actually included. Early Access and Advance Access are purchases, so choose them only when the current build—not a promised future version—justifies the risk.
