Rose Belmont is the only character for whom the available official material establishes a playable weapon-and-build system. Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades are important story characters, but they are not identified as alternate buildable characters. For Rose, the strongest loadout depends on the encounter: Vampire Killer or Valmanway for mobile spacing, Alucard’s Sword and Shield for confined rooms, Excalibur for charged punish windows, Bernhard’s Wrath for sustained combos, and Chauve-Souris with offensive Arcana for ranged control.

Belmont’s Curse gives each weapon its own basic moveset, charge attack and grapple attack. Rose can equip up to three Relics, while Arcana earned from defeated bosses add another layer of offense and utility. The guide-reported inventory contains 28 weapons in seven families, with four attack tiers. The recommendations below use those systems rather than treating one weapon as universally best.

Who can use weapon builds?

Konami’s official character information identifies Rose Belmont as the new protagonist. Trevor Belmont travels with her, and Sypha Belnades is presented as Rose’s mother and a story character. The reviewed official material does not identify Trevor or Sypha as alternate playable characters with separate weapon inventories, Relic slots or Arcana loadouts.

Consequently, “every character” currently means every character confirmed to be playable: Rose. Trevor and Sypha belong in the story context, not in a fabricated build tier list. If a later update adds additional playable characters, their weapons and upgrade rules should be evaluated separately rather than assumed to share Rose’s system.

How Belmont’s Curse weapon upgrades work

Seven weapon families change three attacks

Konami’s weapon guide says a weapon changes three functional components: Rose’s basic moveset, charge attack and grapple attack. Switching weapons therefore changes movement and positioning as much as raw attack power. The same guide confirms seven weapon categories and up to three Relic slots, while warning that it does not publish a complete catalogue of every weapon or Relic effect.

Family Representative weapon What it does best Main trade-off
Whip Vampire Killer Long reach, high tip damage and spacing through Whip Drag Requires distance and careful positioning
One-handed sword Valmanway Balanced attacks, backdash bonus and delayed double attack Less specialized than heavy or defensive families
Sword and shield Alucard’s Sword and Shield Frontal blocking and a charged dash for safe re-engagement Defensive posture can slow clear speed
Gauntlets/cestus Bernhard’s Wrath Fast consecutive hits, ramping damage and high-combo healing Damage and sustain fall off when a string is interrupted
Greatsword Excalibur Large single hits, charged attacks and a projectile release Slow swings demand boss-pattern knowledge
Spear Chauve-Souris Aimed, throwable piercing attacks and safe poke damage Needs deliberate aim and spacing
Dual swords War and Famine Extended hit-confirm strings ending in ground attacks Long commitments are risky against mobile enemies

The family names above follow the seven-way framework described for the game. Individual examples come from the currently reported weapon guides, not a guarantee that every family’s final item list is complete.

Four reported attack tiers

Power Up Gaming’s 2026 guide reports 28 weapons spread across the seven families and gives these attack values:

Tier Guide-reported ATK How to interpret it
Ordinary 25 Entry-level version of a weapon family
Refined 50 Mid-progression upgrade
Masterpiece 75 High-tier version
Legendary 100 Top reported attack tier

These numbers are guide-reported 2026 values, not a permanent balance guarantee. A patch can change attack values, scaling or unlock conditions. Treat the tier as a power checkpoint, then keep the weapon whose attacks fit the encounter rather than automatically replacing a familiar moveset with a higher-numbered item.

Best Rose builds by play style

Mobile spacing: Vampire Killer or Valmanway

Choose Vampire Killer when reach is the priority. The cited guide describes it as having the highest tip damage among the listed weapons, and its Whip Drag spacing can burn enemies that explode on death without forcing Rose into the blast. Stand just outside a target’s retaliation range, tag the tip, then grapple only when the approach is safe.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse | Night One Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse | Night One Edition includes: Main Game, Alucard Style Costume, Digital Sound & Art Gallery, Trevor Style Costume, Sypha Style Costume, and Family's Grace (Relic).
  • Medieval Paris, Where the Tolling Bells Herald the End - 1499: Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows. Armed with the legendary holy whip, the Vampire Killer, Trevor Belmont’s successor ventures into the burning streets and the looming castle to hunt down the beasts. Can they save the city from the brink of destruction?
  • Satisfying Whip Action - The iconic whip of the series is now more important than ever! Crack your whip to move around freely like a trapeze artist! Master the whip mechanics and be creative to pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combats!
  • A Large Selection of Weapons and Abilities - The whip is not the only tool at your disposal. You will need to strategically plan your next move in combat and make full use of all the weapons and abilities to stand a chance!
  • Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!

Valmanway is the more forgiving alternative. Its balanced attacks, backdash bonus and delayed double attack reward players who are still learning enemy timing. Backdash after a confirmed hit, let the delayed strike resolve when the enemy remains in range, and use the grapple as a repositioning tool rather than a panic button.

For either weapon, pair Relics that reward damage after movement or favorable positioning. Vile Trinket is especially suited to deliberate rear attacks, while Necro Charm rewards a kill-to-kill route through ordinary enemies. Arcana that add ranged damage can cover targets that refuse to approach.

Tight-room defense: Alucard’s Sword and Shield

Alucard’s Sword and Shield is the safest recommendation for narrow rooms, overlapping hitboxes and enemies that attack from the front. Block the incoming frontal hit, then use the charged dash to cross space and re-enter on your terms. This weapon is less about maximizing a damage meter and more about converting an enemy’s approach into a controlled counterattack.

Use sustain-oriented Relics when a room denies clean dodges. Crypt Key restores full HP and Mana when Rose opens a chest, making it a recovery tool for exploration rather than a direct combat multiplier. Nightshade causes healing potions to restore 40% of maximum Mana, which is useful when defensive play depends on frequent Arcana casts. Do not spend the charged dash merely to close distance if a second enemy is still outside the camera view; block first, then move when the lane is clear.

Heavy punish: Excalibur

Excalibur is the heavy-punish choice. Its slow, high-damage swings and charged attacks are strongest against bosses with readable recovery animations. Charge before a predictable opening, release into the vulnerable window, and use its projectile release when walking into range would cost more health than the extra melee damage is worth.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania Edition Nintendo Switch
  • 17 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover
  • 5 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers
  • 150 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, magic spells, shields, pets, frying pans etc; You name it, we got it
  • Unlock the four original Dead Cells DLCs, giving you late-game content plus an entire new pathway to follow, with an alternative ending and tons of new enemies, weapons & outfits
  • Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord

Damage-on-opening Relics magnify this plan. Sinister Rune grants 40% damage against full-health enemies, so it is strongest on the first decisive hit rather than after a prolonged exchange. Obsidian Fang grants 45% damage for three seconds after Rose breaks an enemy guard; save Excalibur’s charged strike for that short window. These are 2026 guide values and may be adjusted by balance updates.

Combo sustain: Bernhard’s Wrath

Bernhard’s Wrath suits players who can keep uninterrupted strings. The gauntlets/cestus build gains fast consecutive hits, ramping damage and healing at high combo levels. Start on a single safe target, confirm that the first hits connect, and avoid switching targets mid-string unless the new target is already inside the attack path.

Combo scaling is lost when Rose is forced to disengage, so use defensive movement between strings rather than during their most valuable section. Necro Charm’s 25% damage increase for three seconds after a kill helps carry momentum into the next target. If a spell can be cast without breaking the sequence, Twilight Gem adds 30% damage for three seconds after a spell; otherwise, reserve Arcana for moments when the combo would end without it.

Ranged control: Chauve-Souris

Chauve-Souris is the clearest ranged-control answer. Hold to aim and throw the spear for piercing poke damage, then use projectile, fire, lightning or petrification Arcana to control lanes. Meristation specifically reports that a ranged weapon plus suitable magic makes Medusa easier, so this is the documented matchup recommendation rather than a generic ranged preference.

Keep enough room to aim without standing directly beneath a target. Open with a piercing throw, apply the Arcana effect that best matches the enemy’s movement, and switch builds when the room changes. Belmont’s Curse supports one-button build switching, so a ranged preset for Medusa does not require abandoning a melee preset for the next encounter.

Extended hit confirms: War and Famine

War and Famine rewards players who are comfortable committing to long strings. Its dual-sword sequence extends after a confirmed hit and finishes with ground-attack sections. Start only when the first strike is guaranteed, watch for an interruption cue, and end the string early if a second enemy enters attack range. This family can clear groups quickly, but its value comes from hit confirmation rather than blind mashing.

Relics: choose three effects that support the weapon

Rose can equip up to three Relics. The following effects are examples listed by Power Up Gaming in 2026; they should be read as dated guide values, not immutable figures.

Relic Reported effect Best use
Witch’s Brew +20% damage per empty healing potion High-risk runs where unused healing charges are intentionally converted into offense
Twilight Gem +30% damage for three seconds after a spell Arcana-led burst and Bernhard’s Wrath combo transitions
Sinister Rune +40% damage against full-health enemies Excalibur openers and first-hit burst
Vile Trinket +25% damage from behind Backdash-and-reposition play with Vampire Killer or Valmanway
Obsidian Fang +45% damage for three seconds after breaking an enemy guard Shield-break punish windows, especially with Excalibur
Raven’s Feather +25% aerial damage Jumping attacks and aerial routes against grounded targets
Necro Charm +25% damage for three seconds after a kill Room clearing and maintaining momentum between targets
Crypt Key Opening a chest restores full HP and Mana Exploration routes with predictable chest checkpoints
Gloomstone Provides proximity hints for secrets Exploration and hidden-room hunting rather than boss damage
Lich’s Mark Reduces spell cost during quick sequences Frequent Arcana use when spells are cast in rapid succession
Nightshade Healing potions restore 40% of maximum Mana Defensive or spell-heavy builds that need repeated resource recovery

Build the three-slot set around one trigger family. For example, Sinister Rune plus Obsidian Fang creates an opening-and-guard-break burst plan, while Twilight Gem plus Lich’s Mark supports repeated spell sequences. Mixing unrelated triggers is not automatically wrong, but it makes the loadout harder to activate consistently.

Arcana and one-button build switching

Arcana are created from defeated bosses’ tarot cards. Meristation reports more than 15 spells and says Arcana can be upgraded through combat challenges. Their value is not limited to raw damage: projectile, fire, lightning and petrification effects can alter how Rose controls a room.

Use the weapon’s natural range as the first layer and Arcana as the answer to what that range cannot solve:

  • Excalibur: use a spell to force movement, then charge while the boss is committed to recovery.
  • Chauve-Souris: combine piercing throws with elemental or petrification effects to keep dangerous targets at distance.
  • Bernhard’s Wrath: use low-cost or quick-sequence Arcana only when they preserve the combo plan.

Because the game supports one-button build switching, save presets by encounter role instead of by favorite weapon alone: a spacing preset, a defensive preset and a ranged-control preset cover more situations than three nearly identical damage setups.

How to upgrade weapons and plan progression

  1. Start with the Longsword family. ComicBook.com describes Longswords as the balanced starting family, with a distinctive follow-up after a dash or slide. Use the starting Longsword to learn timing before committing to slower or more specialized weapons.
  2. Test all three attacks at a safe checkpoint. For each new weapon, perform its basic string, charge attack and grapple attack. A higher ATK tier does not compensate for a charge or grapple that you cannot land reliably.
  3. Move up the reported tiers as they become available. The guide’s progression is Ordinary 25 ATK, Refined 50, Masterpiece 75 and Legendary 100. Record the tier and the weapon’s behavior together, since balance changes can alter the numbers.
  4. Assign Relics to a trigger you can activate. Pick three effects that match your actual habits: guard breaks, rear attacks, spell casts, kills, aerial hits or potion management.
  5. Earn and improve Arcana through combat challenges. Boss tarot cards create Arcana, and combat challenges provide their reported upgrade path. Improve the spells that answer the encounters giving you trouble instead of spreading upgrades evenly.
  6. Save a second preset before a boss. Keep the familiar melee build available, then create a ranged or defensive alternative. One-button switching is most useful when the backup is prepared before the encounter begins.

Reported weapon locations and naming cautions

Destructoid’s location guide, explicitly marked “Work in progress,” currently reports these examples under its categories: default Longsword, Bastard Sword, Joyeuse and Valmanway among one-handed swords; Rusted Harpe and Aegis; and Fleuret and Tower Shield among sword-and-shield examples. These are currently reported examples, not a completed item checklist.

For that reason, use a weapon’s family and function as your search criteria when exploring. If a room does not contain the exact named weapon you expected, check whether the guide has been updated and whether the item belongs to a different family or tier. Do not infer that an unlisted weapon does not exist merely because the work-in-progress list omits it.

Fast matchup decisions

Situation Recommended starting loadout Adjustment if it fails
Long lanes or enemies that punish close contact Vampire Killer, Vile Trinket, ranged Arcana Use Valmanway if tip-spacing timing is inconsistent
Small room with frontal pressure Alucard’s Sword and Shield, Nightshade or Crypt Key Block less, reposition with the charged dash, and avoid being surrounded
Boss with obvious recovery windows Excalibur, Sinister Rune, Obsidian Fang Drop one burst Relic for sustain if missed charges cost too much health
Groups of ordinary enemies Bernhard’s Wrath, Necro Charm, Twilight Gem Break strings early when a second attacker enters the lane
Medusa or another encounter favoring distance Chauve-Souris with projectile, fire, lightning or petrification Arcana Switch to a defensive preset if the arena removes aiming space

Common build mistakes and fixes

Chasing ATK while ignoring attack behavior

A Legendary weapon’s reported 100 ATK is attractive, but a slower charge or awkward grapple can reduce real damage if it causes missed openings. Practice the full three-part moveset before replacing a lower-tier weapon that you can use consistently.

Equipping three damage Relics with no trigger plan

Damage multipliers only matter when their conditions occur. If a build depends on rear attacks, guard breaks and full-health targets simultaneously, many fights will activate only one effect. Choose a common trigger and let the other slots support it.

Using a melee preset against a spacing check

Medusa is the documented example where ranged weaponry and suitable magic simplify the encounter. Switch to Chauve-Souris and Arcana rather than repeatedly forcing a close-range string into a fight designed around distance.

Assuming Trevor or Sypha have hidden loadouts

The available official material does not establish alternate playable weapon systems for either character. Treat their appearances as narrative roles unless a later official update confirms otherwise.

Recommended starting path

Begin with the Longsword family to learn dash and slide follow-ups. Move to Valmanway when you want a balanced step up, then keep Alucard’s Sword and Shield ready for cramped rooms. Add Excalibur after you can read boss recovery windows, Bernhard’s Wrath when you can maintain uninterrupted strings, and Chauve-Souris when a fight rewards range. Upgrade Arcana that solve a specific encounter, and reserve the three Relic slots for effects whose conditions you can activate repeatedly.
